Although McDonald's Chicken McNuggets are typically offered as an example of a popular MSP (Mechanically Separated Poultry)-based food, since 2003 that product has been made with all white meat rather than MSP.

^ The pertinent excerpt. Thanks, pastygangster, for posting that. It really bugs me when people copy-pasta misleading or outright false information.

[–]srd178 53 points54 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Had to log in here...I work in the industry at Michael Foods. This actually is white meat, not to be confused with MSP. Under current food labeling regulations, white meat products can be labeled as such as long as they use portions of the chicken that do not contain large amounts of hemoglobin, most notably the breast. That does not mean that a company does not grind the mixture up, introduce additives, and form it. The biggest difference I notice in the plant between MSP and white meat is white meat raw, seen here is a nice bright pink, while MSP is browner, much like the old mcnuggets actually used to be. Chemicals such as sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate preserve the meat, add moisture and extend the mixture. (Guess what the second most prevalent ingredient behind chicken is in McNuggets, water!)

[–]xdewx 4 points5 points ago

srd178, can you please tell me where the pink color comes from? Thanks.

[–]srd178 13 points14 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is one of the sodium chemicals like sodium nitrite. It is actually dyed pink on purpose so that it is not confused with regular salt or sugar to prevent toxicity. (without coloring it looks just like it) Imagine a worker dumping these chemicals in the volume that they normally add as salt. A lot of dead people and a lot of lawsuits.

edit: found a source

just another reason to not eat McDonalds besides the fact that it dosen't taste good. Sodium nitrate causes cancer. http://www.organicconsumers.org/foodsafety/processedmeat050305.cfm

[–]BigRock83 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sadly Sodium nitrate is found in a wide array of products most notably cured meats and processed foods. This being said avoiding McDonalds is not enough. Legislation would have to be passed banning the more toxic food additives which in turn would force companies to produce and people to eat more fresh foods.

[–]Anathema47 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like the best idea ever.

[–]Skyrmir 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which means there's a glaring problem with it. While more fresh food is an awesome goal, it's also more expensive due to consumption rates. Fresh food rots faster than preserved food, that's why they preserve it. Imagine what happens to food prices when we have to start destroying a third of what we produce because it rotted.

We should probably be looking for some safer preservatives, rather than just the most profitable.

[–]jdoe3351 2 points3 points ago

Not sure if I'd worry so much about the Sodium Nitrite. Most fruits an vegetables contain it, and ascorbic acid will inhibit the carcinogenic effects. On top of that, all meat in the U.S. is required to have some ascorbic acid added... So the risk of getting cancer from the added Sodium Nitrite seems pretty minimal.

Aside from that, I'd worry more about the added fats and salt in their food, and it should still be avoided. Not to mention that it tastes like crap and they treat their employees like crap

[–]jdoe3351 1 point2 points ago

I never said it kept you from getting sick. Sodium Nitrite can be dangerous in higher doses, but the amount found in processed meat is harmless

[–]wildo421 0 points1 point ago

I does keep you from getting sick tho, it preserves food and slows the development of bacteria.

I was more so taking a shot at the recent trend of people being against stuff that is good for them.

How is that sad? They saw how they were made, they accepted that it's all the offcuts and the bits people think are "gross" and they still want to eat it because it's tasty. They know it's bad for them, they said it is. Do you only eat food thats good for you? No of course you fucking don't. Jamie Oliver is a prick, there's nothing wrong with eating chicken nuggets as long as you know that they are bad for you, and you don't eat them every day.

[–]moghua 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The lunch menu at my kids school (which they would have to eat if we didn't make lunches for them) is chicken nuggets, hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers and something called a "sausage twist". Jamie can certainly be a prick, but he has a valid point that kids eat this kind of shit a lot and too often it is because adults offer it to them.

[–]Fa1nT 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Adults offer it to them because it is cheap and low effort.

Nothing is stopping a parent from packing their kids lunches.

[–]orkid68 0 points1 point ago

Unfortunately, those kids do eat that kind of shit every day, and that’s exactly what Jamie Oliver is trying to work against. And you call him a prick for that?

[–]dumbledorkus -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes I do, because he went about it in all the wrong ways.

He acts like fast food is some kind of devil, saying that chicken nuggets and such are a huge problem, and that they're killing our children. He acts like fast food companies are brainwashing kids into only liking fast food. They're not. Poor parenting is the problem and the parents are teaching their kids to like fast food. Parents here expect to pay £1.20 a day and get a full, hot, nutritional meal from the school canteen. It's just not plausible, which is why he failed so hard. He acts all high and mighty but in the process of this retarded quasi-political campaign of his he visibly gained a lot of weight. Am I supposed to think that's from all the healthy food he's pedalling?

Plus his voice is fucking annoying and everytime he says "Pucka!" I want to punch him right in his fat little face.

[–]Two_Whales 25 points26 points ago

Not sure if you guys ever saw 'ordinary' ground chicken before, but it's just as pink as what's in this picture. It's not exactly appealing to look at, but just because it's pink doesn't mean that it's processed.

I have never understood the revulsion people have for this. Would it be better if the remainder of the chicken went to waste? They take parts of meat that I would baulk at eating and turn them into something I scoff down. Kudos to them. It keeps food costs down, increases available nutrition, reduces the number of birds killed and makes some damn tasty products.

Is it really grosser than pate or beef mince? In class, I've had kids respond in revulsion when we have dissected simple raw chicken from the supermarket and I think this similar revulsion is a symptom of the detachment of understanding and experience between the food we eat and the processes that provided it.

[–]IfMamaCatAintHappy 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a vegetarian who has butchered a goat with stone tools (Africa, research, long story) I agree about the massive separation most meat eaters have from the reality of their food. I mean, watching something die and removing its skin is pretty WTF no matter what happens to the less tasty bits. Just sayin'.

[–]SquidAngel 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very much respect to you, especially for having had the guts to go through with something a lot of "modern" people would baulk at. If that's what made you a vegetarian, I very much applaud your decision.

I'm a meat eater myself, and I have few illusions about where my food comes from. I may not know everything that goes into the food industry, but seeing and learning about this process actually makes me feel better about my choice to remain a meat eater, as I know that more of the meat and organs will be used as food, rather than thrown away.

The sad thing is that a lot of "modern" people will baulk at eating food that doesn't "look" right, whereas many countries with differing food cultures will happily utilize parts of the animal and even treat some of the parts "we" throw away as delicacies.

This practice isn't even limited to meat. People often throw away parts of vegetables that are perfectly edible, because they'll only eat the tasty parts, or because they think it's gross.

[–]panlane 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Respect to you. If you are going to eat meat, you have to accept the moral consequences that an animal was killed to provide it and the easiest/hardest way to test whether you can really accept that is to do it yourself at least once.

[–]SuperCow1127 8 points9 points ago

Honestly, that doesn't gross me out. What's gross to me is all the chemical disinfectant, artificial flavoring, and other necessities of large scale processing that happen afterwards.

If someone made a paste out of all the garbage parts of a chicken, I would still fry it and eat it. In fact, I may even head over to a Chinese market, get some chicken pieces, and try it tonight.

[–]lambcaseded 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, if this was just a meat paste that was made by grinding up a bunch of chicken meat, then I'd eat it no problem. But the fact that they wash this shit in ammonia and add all sorts of other crap to it makes it completely inedible for me.

[–]FyreFlimflam -1 points0 points ago

Do we not spice our food anyways? I don't understand why people have so much of a problem with "unnatural" flavoring. Could it taste better if they used only prime cuts and real herbs? Of course! but that's not what you're paying $2 for.

If you're not going to eat it, do it because you genuinely dislike the flavor or the nutrient value, but not because, "its got chemicals in it". Everything has chemicals in it. You are made of chemicals. Everything you have ever eaten was made of chemicals.

Tonight I cooked duck l'orange with sauteed fresh spinach and local honey boiled raisins for dinner, but that doesn't mean that chicken nuggets don't taste delicious because they added a gallon of "chicken flavor #5" to the batch. And I would be unhappy if any of those things that I ate weren't chemically protected, because I didn't harvest the vegetables or the fruits, nor did I kill and debone the duck. There isn't a farm in the grocery store, and part of the reason our ecosystem works is that there are some buggers that are exceedingly efficient at breaking down dead tissue.

I'll choose the chemically dosed and regulated meat from McDonalds over the grab bag of uncertainty that is a Chinese market any day.

[–]SuperCow1127 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't mean to imply that I'm anti-chemical. There's a big difference between "spice" and "soaked in ammonia, then flavored to hide the taste of ammonia".

Also, the jab against Chinese markets is totally uncalled for. Most of the stuff I buy there is actually alive shortly before I point at it.

Great way to argue against corporate marketing techniques to manipulate our diets. Show a picture of something that looks gross without any information about it.

Same with this video. What is bad about the middle of the chicken? What is bad about the stabilizer and flavoring?

I'm not saying that these are good things, but it is a fallacy to say kids or brainwashed because they will eat something that looks gross if it is in a shape that looks good.

Also, to many kids vegetables look gross, so what is the real point of this rhetoric? Kids should make dietary decisions based on how food looks? Kids shouldn't eat foods that seem gross?

Side note: To me the best parts of the chicken are the undesirable parts like gizzard, hearts, liver, tendon. (Living in Japan, I have a lot of access to good yakitori) Again a lot of people dismiss them for the gross factor; I am happy to finish these for them.

Mechanically reclaimed meat is used in many cheap and high demand products. Hot dogs are usually made out of it too. It's basically parts of the chicken that can only be removed with a massive compressor which squashes everything down into what you see in the image. So all the leftovers on the bone, and all the crap we wouldn't otherwise eat, such as organs are thrown in, squashed and made into various "meat" products.

I am sure you can buy chicken nuggets with actual good quality chicken, but in fast food and cheap frozen products it is more than likely MRM.

I understand a lot of people in America don't like Jamie Oliver but in fairness to him, he does educate what's in your food well. In this video he gives a scaled down demonstration about how chicken nuggets are made.

[–]SuperLobster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, I don't understand why people in America don't like Jamie Oliver. How can you not? He is a simple chef who can cook with simple and organic ingredients. Direct and no bullshit approach to healthy cooking.

[–]Dantayl 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it was after his campaign to make them eat healthier. I think it was similar to the one he did here in the UK to try and make school dinners healthier and nicer. I think he came across too preachy and people didn't like it.

[–]boot20 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked it, but it was preachy and a little unrealistic. However, I do like what they are doing in some school districts in California. A school, not to far from my old apartment, has a garden that they use for the school lunches. Not only does it save money for the school, but the kids eat healthier.

What Jamie should have done is focus more on that aspect and less on the "this is what you should eat" part of it.

[–]orkid68 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People in this country are extremely apologetic for mechanical processes. They’ll pay lip service to simple organic cooking — “Sure, it looks better and tastes better, but...” the mechanical way always has to be better. “This way tastes just as good when you add flavor chemicals, and after all everything is made of chemicals. You can’t argue with science!” Any aesthetic preference for handmade food is dismissed as irrational, because the industrial way is cheaper. And if you stick to your irrational preference, that means you’re a “sensationalist.” I think it’s because of an addiction to the idea of progress — the newest thing (implicitly, America) must be the best, no matter what. So everything old (Europe) must be crap. After a lifetime living in Texas, this is the only sense I can make of it.

[–]SuperLobster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always been progressively trendy in that, I'll accept an idea but you must always question it. Same thing with businesses going "green", its just a greenwashing in the end and the system of business is very unsustainable anyway. I'm glad you mentioned our addiction to the idea of progress and how we blindly accept science in that "its obviously better" context. Very vague reply, but I really enjoyed your post.

[–]orkid68 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks! There are many people in America who don’t think this way, but the techie community (like here on Reddit) usually does. People forget that science once regarded asbestos as a miracle, until better science came along!

[–]Skyrmir 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it's meat paste, that's pretty much what it should look like. What confuses me is why are they extruding it into a cardboard box? And why is there a bigger box of it in the background? That's a perfectly good stream of meat, why the cardboard box and not a more suitable conveyance to the next step in processing?

Is it weirdthati wanan try that cooked? And not in nugget form

[–]aposter -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, check out a package of hotdogs. If they have "mechanically separated poultry" or "mechanically separated chicken" in their ingredients, then cook them up and have a blast since that is what the stuff in the picture is. That stuff isn't just in nuggets, it is in a LOT of food. Lots of yummy, meaty, food.

[–]zatoichi68 0 points1 point ago

The link debunks an e-mail forward that sometimes accompanies the pic. As far as your link is concerned, the pic is real.

[–]boot20 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, no it is not. The picture close, but not quite. If you watch the second video, you'll see how this is really made and what it really looks like.

[–]orkid68 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. The second video is to demonstrate a deboner, not nuggets. Do you have any evidence about this pic?

[–]boot20 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The snopes article I posted.

Either way, it is better to do this, than waste food.

[–]orkid68 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like I said, the snopes article references a false caption, without doubting the picture itself. You've given no evidence to deny that this picture depicts a nugget-making machine.

[–]boot20 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is clearly processed meat, but it might or might not be nuggets. The picture fails to mention this is after various colored chemicals have been added and omits the fact that it is not pink from the processing, but from colored chemicals.

regardless, this is a frequent repost and had no context.

[–]Helplessromantic 0 points1 point ago

Op what did you hope to accomplish by posting this? First that's not chicken nuggets before they are pressed and cooked, secondly even if it was, it's not like i'd say "oh well never gonna eat chicken nuggets again"

I hate to sound like a dick but i can't help but wonder every time i see someone post it, this shit is fast food, not high end cuisine.

Hell that's not even a good argument because there is some nasty shit in high end cuisine.

I dont like you op

My Sociology teacher showed us this. She also said since this processed meat has so much bacteria in it, they have to wash it with ammonia. Not sure how true that is, but yeah. -_-
