[–]Vilvos 101 points102 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kirk is on another level.

Imagine a thousand outhouses, and the outhouses drain into a funnel that collects the shit into a drain that leads to an ocean of shit where a thousand other similar drains empty. There are thermal vents at the bottom of this shit ocean heating the seas of shit. Now, imagine a lid covers this ocean, allowing the shit waters to stew for a million years. After that time has elapsed, a sponge is dropped into the ocean; the sponge is absorbs everything. Next, that sponge is miniaturized by a magician and sent to a lab where they've been breeding a rat with stretchy, impenetrable skin. The miniaturized sponge is fed to the rat, who happily gobbles it up. As the sponge is passing through the rat's intestines, the sponge's miniaturization wears off, and the sponge instantly expands to its original gigantic size inside the rat, but the rat's special skin doesn't rupture, resulting in a shit-filled rat the size of a Macy's Day Parade blimp. The rat is squeezed into a lecture hall at the local community college. When the professor mentions evolution, a quantum-sharpened needle punctures the rat's skin, and the rat explodes. That what Kirk Cameron is like.

I know it's blasphemy and I think chuck is probably a decent guy, but I don't agree with almost any of chuck's political or religious views and wondered why he became such a meme... in contrast my family has always called Clint Eastwood "Saint Clint".

[–]Echono 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The meme was originally meant to be ironic, since Chuck was always a low-grade tv star. It just took on a life of its own after a while.

http://www.laweekly.com/2009-12-10/film-tv/eastwood-on-the-pitch/4/

His comments about his film Hereafter:

“Also, there’s a certain charlatan aspect to the hereafter, to those who prey on people’s beliefs that there’s some afterlife, and mankind doesn’t seem to be willing to accept that this is your life and you should do the best you can with it and enjoy it while you’re here, and that’ll be enough. There has to be immortality or eternal life and embracing some religious thing. I don’t have the answer. Maybe there is a hereafter, but I don’t know, so I approach it by not knowing. I just tell the story.”

[–]WallyWalrus 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Maybe I completely misunderstood this movie. I thought it pretty clearly indicated that there was an afterlife, or at least supernatural phenomena. It wasn't very good either.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's saying his role in the film doesn't necessarily coincide with what he thinks. He's just telling a story in the film, whereas in real life he doesn't pretend to know if there's an afterlife or not.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't see the movie. I also heard it was boring.

ummmm, that's a role he played.

[–]baileykm 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but as a star he placed himself in the role of celebrity.

Celebrity is not always your role, but sometimes it can be. For instance look at Sylvester Stalone, he is rocky. He will never not be Rocky so that is his role.

Clint was Harry but he was never trapped in one role and expanded beyond it. Still he agreed to play a role which not many people look kindly on in society.

[–]mexicodoug 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I didn't like him in the 1970s because I felt he only portrayed characters who considered violence to be the only solution to every problem.

It took a couple of decades, but I eventually recognized that once he had achieved the name and money he was acting in and directing films that had a much greater range and more positive messages.

Stallone and Schwarzenegger never got beyond that attitude of "every problem is a nail and I'm a motherfucking HAMMER!!!"

[–]Libertarian_Atheist 2 points3 points ago

Nah, he's not a vegetarian or vegan. He's suffered the same fate as Mark Twain quotes. The internet can infinitely perpetuate false data until it becomes an assumed truth.

He makes it clear in this times article.

Still, upvote for glorious uber pimp

[–]EONS 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

a-ha! I read that article, but I guess the info had sloshed around with other tidbits and gotten misconstrued, leaving me to think he was a vegetarian. SORRY!

He disapprove of hunting though, I'm positive this time!

[–]irisoceans 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah it's hard to tell what's accurate when inaccuracies get repeated so often.

I only know he's not a vegan because I was vegan for about 3 years and he was my go to reference for how a vegan could be badass.

At the time I was pretty crushed to hear that it was false, but then realized that people like Ian Mackaye had done far more badass things in the real world.

Sidenote: I definitely support hunting of certain game in areas like the part of Virginia that I live in. I see deer daily, and if it weren't for hunting, all the deer would eventually starve due to extreme food competition(a lot are starving already.) And most hunters that I know donate the deer meat to the local food bank. I do NOT however support Teddy Roosevelt style, "this animal is exotic, let's kill it and mount it's head."

[–]mexicodoug 10 points11 points ago

Is that a quote of Eastwood's, or of one of the characters he played? Movies would be pretty boring if all the actors refused to portray any bad guys.

[–]Kayge 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's from Gran Torino. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

The character is complex, not necessarily good or bad.

[–]doubledmateo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Potential spoilers to those who have not seen it:

I'd say he was overall a really good character. His racist crap was pretty much a product of his times and where he came from. (I understand that this does not justify such behavior completely but it should be taken into account. Some people have just not been exposed to alternate viewpoints and it's more difficult for them to accept then it might be for you or me) The actual actions that he takes were pretty caring. He put his neck out to protect innocent people even though he didn't like the color of their skin at first.

I definitely agree that his character is complex. No white Knight, but a human being.

[–]mexicodoug 2 points3 points ago

Haven't seen that one. Will rent and watch. :)

[–]Libertarian_Atheist 12 points13 points ago

Actually, in that movie he played a racist who was a good guy. Why do you assume that all racists must be bad guys? Lincoln was a racist, Jefferson was a racist, and probably the majority of our ancestors were racists.

I don't think anyone is a bad guy unless he harms another human being.

You might not like someone or find them distasteful but that does not make them a bad person. In fact, I find someone who thinks another person is bad for their views very distasteful.

[–]Aavagadrro 22 points23 points ago

In a way it does, since religion is one of the reasons why people are prejudiced towards gays. Sure an atheist can be prejudiced and hate rug munchers or buggering pole smokers, but it isnt as prevalent as it is with those who have religion. Its the rare religious type who is ok with gays doing whomever and whatever they like in private.

Shit, quite a few religious people dont like that I like doggy style and reverse cowgirl, and its none of their fucking business what position I use to stick my man meat into the womans glory hole, or her ass, or her mouth, or just fucking her under arms and behind her knees while wearing a Tinky Winky suit with her suspended above the bed with silk rope.

So yeah, it does have something to do with atheism, just not all of them.

A common stance of religious organizations is to be anti-gay-marriage. /r/atheism has come to a consensus (decided upon by upvotes) that arguments that are anti-anti-gay marriage are appropriate to put here since they're the opposite of the religious side of the debate.

I've also read an argument that marriage exists for the sake of having and raising children, so gay couples, who can't have children with each other, shouldn't be allowed to get married, but there's huge holes in that one, too.

In Catholic Church's definition, exactly. That's why when one side turns out to be infertile, the marriage is ruled invalid.

Send Eastwood to Washington for a day. Just one day and spend it in a room with Boehner and McConnell and Cantor.

I don't understand why so many people care if a man marries another man. It doesn't affect you in anyway, so why cry about it? Just a waste of time and energy.

Government should only recognize individuals, if you want to have financial contracts where you get half of someones stuff if they leave the toilet seat up or f someone else go ahead.

If you want to be recognized by zues and athena have that go thru your local mono/polytheist organization.

Immigration is the only issue I don't currently see an answer for, outside of have your significant other go to college and learn english.

If you want to preserve the "sanctity" of marriage, then make divorce illegal. At 50% divorce rate, the sanctity of marraige has probably seen better days.

Wait, what does marriage have to do with atheism?

[–]dispellado 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because the vast majority of opposition to marriage availability to adults comes from religious sources. Take what happened with Prop. 8 in California, for instance.

Though I agree with you that it's a leap... somewhat. I myself checked on my frontpage, thinking this was from the LGBT subreddit (straight dude myself, but I subscribe). There's no denying that the primary reason (and whatever comes next wouldn't even be a close second) that gays are persecuted in America is because of religious dogma.

As a result, persecution of homosexuals is one of the real, tangible consequences of theistic belief. And while no atheist has to be for or against any other issue in order to be an atheist, it is definitely the case that the two have a relationship in the United States and that the link can be drawn without jumping through many hoops.

It was never about marriage; Christians want to limit sex to one man and one woman.

Leviticus 20:13 NIV - "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

Not really. Conservative Christians actually just want the world to feel more like it did when they were kids. They yearn for the utopia that they remember (but never really was) of 1950's America. Conservative thinkers generally look with suspicion on any major societal change that has happened since their childhood that does not directly benefit them. Open gayness does not benefit them, so the GOP leadership has found it is an easy wedge they can use to keep those folks voting GOP. So they ratchet up the rhetoric, which spills back into the churches, the tail wags the dog and these views become self-reinforcing.
