It's not your brain being tricked. It's the photoreceptive cells in your eyes that experience strain from looking at the same colour for too long. Once the offending colour is removed, the cells are less sensitive to that colour and will mistakenly interpret white as the inverse of the original colour that strained them.

Not true, when you think about it. As long s the photoreceptive cells are alive and well, they are going to react to light the same way they always do. Weather or not there is a brain at the far end means nothing to how the cells respond.

Its something called afterimage, where it leaves a imprint of sorts on your vision and when it switching, because of the color being imprinted on your eye the black and white looks like color
