At least you don't have credit cards with debt on them.

Yeah, credit cards once used are negative currency.

What do you mean negative currency? I just got my first three credit cards and they're great! I just give them to the store man and he gives me stuff. My wardrobe has never been so stylish, and I'm just LOVING all my accessories! How is this negative currency?

The problem is you're only borrowing enough money to make yourself the bank's bitch. All you need to do is borrow a critical sum of money and all of a sudden the world is your bitch.

[–]Konstiin 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not true at all. It's all in the hand of the consumer. As long as you pay off the credit in time, you're fine. If you don't, you're not. It's your fault, not the card's.

[–]Zincorium 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By negative currency, I was referring to it being a debt to be paid off rather than a bank account, and you're not exactly correcting me. Yes, a debt that is paid off is no problem, but it's still a debt, and you still have to use money you gain elsewhere to do so.

Credit cards wouldn't exist if they didn't transfer money to the issuer somehow, either through vendor fees or interest.

[–]blue_strat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you use a credit card responsibly, the bank will pay you to use it, on top of interest.

If you avoid credit cards etc. completely, have fun trying to get a mortgage.

BofA charged me $80 in fees for depositing a check around $10,000 because they put the money in slowly and then took it out again before putting the full check in. I contacted them and they investigated and didn't remove the charges.

Vent...Just got denied a raise. make $11/hr (30hrs week) at an i.t. service company. Coworker makes 15 an hour (full time), last guy made $34k/yr before he was fired. I work with a pitiful coworker who is overpaid, while I am underpaid. I do a very good job, with a very high satisfaction rate, although in I.T. nothing is ever perfect.

I asked for $14/hr (I have learned that companies are actually hiring for $18-19/hr full time, benefits and all. So I thought $14/hr was a great figure to work with, modest and so on...).

At the end of the discussion he mentioned he would raise this with upper management, but I made sure to ask him if he has any advice on how to live on $11/hr as a student. You wanna know what his remark was? If an engineer wants to make $100k/yr and his job doesn't call for it (say he made $60k now) he could go on up the road and get another job there, but my wage request was well with-in the norms of what people are paid in my exact same position based on other employees/searching on dice.com and other hiring websites for local companies who are hiring.

Since I did all of this research about other companies hiring in my exact same position I have a great list of places to start making resumes for, LOL.

Still...fuck that. $11/hr when my coworker who sucks at his job makes $15, and the last guy who worked there made $34k a year. In fact you should be happy to pay me $14, I don't work all the time and my cost varies as I work vs. the pitiful employee you have to pay a salary to (comes out to $15/hr + bennys, paid time off, sick days), I go home when there isn't work to be done, and I don't get overtime until summer time when my schedule opens up some.

It is just ridiculous, he is starting the Occupy Wallstreet movement in me. Now I am skipping my class, going to the gym because I am so ticked off that he had to nitpick on an imperfect hand off from one department to another. Cherry picking one example just to have something negative to say.

I believe he likes to not give college students the benefit of earning a "real wage" comparable to his out of college coworkers and he is put in a situation where the coworker that is being paid $15/hr is not capable of doing my job, so I have an absolute advantage and I am "strong arming him" to get a raise based on my poor coworkers inabilities. And I would have went from 10 - 11 to 14 an hour which is just a big gap, it is a "real number" I am asking for, not some 30 cent raise. I have no health insurance, I put 110% effort in to the job, I do my job well, life is not cheap, how else am I to do this?

[–]sgtpppr 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Get a new job. Life is full of douche bags. It doesn't mean you have to work for one. Looking for a new job is best done while employed at an existing one. If you're in the San Diego area, I'm trying to find someone to hire right now as an intern (probably at least $15/hr) that will probably turn into a full time position (it is the best I could get the management to do at the moment to help me; the new job would pay at least $40k/year starting off). Everyone I've interviewed either has the qualifications of a chimpanzee or thinks that anything less than $80k/year starting off is below them. I'd use reddit to broadcast job openings here, but I'd prefer my real life be kept separate from the insanity here.

[–]factory81 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally agree about looking for a job while employed. Shows the employer you are applying at that it isn't desperation for a job that you are applying, you are applying because you want a better job (more paying, more decision making, moving up the ranks you know) that you are most likely already pretty good at. I actually continued to work at my old job until 8-9 months after I was employed at my 2nd job. Basically I wasn't going to cut the string until I knew this job would be better then my last job......but now....now I am looking for more in a company I guess it seems and if they can't offer it I have to just....start the search again.

I am unfortunately not in the San Diego area though. Thankfully life is full of opportunity. Maybe another time ;)

[–]moneymark21 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depending on the job description though, starting out at 40k in San Diego is pretty low man, unless you're talking Help Desk bullshit IT work.

[–]sgtpppr 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then look for another job. People bitch and moan because they say they can't find a job no matter how hard they look (and even claim to work 3-4 jobs because they can't get full time hours), but then complain about making $40k a year to start? It's not rocket science and I don't even expect a degree. Free training, laptop and full benefits, super friendly and fun office...yet people will still complain because someone else makes more than them. I wish it was just on reddit, but it's the same story from people I interviewed. I'm up front about the pay and if they don't want it, then look for other work. I'm not saying they only deserve what we offer, but it's all I can get approved right now. I wish I made $100k/year, but you gotta start some place. Though, this is precisely why I don't post job opportunities here despite us hiring and me feeling bad for the people who really do need work.

[–]moneymark21 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why my edit didn't go through before your reply, but I intended to say that I completely agree with your initial statement that he should get a new job if he is unsatisfied. Talent can demand higher pay and if you don't have the skills to obtain the position that pays a salary you want, go learn them.

My statement was/is heavily dependent on the job description. A job earning 40k with full benefits that does not require a degree I would say is quite good.

[–]fassaction 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just my .02 cents here...

You should probably stop worrying what other people make, and how their work correlates to your own. I managed a helpdesk for a short period of time (that job was a nightmare) and I had someone similar to you working on my day shift crew. He was smart, and he was fairly good at what he was doing but his biggest downfall was that he was sooooooo concerned with everybody else. He would try and tell people how to do their job. Tell them what they were doing wrong. Tell me how much harder he worked/better he was at what he did than everybody else....Basically he was an annoying d-bag 99% of the time, and I actually ended up letting him go because he was causing issues with other employees.

See where I am going with this? He bitched, he moaned, and whined his way out of a promotion.

The only person who is in control of your own paycheck, is yourself. If you want to earn more money, and you think you are worth more....stop bitching, and start doing! There are places that will hire you. If you are as awesome as you say you are, people would love to hire a good technical support person. But they are not going to come knocking on your door, just because you are currently unhappy.

"If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place."

When negotiating wages I think it is important to consider what other employers in your geographic location are hiring for (E.g. identical position, now hiring ads, think dice.com and careerbuilder.com). The fact others have made their wages available for me to know allows me to also measure up how this company compensates individuals and further allows me to come up with a figure that is completely fair given the region, the job, and the companies past compensation.

My coworker is a bafoon though. Numbers don't lie, turn around time is horrible, breaking hardware (4000+ in sunk costs alone in 6 months with him), etc, etc. He is a whole other topic. Part of the reason for my request in raise is due to my increased efforts to make things run smooth given the loss of a coworker. You are spot on though, if I am a good tech then places will hire. It isn't what I want to do though to be honest, it is just a great "college job" until I can get in to consulting. Something I was hoping to do with this company now, buttttt I am not sure I want to continue my future there if this kind of tolerance for loafing employees (while we have a large work load) is accepted.

I do appreciate your insight though. Thanks for the conversation. I was rather frustrated by my managers decision, but he did say he would speak with upper management (who do favor me).

Here is something I have done that has worked pretty well. When denied a raise ask to have another meeting in 3 months and that you will show him you are worth the money. Work your ass off for those 90 days to prove it. Also look for another job, even if it isn't as good as the one you have now. At the meeting bring proof of your worth and if he still denies you be ready to walk. People can tell when you are ready to leave if you don't get what you deserve and he will react to it. Note this doesn't mean act lke an asshole,it means acting professional and knowing there is another option that you can go with.

Well I have worked at a OEM/VAR B&M store that was a great high volume surprisingly mom/pop shop in a metropolitan city. Great people, great job, economy did eventually hit them and sales was no longer a good job there. Then I moved to an ISP where the job was very difficult as you worked remotely with frustrated people, but you got to learn a lot in many areas. Finally now I am in a "full fledged" provider with services in every category basically, but I am facing the difficulties that I mentioned in the OP.

It doesn't seem like he feels as a part time employee I should be paid the same as a full time employee. In I.T. there is always a cert they want me to get, and they have been nagging at this one for a while now (basically because if my coworker gets fired we need another certified guy to drop in his place). I have been spending so much time working on just keeping the department in order + doing my own school work that I just can't say I have had time to study for that particular exam.

Also the company has a LOT of overhead. Quite a few project managers, etc etc. I know these are important to a company, but I am part of the company too

As a child, probably about 7 years old, I saw an ad for a wallet. It was $19, and I remember the image next to the pricing. The picture had some cash and an adult's ID. It was black leather, with just the right number of slots and flaps to hold all sorts of things I'd find in my travels. I wanted it so badly. I bugged my dad about it for days, endlessly, until he finally gave in and ordered it for me.

One day, after school, my mom said that a package had arrived for me. I eagerly tore it open, took out the wallet, and started crying. My mom asked me what was wrong, and I opened it up like in the OP's picture, and said that the money was missing. I thought that the $20, $5, and several $1 bills in the ad were part of the deal, and I imagined the millions I was going to make as I used that money to buy more wallets. My tears were for my crushed dreams.

I usually prioritize quite well and i got quite far on my student loan and i used to be able to buy allot of the things i wanted (weed). Then i failed school and i didn't get a loan anymore = couldn't afford weed = did better at school = got a loan = weed = bad school = no loan = no weed etc etc. The system works!
