Omg, can we replace the Yale Mascot with this puppy? I wouldn't be ashamed to call myself a bulldog if our mascot was this adorable. (Handsome Dan is fugly)

Look up olde english bulldogges. Not NEARLY as squat and pushed in as your run of the mill english bulldogs

upboats for oldies! we have three.

Relatively new breed though, less predictable on many behavioral traits. However much healthier.

If you prefer a lean version, look at Boxers and Boston Terriers. If you prefer the heft but want 4 more years of life, look at French Bulldogs.

I know the people that run a kennel that was one of the earliest to breed Oldies (original Hermes blood line) and have met a ton of these dogs and have yet to meet one who's temperament breaks the breed standard.

[–]gte910h 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They still die pretty early though, and temperament is not discernible merely by a visit, but by a lifetime with a dog.

You also sound like you know very high end dogs. I think generally speaking people underspend on purebreds when they buy them (Don't spend a little to get a purebred, get a mutt, or spend a good chunk).

A life span of 11-16 years on a dog of their size seems to me like a fairly long life span.

As far as high end dogs? I would recommend going to a high end breeder and asking about any dogs that break the breed standard. You get the benefit of all the care and expertise for a fraction of the cost due to what, in my case, was something that I didn't care about. (My dog has a brown nose with a pink dot on it, both of which disqualify her from showing or breading.)

[–]gte910h 0 points1 point ago

You actually are talking about buying the same dogs I buy. They call them "pet grade dogs" and if they're not making you sign a very forceful contract to spay the dog (or neuter). My little Boston was rejected because of face pink. I'm cool with that (but she can get sunburned there).

They're one of the lesser aggressive dogs towards humans (English bulldogs can be dog aggressive, but towards humans, they're less likely to bite than labs).

Bulldog owner here.

I used to get really pissed when people say this. I have a 3 y/o Bully and he has had a rough go. We got "Bulldog" surgery to help his breathing (Tonsils removed, Nostrils widened and Palette scraped) while that has stopped his reoccurring pneumonia, he has other health issues.

I now agree somewhat with this statement. He is an awesome dog and has a great personality, but he does not have it easy, nor does my wallet. I probably will never own another dog, because he is so awesome, but because I cannot watch another dog go through the issues they go through.

We were going to buy a bulldog, but got screwed out of the puppy by the breaders, who contract aside, decided to keep the pup for the breeding program.

Turned out great, we found out boston terriers have 100% of the adorable, with 0% of the issues walking up steps, and only about 60% of the heat sensitivity issues, and 150% of the lifespan of a bulldog, along with 0% of the skin issues.

Lincoln is very cute though :oD

[–]justinbting30 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks. He is a great dog, and right now allergies are the big issue, which is common in a lot of dogs, but it magnifies in Bulldogs. Boston Terriers are cool dogs, but they HATE Lincoln for some reason. We have 2 in the neighborhood and they both don't like him.

[–]mellinoxy 2 points3 points ago

I have an English bulldog too. She is the greatest girl on earth I tell you. The most submissive dog and always wants a tummy, butt, head rub, kisses, snuggles and hand shakes. ALWAYS!
But I do agree with the health issues. And the allergies are non stop and so hard to control. Any secrets you wanna share? To anyone thinking about getting an English Bully, do your research. They are expensive for life and if you can afford it, soooo worth it!

I'd post a pic of her but I'm usually just a Reddit lurker and this is my first comment. Don't know how yet. :(

[–]aerynsun 1 point2 points ago

I have a suggestion for the food allergies. Our bully, Briggs suffered for a year of eye infections before we finally thought maybe it was her food. We put her on a Limited Ingredient Diet and the syptoms disapeared over night! She is on Natural Balance's Sweet Potatoe & Bison food. Briggs has been a great addition to our family and she is also submissive and so playful. I just love her! I would post a pic too, but I don't know how either.

You're absolutely right. When making such a point, people accuse you of being mean, or even of hating bulldogs, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the exact opposite is true... A person who would breed for looks, without considering health implications is not an animal lover in my book at all. Buying by the same criteria isn't much better, except uh, perhaps you can claim ignorance?

The bulldog was bred from a big, healthy strong animal, into a biological disaster because people bred for looks. They didn't know any better. Now, we do. There are no excuses anymore.

Most bulldogs give birth by Caesarian section — because the animal is incapable of giving birth naturally. Hell, there breeds even worse off than that, some can't actually perform intercourse naturally — as in, they have been bred into a body shape where the dog cannot physically fuck...

How in the hell THAT doesn't ring warning bells with people is a bit of a mystery to me.

[–]gte910h -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, the breeding issues don't bother me: Pets who aren't being actively bread should be spayed or neutered anyhow.

True, the Cesarean costs do raise the cost of the animals, but no pets you're not trying to get pregnant should be able to get pregnant.

However, the english bulldog is one of those breeds with HORRIBLE health problems that sticks around because it is so well loved.

They usually die around 10 years of age, they sunburn, they are EXTREMELY sensitive to heat, and can die in an instant in it, they get arthritis, white ones go deaf, they often get large patches of skin disease, they usually have sleep issues, etc.

If you're looking at bulldogs, there are a set of another breeds that have significantly fewer health defects to look at:

1 Boston Terriers

2 Boxer

3 French Bulldogs

4 Staffordshire Bull Terrier

5 Olde English Bulldogge

6 Bull Mastiff

7 Mastiff

8 Italian Mastiff

American bulldog! The best of the bunch.

[–]tttt0tttt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Usually they can't be born in the natural way -- heads are too large. Their breathing is labored because of the distorted shape of the head, and they have jaw problems. Not a healthy breed. But there is the American bulldog to turn to, which is how bulldogs were meant to look.

[–]o2bmoody 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, Olde English Bulldogges are how they are supposed to look ;)

[–]o2bmoody 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like we need to specify what brand of bulldog this applies to.

I posted earlier in the thread about a breed called an "Olde English Bulldogge". While not akc recognized they were bread to return the dog to it's former health and stature while retaining the bravery and general temperament of the standard English Bulldog.

They are healthy, bully as hell, and just about the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet (mine is in the process of becoming a therapy dog as we speak).

I have to assume American and French bulldogs don't suffer from the same nagging ailments as the English as well but I have no experience with those breeds.

tl;dr: Not all bulldog breeds are created equally and to say that they don't deserve to live seems a bit harsh.

[–]barisaxyme -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They breathe just fine. Just like any other brachycephalic animal if they over exert themselves they may have trouble breathing. Generally if the breeders are legit they do not breed dogs with narrow trachea or soft palate issues. I love my bullies and their squished faces.

[–]DingDongSeven 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, they don't breathe just fine. They are unhealthy animals, bred for your amusement. They were once used for bull baiting, which thankfully is no longer with us, but how do you think these biological disasters of our days would fare against a bull?

If a biped such as a human being — not even a very athletic one — can outrun your dog, your dog is broken. It may be cute as a button, but it's clearly broken.

[–]o2bmoody -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't care enough to sight this but I believe that English bulldogs ended up so fucked because they were going extinct due to the fact that they were just to mean to own after the blood sports were banned in Europe.

The solution was to breed them with Pugs for their sweet disposition and with that came the short squat body, more severely squished face, and a ton of the health problems that pugs themselves carry inherently.

[–]DingDongSeven -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're making it sound as if the physical appearance of the animal was just an entirely unintended and unforeseen consequence of the breeding process.

There are a lot of breeds to choose from, if you're looking for a friendly disposition, so why the hell a pug — especially considering that the original bulldog was a very large animal. The first characteristic that comes to mind when you think of a pug isn't "friendly" — it's either "small" or "broken, but apparently adorable face."

They were bred to be small, physically adorable and cute lapdogs. The breeders weren't evil; they just didn't realize the consequences. But we do now. There's no excuse to keep breeding unhealthy breeds anymore.

[–]DingDongSeven -1 points0 points ago

I don't care enough to sight this but ...

Assuming this sentence is supposed to be parsed as "I don't care enough about this to look up a source," I'd say you have utterly failed to shed light on anything. If you don't care, you wouldn't have said anything. So you care. But you don't care enough to look up any relevant information — but you do care about offering your OPINION, no matter how ill informed it is.

So you've done the exact opposite of what you claim to have attempted. You've just added noise, garbage.

I have a fear of bulldogs due to an unfortunate incident as a child, I went to my aunts house and they had just bought a bulldog, after being in the house for 5 minutes the bulldog decides he like the look of my crotch, he quickly grabs on, and in an attempt to shake him off I start screaming and spinning round in circles while my aunt and mother look on, laughing at me. I should mention that Im a guy, so no this bulldog is not cute, they are pure evil with extra sharp teeth.

If you're ever confronted by muggers in the street, by popping a cycle pump up that dog's bum it could temporarily be inflated to two or three times its original size. True fact.
