Sounds like something straight out of The Onion.
[–]ImAllowedToSayFuck 66 points67 points68 points 11 months ago
why does it gotta be "straight" out of the onion, huh? huh?
[–]gojiramonster 28 points29 points30 points 11 months ago
Sounds like something gay out of The Onion.
[–]live_wire_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Amasing how that still works.
[–]nekowolf 11 points12 points13 points 11 months ago
Reminded me of this.
[–]killartoaster 1071 points1072 points1073 points 11 months ago
One time at school a guy called me a faggot and told me how much dick I sucked for a straight 50 minutes. I told the teacher several times about it and all he did was tell him to be quiet. Eventually I just got pissed of and told him "Hey I might be a faggot but at least I can get some you fat fucking piece of shit." He turned around and complained to the teacher and then I had to stay back after class and get told why its damaging to call someone fat. Really pissed me off when I was a kid. So to be honest this kind of crap does not surprise me in the least.
[–]majesticjg 168 points169 points170 points 11 months ago
My son was bullied in school and called a faggot, etc. etc.
I didn't feel like the school took it seriously, so I said to the dean, "So because he's gay, people are allowed to sexually harass him?"
It got very quiet. Suddenly, I had everyone's attention and the matter got resolved.
My son isn't gay (as far as I know) but it disgusted me that the response I got from the administration was predicated on what they presumed his sexual orientation to be.
Then I sat my son down and said, "Don't let it bother you if people call you those names." then I pointed out several people he knows that are family friends that are gay and said, "If you're like them, is that something to be ashamed of?" So now people can call him whatever they want, because "gay" and "faggot" is no longer a pejorative term to him.
[–]orrorin6 40 points41 points42 points 11 months ago
I like your internet vocabulary.
[–]majesticjg 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
And I like the cut of your jib!
(I don't know what a jib is, so if that's offensive, it's better that you ignore it.)
[–]khanfusion 12 points13 points14 points 11 months ago
Where did you say this to the administrators? Because in some places, they'd have taken your statement about your son's orientation literally, and then probably let "the secret" out to the student body.
[–]majesticjg 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
In a private meeting with the dean. I specifically worked around the issue later, so as to create some doubt because my son's sexual preferences are none of anyone's damn business.

This sounds like a case of the teacher thinking, "That problem child is being a dick again, I hope he gets put in prison soon so I don't have to deal with him. Oh, the nice kid is acting up? I can deal with that!"
Am I close?
[–]poopyfinger 72 points73 points74 points 11 months ago
As a substitute teacher I kind of agree with this. I can see why it would be easier to come down hard on the good kids, they listen to you, the bad ones just mouth off again and are less likely to do things you ask. Since I am a sub I come down like the Righteous Hammer of Thor on the bad kids, because what are they going to do to retaliate?
[–]AswanJaguar 45 points46 points47 points 11 months ago
Make up a pun on your last name and whisper it to their friends.
[–]brownboy13 44 points45 points46 points 11 months ago
I don't think a guy known as poopyfinger on the internet would give a shit about that.
[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 11 months ago
He has a lot of crap to deal with.
[–]joahw 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
The principal at my friend's elementary school went by the unfortunate name Mr Dickendorf. The kids had a field day with that one, with my personal favorite being "Mr. Dickisdwarf"
[–]emiliodelgado 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Mr. Bonner....is that you? I'm sorry we called you boner...just kidding no I'm not.
[–]Shinma 17 points18 points19 points 11 months ago
because what are they going to do to retaliate?
Start a rumor about you having a sexual relation with one of your students, ending your career and potentially your entire life in the outside world instantly with no trial or investigation based on nothing more than an unsubstantiated lie?
Or they'll just give you a wedgie, or something...
[–]poopyfinger 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Physically, I am larger than ALL of the students (not combined). I cold care less if they start a rumor, all the other teachers know me, most of the students like me, and this isn't my career, I am just doing this until I find more permanent work.
[–]Soup_and_a_Roll 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
Put shit in your car?
[–]excommunicated 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Shit on the nice ones, let the assholes roam free. Good call, instill that in them early.
[–]rowdyonthevex 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
as a high school student, thank you!
[–]killartoaster 64 points65 points66 points 11 months ago
Pretty much. I never really talked out of turn in class or anything, but for some reason one of my teachers used me as a target. So when someone was calling me names or whatever, if I complained I was told not to interrupt(I would put my hand up and wait to be called on), if I didn't the guy calling me names would just get louder until the teacher gave out to me for talking in class. That went on for about the first two years and then I just stopped giving a crap and argued with the teacher in the middle of his class if he gave me crap like that. Then I skipped transition year(Theres an optional year in Irish schools that you can opt. out of doing. Its supposed to be for broadening your horizons, but most of the time the people just do nothing for a year and I didn't want that) and really liked thee class I ended up.
[–]Soup_and_a_Roll 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
Sounds like it turned out OK. While I was reading that I got to "gave out" and though, 'Irish'. Now I feel like Columbo.
[–]killartoaster 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
Didn't even know that was an Irish thing, awesome.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Why is it that the good ones are the ones punished?? I always got in trouble for random crap I never did or the ONE time I talked out of turn, I'd get a long lecture about not talking out of turn. Crazy.
[–]nagrag 37 points38 points39 points 11 months ago
Sucking for 50 minutes is quite an achievement.
[–]theimben 59 points60 points61 points 11 months ago
I hate the excuses made by teachers about kids that don't behave themselves. They get away with so much just because they set the bar so low.
[–]davegod 25 points26 points27 points 11 months ago
I hate the excuses made by teachers parents about kids that don't behave themselves.
FTFY?
No, wait, parents don't make excuses, they just don't care, don't believe the teacher or rationalise that it's the teacher's fault.
[–]ForgettableUsername 15 points16 points17 points 11 months ago
I think it's because of rap music and grand theft auto. Niko Bellic is to blame.
[–]SlimeQ 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
everything i know about behavior i learned from GTA. remember that mission where roman has you mouth off to your teacher? classic.
[–][deleted] 97 points98 points99 points 11 months ago
Should have called your teacher a faggot and left.
[–]IMasturbateToMyself 138 points139 points140 points 11 months ago
No. Calling someone a faggot is not offensive. Should have called the teacher fat because it's DAMAGING.
[–]killartoaster 36 points37 points38 points 11 months ago
The teacher was really fat so maybe he was projecting :P
[–][deleted] 418 points419 points420 points 11 months ago
What the actual fuck.
[–]JimmyJamesMac 177 points178 points179 points 11 months ago
The only thing the world hates worse than bullies are the people who give bullies the retribution they so deserve.
[–]ForgettableUsername 44 points45 points46 points 11 months ago
Bullies tend to make surprisingly competent whiners.
[–]SmokingDroid 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
Yeah, I hate how in Southpark they used to balance Cartman's bullying sociopathy with the fact he was a whiny little bitch to his mom and then they tok it out. They need to bring that back.
[–][deleted] 113 points114 points115 points 11 months ago
I used to get emotional really easily... which is an easy target for bullying. I was also really tall, so if I ever fought back the teachers would lecture me.
"You're so much bigger than him, you could really hurt him".
[–]Friedchickenisha 131 points132 points133 points 11 months ago
I hated this logic in school. I had a bit of a reputation or being "tough" when I was in middle school/high school so older girls used to pick fights with me all the time. I was tall for my age and an athlete and had a history of fighting and I won (every single time) so I was the one that got in trouble, Iwas the one that got suspended, I was the one told "well you're much stronger and bigger than them, you could have really hurt them, you can't do that".
Even though I didn't pick a fight one single time in HS, I only retaliated when someone physically struck me. I was always getting suspended/arrested and eventually expelled from the only high school in my town my second time in grade 9 (between all the suspensions and time spent in Y/O jail I didn't have nearly enough hours to pass grade 9).
fuck that logic
[–]corporateswine 22 points23 points24 points 11 months ago
fucking samesies over (but as a male). If someones going to get hurt fighting us, that should be incentive for them to step their asses back in line, not ours.
[–]Friedchickenisha 33 points34 points35 points 11 months ago
Exactly, what are we supposed to do? Stand there and let someone beat the shit out of us? I'll admit I took it beyond simple self defense but I can only be pushed so far and if you punching me in the face = a broken cheekbone for you, you're the one at fault, not me.
[–]bad_pie 35 points36 points37 points 11 months ago
In elementary school I was the tallest kid in class and well built enough that I was occasionally asked if I played football. One day the tiniest kid in class kept jumping on my back and wrapping his arms around my neck choking me. Picture that scene from Princess Bride with Andre the Giant. I kept telling him that I was going to throw him on the ground if he kept it doing it. He kept doing it, I threw him on the ground. You can imagine how that looked from the teacher's point of view seeing the aftermath with him crying. I started to get in trouble but then I just said, "I told him I would do that if he kept jumping on me." To which the teacher responded, "Oh. Okay."
TL;DR: Some teachers don't suck.
[–]mijj 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
that could count as encouragement, too.
[–]JimmyJamesMac 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago
This was me. I grew up in a predominantly Hispanic area and most of them were way smaller than us "Anglo" kids.
[–]marswithrings 39 points40 points41 points 11 months ago
There was this kid at my middle school who was legally blind (let's call him Jim). Nothing actually wrong with him mentally and not actually blind; he just had really poor vision. But he acted like he was mentally retarded and tried to use it as an excuse to be an ass to people, just like he used his poor vision as an excuse to beat people with the cane he carried.
One day we were walking out of the locker room, and Jim's pulling his usual asshat antics. Then this other guy, we'll call him Bob, shoots some sort of one-liner at Jim to shut him up. But Jim just locks on to Bob and starts following him around, getting in his face and yelling at him and calling him names. Bob takes it like a boss, ignoring Jim's lame but very loud insults and invasion of personal space.
This goes on for several minutes as we're waiting for the bell to let us leave for lunch. And now it is escalating and Jim's actually starting to push and shove, so Bob, he looks straight at the teacher who's been standing there the whole time, points at Jim, and says, "You see this? You get him off of me, or I will defend myself. Now Bob - he's actually a pretty nice guy, but he was also a bit of a 'gangsta'. So when he says this, all of us knew he was dead serious. The teacher looked straight at Bob and then did nothing; several of us advised him immediately after this that he should do something.
Bob stands there for a minute waiting for the teacher to intervene, but when he doesn't, Bob turns around, visibly annoyed. Jim, who has been standing behind Bob, still being an asshat, haucks up a ball of saliva right on Bob's face as he turns around.
Two thuds - Bob's fist to Jim's jaw, Jim's face to the ground.
And right at that moment, a second teacher comes around the corner - just in time to see Bob level Jim afte enduring a good 5 minutes or more of harassment and abuse. Teacher 2 hauls Bob off to the office, while all the rest of us are either yelling at him to try and defend Bob, or yelling at Teacher 1 to DO SOMETHING.
The only bright side of this last part is that in the mayhem, nobody paid any attention to Jim crying his eyes out on the ground.
TL;DR 'Gangsta' kid I knew put up with a pathetic bully who pretended to be mentally handicapped to excuse his poor treatment of others for at least 5 minutes of harassment and a spit ball in the face before finally giving the asshat the sucker punch he deserved. Guess who got in trouble?
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
Yeah, we had a few kids like that at my elementary school. The teachers tried to FORCE us to be friends with them, and thought we weren't because they were weird or whatever. It wasn't. It was because they were dicks.
[–]neotropic9 21 points22 points23 points 11 months ago
This is only tangentially relevant, but I will share it anyways. When I was in kindergarten, another student asked if I wanted to trade my dinosaur for his truck. I said sure, and handed him the dinosaur. He didn't give me the truck. When I told the teacher, she said, and I quote "that'll teach you to trade". WTF? Teachers. Am I right?
[–]StabbyPants 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago
I had to stay back after class and get told why its damaging to call someone fat.
proper response: "where the fuck were you when he was harassing me for being gay?" Then leave before he can respond.
[–]dbe 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
That's when you get parents involved.
[–]Wiebelhaus 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago
That's bullshit man and I'm sorry you had to deal with that , straight folks like my family and myself are working to help change that. cheers man.
[–]Downpaymentblues 20 points21 points22 points 11 months ago
Absolutely ridiculous. A fat person can often change by losing weight. You can't realistically become "not gay".
[–]killartoaster 25 points26 points27 points 11 months ago*
I actually am not gay, it's just everybody at my school genuinely thought I was because I didn't have a girlfriend and was too shy to talk to girls. I'm not going to say that made it any better, but I'd really hate to think what going through that would be like if you actually were gay.
Edit: Actually come to think about it they started calling me gay back when I was still like 10 in primary school and this was when I was14/15, so maybe it was something that was carried over or whatever.
[–]clickity-click 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
As a tenured educator, I wholeheartedly approve of the teacher's handling of the situation.
[–]Loggie 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
I was getting called a faggot by a group of older kids one time on the bus. I got so pissed that I choked one until he passed out. And then they didn't do it anymore.
[–]dougthoreson 564 points565 points566 points 11 months ago
Clearly the bullying problem is the fault of the kids being bullied, not the other way around. Insightful.
[–]sidhartha83 353 points354 points355 points 11 months ago
Just like saying "If you don't want to be raped, don't dress slutty"
[–]fani 158 points159 points160 points 11 months ago
Women got raped even 200 years ago when the perpetrator had to spend 10mins getting the victims undressed. Its not about what they wear but more about a dangerous state of mind, show/force of power and taking by force.
Telling kids to act less gay is ridiculous and moronic because telling someone to be unnatural doesn't help.
[–]RobbieGee 42 points43 points44 points 11 months ago
Exactly. Rape is often not so much about sex, but power and control. How girls dress probably doesn't affect it much.
[–]Ratava 22 points23 points24 points 11 months ago
...That was exactly sidhartha83's point. "Don't dress slutty" has nothing to do with how they're dressed, just like saying "don't act gay" shouldn't be the response to bullied people.
[–]shoofle 15 points16 points17 points 11 months ago
Yeah, I think they were agreeing.
[–]xoe6eixi 78 points79 points80 points 11 months ago
when the perpetrator had to spend 10mins getting the victims undressed
Those were the days. Back when rape actually meant something.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
The sexual predators we have running around these days have it so easy, there is no challenge, no honor.
[–]huxtiblejones 44 points45 points46 points 11 months ago
God that makes me sick, such antiquated, misogynistic bullshit. People who suggest limiting freedoms to prevent crimes are the worst types of scumbags. It always results in a heavy-handed oppression that typically doesn't solve the problem but makes the victims miserable. I mean really, how shitty would you feel worrying if you're showing too much skin because it may justify a rape. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
[–]TheMidnighToker 46 points47 points48 points 11 months ago
I got told this multiple times through highschool :(
[–]executex 37 points38 points39 points 11 months ago
Honestly, as much as it is unfortunate, giving out the image that you are very violent and dangerous, really makes people not want to bully you. It's very animalistic.
[–]ChoHag 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
My bullying days stopped when I became the bully. Not my proudest moment but successful.
[–]gmorales87 21 points22 points23 points 11 months ago
Elaborate. Why would you stab a guy with a compass? Do you hate navigators or geometry? Both?
[–]insaneHoshi 27 points28 points29 points 11 months ago
its pointy?
[–]TheMidnighToker 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
I found it a lot easier to just not turn up, but yeah :)

"Just stop hitting yourself, seriously. Stop hitting yourself"
[–]ArabianBlue 40 points41 points42 points 11 months ago*
Why stop there? Let's just apply this to everything. Shower too cold? Be less gay. Bread too stale? Clearly, be less gay. Obviously.
Edit: Fixed my grammar
[–]akatherder 70 points71 points72 points 11 months ago
To be fair, it says act less gay, not be less gay. That opens another can of worms, but they aren't telling the kids that being gay is a choice. They are telling them that being flamboyant and fabulous is a choice.
Not that it's a reasonable way to deal with bullying, but take the rhetoric down a notch.
[–]HookerBot5000 19 points20 points21 points 11 months ago
Being flamboyant isn't necessarily a choice either (also just because you're gay doesn't mean you're flamboyant) its just how some people are. Just like some people are shy. Is it something you could force yourself to change? To an extent yes. But why should someone change their personality because some assholes don't like it?
[–]blackywomble 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Not trying to be a smart mouth, but probably because those assholes tease and torture them relentlessly.
[–]StuartGibson 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
I am neither flamboyant nor fabulous, and spent six years being bullied for being "gay".
[–]meeb 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Fake ungay. Gotcha.
[–]Downpaymentblues 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
Upvote for use of fabulous.
[–]puttmill 15 points16 points17 points 11 months ago
Shower too cold? Man up. (aka be less gay) Bread to stale? Man up. (Be less gay and learn some grammar too)
[–]vanillaafro 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
i don't understand why they wouldn't make it really strict then maybe the idiot bully kids learn how to treat people in real life too
[–]StoryGopher 19 points20 points21 points 11 months ago
Is there a link to the original article for some context or perhaps a location?
edit googled
[–]paolog 119 points120 points121 points 11 months ago
Getting bullied because you've got red hair? Just dye it a different colour.
Getting bullied because you're black? Just use skin-lightener and have plastic surgery.
Getting bullied because you're a girl? Have a sex change.
Hm, yes, I can see how this would work.
[–]Metalcows 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Delicious continuum fallacy.
[–]shegeki 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
While I think the wording isn't quite correct, I don't think the teacher was trying to say that the student should stop being gay. Rather, I think the advice was to stop acting in a certain type of way.
Think about that kid that would always suck up to teachers. If he/she got bullied, some good advice would be to stop sucking up to teachers. If you're being picked on for being prissy, good advice would be to stop being so prissy.
I think the teacher meant that if your being bullied for being stereotypically "gay", then cut it out. If a girl was acting that way, the advice would still be to cut it out.
I don't think that being gay means you have to act gay just like being a girl or being black doesn't mean you have to act a certain way.
The teacher should have taken action regardless, but I think the teacher might not have meant it in the worst possible way.
[–]contrary_stereo 16 points17 points18 points 11 months ago
It should be noted that it's not the PAPER that's making that claim / assertion. They're just quoting what someone else said. And they're not happy about it either.

Perhaps they think the only reason Homosexuals exists is because bullying has been banned.
[–]TheBoom305 32 points33 points34 points 11 months ago
I suggest going all the way with that one.. Why stop at "acting less gay"?.. Try "acting like a complete psycho bullying asshole", and punch the bully right in the mouth or tear out an eyeball. For the record, I don't condone violence (usually), but if the teachers have more of a problem with someone "acting too gay" as opposed to "acting like a fucking bully prick", then it's time someone showed these bullies how it feels to be stomped on for once.
[–]Sajun 11 points12 points13 points 11 months ago
Insanity Wolf would be proud.
[–]thekadar81 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
I agree. If the teacher is not going to do their job and deal with the bully, you have a right to protect yourself. If you don't think you can take the guy, go the other direction. Hit on him mercilessly and loudly. Talk about how great he would look sucking dick. Get him to snap in front of the teacher so they will have to deal with the problem.
[–]Super_King_ 12 points13 points14 points 11 months ago
"To avoid discrimination try being less black."

[–]poopyfinger 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
I really don't get why people have the need to "be themselves" all the time. I act differently around different people, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
[–]milkkore 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Telling the bullies to stop being assholes instead of asking the kids being bullied to hide who they are wasn’t an option apparently. I mean, who cares if these kids grow up under the impression that they deserve to be outcasts for being different, right? It’s just natural after all when someone shoots you because he couldn’t take your effeminate looks. If just this guy in Texas who was beaten, stabbed and set on fire at a party on Saturday would have dressed less like a fag! Same for the Scottish fella who was beaten, tied to a lamppost and burned last week.
Blaming the victim has a long tradition in our society. Just take the girls who dress “slutty”. The are clearly asking to get raped! And that’s why this whole “being gay is a choice” crap is so dangerous. Because if you suggest that someone deliberately choose to be a suppressed minority you are also saying it’s OK to bully them because, obviously, they could just stop being gay if they would like to have basic human rights. Just like those pesky women who could just stop being women to get equal pay for their work.
[–]baggybottom 100 points101 points102 points 11 months ago

From what I'm told it's an affectation used by fems to try to sound less masculine and more submissive in attempts to make themselves more attractive to the more butch homosexuals....basically the opposite of what a guy does when he tries to sound more masculine (lowering the pitch and timbre and adding more bass) when he wants to impress somebody. It's the same thing done throughout the animal kingdom, the submissive creature always raises it's pitch (think the whine of a dog when he's in trouble)
[–]goddamnferret 67 points68 points69 points 11 months ago
Good explanation. I've always wondered this myself.
I'm gay and masculine, but I do have a couple of fruity traits that come out when I'm really excited. I've never been able to understand the lisp though. It's a fairly uncommon trait from my experience, but the people who have it always have it very strongly. I've never experienced anyone in the middle.
I feel bad, but I can not stop giggling when someone is talking with a strong lisp. Every time they say something like "Hayyyy sugar", I have to bite my tongue.
[–]inibrius 42 points43 points44 points 11 months ago
I really think that the lisp is really an affectation, just like any accent (remember valley girl speak in the 80's or goth speak in the 90's?) If you talk a certain way long enough it becomes second nature. (for me it's using 'fuck' as a comma in conversation).
But yea, really camp people are hilarious.
[–]CressCrowbits 16 points17 points18 points 11 months ago
Wait ... what was 'goth speak' in the 90s?
[–]inibrius 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
think Robert Smith. Trying to be gloomy and stuff.
[–]klapaucius 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
"Being gloomy" is not exactly a dialect.
[–]sje46 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
I'm guessing it's how the goths on South Park speak. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_V2oayrdgo
I don't remember goths actually speaking like that though.
[–]whiteboy1190 24 points25 points26 points 11 months ago
But yeah (fuck) really camp people are hilarious.
FTFY
[–]MaeBeWeird 22 points23 points24 points 11 months ago
The lisp, I've actually know a few (very few, but few) straight men who spoke like that. It's honestly not a conscious thing for them and it bothers them that everyone assumes they are gay by it.
[–]momoichigo 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Herman Cain spoke like that when he said he never sexually harassed anyone. Every time I hear his sentence I want to add, "Like, totally" at the end.
[–]ThePharoah 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
I'm probably going to get down-voted for this, but here goes. I grew up in San Francisco and it was weird, many of my friends finally worked up the courage to come out of the closet...then all of a sudden their gestures entirely changed and they developed a lisp! Far more common than the corner case you are suggesting.
Then, once they'd been in the community long enough, it subsided back into their old gestures. Compare it to white kids getting into rap and talking super ghetto in middle school, then realizing they didn't have to talk that way to like rap. Rap equals Cock in this analogy. :P
In the community, people get defensive when you ask about this, they call it "Acting Straight" just as speaking properly in some African American communities is referred to as, "Acting White."
Please don't think that I'm saying there is anything wrong with the change, it's just a sensitive subject for a lot of people.
I'm not sure I have the answer to why the phenomenon happens, but I suspect it is just an attempt to assimilate into a new culture.
I have met a few folks that legitimately were excitable flamboyant folks, but far more that were doing it for acceptance.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago
I'm certainly not an expert but I have always thought it may be the result of a cultural positive feedback loop. Although things aren't perfect today, society was MUCH less approving of LGBT individuals in decades past. This led to the creation of gay-friendly communities, especially in densely populated cities and, as with any community, a unique culture is created. Of course one can't escape biology and psychology and therefore, regardless of race, nationality, sexual orientation, everyone wants to fit in. So, if a certain pattern of intonation develops within the culture, immigrants to that cultural sphere will be likely to adopts the mannerisms of their neighbors.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 11 months ago
fems to try to sound less masculine and more submissive in attempts to make themselves more attractive to the more butch homosexuals
Implying you never have two gay men who both use that affectation?
[–]literroy 51 points52 points53 points 11 months ago
This is patently ridiculous. There are lots of gay men who talk in "gay voice" in contexts in which they have no interest in attracting anyone. There are lots of gay men who talk in "gay voice" who have absolutely no desire to attract butch men. There are lots of non-submissive gay men who talk in a "gay voice." And there are even some straight guys who have a bad case of "gay voice."
"Gay voice" does not equal submissive.
I don't know where "gay voice" actually does come from. If I had to offer some arguments, I would imagine it's a combination of: a) gay men choosing not to alter their natural pitch to sound lower like some straight men probably would if their natural pitch is higher than is usually considered masculine. b) a cultural component - if you hang around a lot of other people who have certain tones of voice, you tend to unconsciously begin imitating that tone (after spending a week in London, I started saying some words in a very British way, because I'd been constantly exposed to it for a while) c) stereotypes of gay men tend to have high pitched voices, so people trying to figure out their own gay identity might imitate what they see on TV (either consciously or unconsciously).
I also somewhat question the assumption behind the question. Why not ask where "straight voice" comes from? Just because it's the cultural norm, doesn't mean it's natural, and "gay voice" is somehow unnatural.
[–]atomic811 37 points38 points39 points 11 months ago
I am gay I will answer. It is not in your control. The voice anyway. The gay men that fling the hands you don't have to do that. I have what I call a "half fag" voice and I hate it. I wish it was just normal so I could completely "pass", but nope there it is. So when I have to completely pass esp around aggressive males and where I maybe in danger I speak a lot less or with one or two words. Maybe I could practice it out of me, but that may take some time. Thankfully I am not full on fem voice because being gay even that irritates me.
[–]literroy 19 points20 points21 points 11 months ago
I really hope you find it in yourself to embrace everything that makes you you, and no longer worry your inability to hide yourself from the world. I know it's hard, but when that day comes, you'll be happier for it.
[–]litronix 20 points21 points22 points 11 months ago
I read both these paragraphs in "gay voice". I tried not to, but it happened anyway.
[–]jimmy17 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
I have heard many straight people talk with a "gay" voice. And many gay people do not speak in any particular way. My guess is it's just confirmation bias.
[–]blorg 13 points14 points15 points 11 months ago
It's not, it is something that definitely exists. Interesting blog in the Economist lists as components:
Of course many, probably most gay people don't speak this way (and indeed some straight people do) but there is a positive correlation between speaking in this way and being gay, and studies have shown people to be able to detect this based on listening to speech patterns.
Interesting article here concerned with code switching- while with some gay men the accent may be involuntary, with many they can turn it up or down depending on whether they want to hide or project their sexuality.
[–]huxtiblejones 27 points28 points29 points 11 months ago
Being threatened with lynching from the KKK? Just act like less of a nigger!
How is it even kind of okay to suggest kids should suppress their own personality because bigoted cunts assault them over it? I am more shocked that reddit is actually defending this shit.
[–]g_for_gnome 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago
The headline's probably sensationalist. One of my best friends is gay and we first met when he was being the most irritating queen on earth in a nightclub. I told him to fuck off when he was prancing around with a feather boa in my face. He questioned if i was homophobic. I then made a point of telling his girl friend, who was equally queeny, to fuck off, too. There's a big difference between being a 'queen' and being gay. He's now my friend and is a normal dude who happens to like men. When you're dealing with idiot teenagers, I'd say it's pretty good advice despite it appearing on face value to be politically incorrect.
[–]cravf 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
The headline's probably sensationalist.
Absolutely. Have people forgotten that news sources make shit up constantly?
Playing the devil's advocate here, but what are the chances that something like this could be turned into the headline with no effort at all:
"Gay kid runs around jokingly making passes at some other dude, and the dude gets pissed off and yells at the gay kid. (or punches him, or whatever) Then the gay kid runs to the teacher and tells on the 'bully' for attacking him and the teacher tells the gay kid that 'maybe you shouldn't have acted like that.' Then the kid asks, 'What, acting gay?' Teacher then says, 'Yeah,' and the kid tells their parents when they get home that the teacher told him to act less gay to stop being bullied. Parents call the news, news eats it up"
It may seem contrived, but I've worked with kids (around 5 years), and this is a very common tactic. (I've never dealt with a situation with a gay kid like in this case though) A lot of times you'll see some kid acting like an idiot and finally piss someone off to the extent that they start a fight. Then the kid that was acting like an idiot would run up to me and tell on the other kid. Typically at this point I'd make both of the kids run a lap or something, one for being an idiot, and the other for attacking the idiot.
In all honesty, I think this is more likely. It's still possible the teachers were ass clowns, and the kids were actually getting bullied but there's no way for us to know either way from this picture of the headline.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
In high school my best friend was the "weird kid" she dyed her hair and dressed differently. She was getting picked on a lot and went to the counselor. He told her to try and act more normal. Stay classy, educators.
[–]Hyperian 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
i'm sure these people say the same thing about civil rights. just be less black.
[–]TalkingBackAgain 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Bring a knuckleduster. Smash the guy's teeth in. When they ask you why you did that instead of telling teacher: "I was trying to be less gay. Do you think I nailed it?"
[–]BreSput 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Being raped? Act less resistant advises women right's activists.
[–]cheshirecatsmiley 53 points54 points55 points 11 months ago
This kind of "advice" angers me to no end. Why is it the victim's fault? Why can't you tell the bully to, oh I don't know, stop being a fucking douchebag and leave other kids alone?
[–]rallion 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
Why can't you tell the bully to, oh I don't know, stop being a fucking douchebag and leave other kids alone?
Oh, man, I can't believe nobody ever thought of that before. Problem solved.
[–]arabjuice 31 points32 points33 points 11 months ago
It's not the victims fault, but you can still do things to make yourself a less easy target.
[–]jimmy17 77 points78 points79 points 11 months ago

[–]Strom-Thurmond 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago

Lol, its funny because I am typing from the Strom Thurmond Center at Clemson University.
[–]mastercheef 14 points15 points16 points 11 months ago
"acting" gay doesn't mean shit. If a bully knows you're gay, it doesn't matter how gay you act. A friend of mine committed suicide yesterday, because of the shit he took for being gay. He was one of the least flamboyant acting gay men I've ever met. Had he not been out of the closet, you would have never known.
Fuck this article. I miss you, buddy.
[–]nameisntjohn 15 points16 points17 points 11 months ago
What is sad is that this type advice gets dispensed to outsiders of all types all of the time. Victim blaming is rampant because people don't want to change.
Can't find a husband? Kids teasing you during lunch? Lose some weight fatty! People making fun of your religion? Stop wearing a religious symbol around your neck and making yourself a target. You got raped? Maybe you shouldn't wear a short skirt when you go out.
[–]yourdadsbff 20 points21 points22 points 11 months ago
Goddamn, some of the comments on this post are depressing. And by "depressing" I mean "rage-inducing."
Fuck everything about this "just act less faggy" attitude. Being "annoying" (which, last time I checked, is a subjective judgment) does not justify getting bullied in return. The more we espouse opinions like that in the headline, the more we condone making fun of people who are different. It's tacitly admitting that the victim deserves to get bullied simply because s/he were acting in such a way as to make them stand out. And it doesn't do anything to actually address the source of the bullying itself; it simply tries to sweep the problem under the rug.
"Oh, just act more like a boy and you won't get beaten up." Not only is this not accurate anyway (I knew several "masculine-acting" boys who were targets of bullying in high school) but it reinforces the very cultural attitudes that lead to this kind of bullying in the first place.
Want to prepare these kids for "the real world"? Then how about teaching them to tolerate differences and not physically harass people they find annoying or "strange"? It might be easier to criticize the victims in this case, but that doesn't make it right.
[–]WildPlastic 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
The responses in this thread are really depressing.
[–]Nickster79 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
As a teacher, I can't believe that this was ever said. Even if it was misspoken/misinterpreted as "stop acting out so much" towards a kid with stereotypically gay mannerisms (gay or not, kids that act out to draw attention to themselves are a huge distraction), a child's sexual orientation should not enter the dialogue when they are being disciplined.
However, in my experience, most gay kids in middle school (who usually have not come to terms with it) are quiet and a bit withdrawn, which is normally the result of not fitting in, feeling very different, and unfortunately, bullying. The last thing a gay kids needs is to be told that how they were born is "wrong."
I know it's not much and I can't win the battle by myself, but you better believe that homophobic bullying does not fly in my classroom.
[–]kyledouglas521 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
Okay, I'm seeing a lot of comments on here turning "acting gay" into an equivalent of having feminine qualities, and it's really starting to bother me. Femininity is not a measure of how gay a man is, nor is masculinity a measure of how gay a woman is, and if we keep reinforcing that homosexuality and gender bending are one in the same, then that misinformation will be passed down to the next generation as well.
[–][deleted] 28 points29 points30 points 11 months ago
Did we just find an answer to bullying problem?
[–]flukshun 18 points19 points20 points 11 months ago
yes, unfortunately it doesn't work if you're a white kid being bullied by black kids in an inner-city school, or a black kid being bullied by white kids in a rural school, or a smart/nerdy kid getting bullied by retards (well...i suppose you could start flunking all your classes just to fit in)..
but yah, pretty much solved.
i know a better one though: bullies act less like douchebags
Unfortunately, I have seen kids start flunking all their classes to try and fit in and earn some type of stupid "street cred." It kills me when we can't get them to turn it around because some of these kids are really intelligent, but have no social guidance at home.
[–]huxtiblejones 49 points50 points51 points 11 months ago
Problem: Asshole children assault others who are 'different'
Solution: Homogenize children by encouraging them to 'act normal' and repress their personalities to avoid beatings.
This is the solution I'd expect from a troglodyte.
[–]atomic811 39 points40 points41 points 11 months ago
"Don't want to get lynched? Try acting and looking less black." That is how dumb that headline is.
[–]LEAFsaw 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Does anyone have the full article to this?
[–]nebber 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
My form tutor said to me in Year 7, after a period of being bullied, "have you thought maybe you need to change how you act, like, be a bit cooler?".
Then at parents evening he read my report to my parents following along the text with his finger. I moved schools.
[–]scott144 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago

Bullying sucks, but you have to think about who is allowing them to continue their bullying. It's the teachers. I speak from experience. When I was in Middle School, I was bullied a lot. They did terrible things to me. I've been cornered in gym class and beaten for a good half hour, pushed down a flight of stairs, the list goes on. But any time I told a teacher, the bullies were simply forced to apologize and that was it. Less than a week later, they'd be at it again. For anyone who's still in grade school and bullied a lot, I have these words of wisdom to pass on:
Stand up for yourself. I know it hurts, but NEVER contemplate suicide. You're only letting the bullies win. Instead of hurting yourself, hurt them. It offers much more personal satisfaction.
Teachers will not help you. If anything, they are passive bystanders and therefore just as guilty as a bully. Tell them that when you finally stand up for yourself and YOU get punished for it.
Bullies are bad people. It doesn't matter if they have an unfortunate upbringing. They can still control their actions, and because of that, they do not deserve to be felt sorry for. You are most likely a good person who never does anything wrong. Therefore, if you stand up for yourself and push back, you're doing the world a service by putting a bad person in their place.
Hurt the bully so badly that they become scared of you. If you simply punch them or push them, they will just punch or push harder. You have to physically injure them and make them think you're an unstable, insane person who would injure them more if they tried to fight back. The only language bullies can understand is force. It's polite to speak in another person's language.
Hope that helps. BTW this is not trolling. I am 100% serious. If I had heeded these words when I was young, I'd have been a much happier teenager.

[–]green169 53 points54 points55 points 11 months ago
Yup. Bullies generally pick on people who are different from the rest of the group.
[–][deleted] 124 points125 points126 points 11 months ago*
Right, but surely that's the bully's problem and not the victim? It's hardly a good route for society to go down when we start telling kids not to be themselves because someone else might not like it.
[–]bstampl1 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Just redefine "crime" and "victim" and YAY crime rate drops to zero!
[–]Frix 50 points51 points52 points 11 months ago
It's not their fault, but it is their problem. And while I agree that in a perfect world you shouldn't have to be bullied for being gay, it's not much of a solution to a kid that gets beaten every day now is it?
Consider this analogy:
Stealing is wrong and in perfect world it shouldn't happen. But this is the real world, so lock your bike up if you park it or it will be gone! And sure it's not your fault it got stolen and the guy who did is wrong <insert all cliches here>... but that doesn't really help you if you have to walk home from now on does it? Buying a lock on the other hand will help to solve your thieving-problem.
[–]Mo0man 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
The difference is that if you can catch the fucker who does it, and bring them to the police, the police shouldn't say "Hey, you should have locked up your bike! Mr. Thief, you're free to go"
[–]ribread3 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
A more valid analogy would be a cop watching someone's bike being stolen and, rather than stopping the theft, turning to that person and saying, "Should have locked your bike."
[–]alliha 23 points24 points25 points 11 months ago
Yea, it's obviously the victim's fault for being bullied.
Same way it's a woman's fault for rape when she dresses slutty.
[–]MainlandX 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
I really wish people would stop blaming the rapists and bullies for all the problems they cause.
[–]Sorgenlos 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Are you a ventriloquist? Because I've never seen someone so good at putting words in another's mouth.
[–]Fa1nT 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
He didn't say it was the victims fault, he said that it is probably true that acting less homosexual would get you bullied less, which is factual.
[–]poopsquad 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
since bully's pick on those that are different, the answer to the problem must be for all of us to be bully's! then no one will be different
[–]MrRaz 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
So THAT'S why they kept bullying me! I wish my teachers were this wise.

I realize bullying is a problem, always has been a problem, and always will be a problem, but you know how it was solved when I was in school? One of two ways: fucking ignore the dumbshits, or fucking push their dumbshit leader on their ass in front of all their dumbshit bully friends.
"Telling on someone" doesn't work in the real world unless you want to get laughed at or thought of as a baby.
Grow some balls, and take care of the problem yourself.

That remind me a headline after a budget cut in a geography program in a public school: ''Just google it''....
Why do people feel that school teachers are the fonts of wisdom and knowledge? They're not. They're just regular human and believe me, there is a heaping helping of teachers in schools who simply should never have been put through teachers college and should never have been certed to teach. But, when we make everything about cost and price, who gives a fuck about quality teachers right?
[–]lux22 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago

I feel it is pretty sound advice, not in the derogatory your a homosexual context, but in the context of stop being gay in the sense that you are being flimsy and weak, stand up for yourself, if it is a serious problem, start going to the gym, take some self defense classes, come back the next year and kindly inform him (because violence is not a sound option) that you are tired of his shit and that he should mind his own fucking business, if he protests and continues, slug him in the chiclets.
I was consistently bullied when i was in high school, Despite being 6'6 by grade 10 i was tall and skinny, i smoked a lot of weed at that point so i was all about love, respect and forgiveness. I had a lot of friends, and was never socially awkward, but there are some who don't take kindly to the personable guy, especially, when i showed weakness and never stood up for myself. Like a wounded animal i would ignore it whenever this group of hardcore gang bangers would call me faggot nazi, even though i wasn't gay or german. But like in the animal world when i bow my head, and back off, it only invites these mid level beta males to continue doing it, shoving me into lockers and shit. So i took my own advice, i stopped being a little "fag", went to the gym, took Israeli jujitsu my older cousin taught. When i came back the next year i was 6'6 205 pounds, big for gr 11. One of the bullies tentatively tried to pull some crap, but without hesitating mid class, i confidently told him, if he wished to continue this, and there was nothing verbally i could say to deter him, that we should step outside and solve this like real men, he declined, and later apologized. Second group of bullies, i use that word lightly because they were little wannabe gangster thugs, the alpha of their group tried push me into an open locker while i was walking, now again violence is less than ideal way of solving your problems, but protecting your body from physical harm is warranted on some occasions, and i broke his finger, snapped the thing right in half, and being overly angry and less calm, informed his friends that i would break bones that they really needed if they fucked with me again. I was suspended for a week, had to talk to the school counselor for a week, but after that, no one fucked with me. Why? because i stopped being a "gay" pussy, nutted up, took control of my body and my mind, and became an Alpha, and as much as we like to think otherwise, we still act in primitive animal ways, and when you show CORE CONFIDENCE, no matter how you attain it, the chances of you getting bullied Dramatically drop.
ps. i have gay friends, so don't feel i am in anyway being derogatory. That is your interpretation if you feel so, i am letting you know, there is absolutely no derogatory connotation when i say "gay"

[–]Nerdherd99 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
According to Herman Cain's philosophy, if your being bullied by being called gay: "it's your own damn fault". I was a Smaller guy in K-8 and was bullied and made fun of everyday. then i hit a growth spurt and all of a sudden i was taller, stronger, and better looking then those ass-hats. in high school they tried the same shit, I proceeded to systematically beat the living shit out of each and everyone of them and then hooked up with their GF's. thus no more bullying and i fight no more. I don't advocate Physical Revenge but sometimes it is what is absolutely necessary to keep them off you.
I am gay.
Rule 1 for teenage gays is "Don't make yourself a target."
I'm not saying that it's a good idea to place the burden on the victim, but this advice would help the victim to avoid situations in which they would be singled out as different.
/justmyopinion
All I could read was, "go away, I'm baitin' ".
This is more about terrible parents who shouldn't have children than it is about kids performing homosexual or happy acts. If you think this mentality is correct, you may be a bad parent.

I'm gonna say this to say this because I see the term feminine being thrown around a lot.. you have to take into account the fact that you are no longer in touch and culture for kids these age has changed considerably.
While I'd also argue the entire concept of 'feminine' is a bit out dated, have you really thought about what kids now are like? Scene or whatever you want to call them kids make up a large percentage, going to most schools now and there is no 'that one goth kid'. Crazy shit like that is mainstream to them, and depending where you are it's not considered feminine or gay by most. I've talked to homophobic kids who you would probably flash judge as the one awkward kid who eats alone and spends 6 hours on hair and shit. Even the preppy types have blended, skinny jeans are normal for everyone lately. Even a couple years ago when I was still in high school it was entirely normal for absolutely everyone to have skinny jeans. Make up is no longer just for chicks.
What I'm saying is the people who get targeted by bullies are targeted because they won't fight back or even better take it personally. These bullies aren't crusaders for the cause of beating the gay out of other kids, they just like beating kids. Gay is a convenient excuse. They could give less of a shit what the insult is, if it works. Used to be spending hours online every day was enough to make you an outcast. Kids now will make fun of you for not being all into Facebook and Tumblr and Lemonparty or whatever it is. My point is you are thinking of the whole thing as if things were anywhere close to how they were for you. You can say I'm young or whatever, but that's exactly the point. There's already an entire wave of kids who have entirely different cultures from even when I was still in school.
TL;DR: People who are saying anything along the lines of 'kids who come off as gay/feminine/French will always get bullied' don't understand bullying. Targets are chosen because how they react. In the same school one person could be driven to suicide for being gay, while another is one of the most popular kids. Youth culture has changed and what might have been considered girly when you were a kid is probably the cool thing to do today. My senior year the latest wave of freshman thought being straight edge and scene was the thing to do. Doing drugs and what not were the thing to do when it was my turn.
TL;DR for the TL;DR: Bullying has nothing to do with whatever bullshit reason is given. Bullies don't target gay kids, they target easy targets. Hell, half the bullied kids probably aren't even gay. Just remember, bullies are bullies. They like to hurt, they don't really give a shit why as long as it works.
