This is an elephant fetus. Full term baby elephants are much larger weigh ~200 lbs at birth. Elephant gestation is 22 months a calf stands 3 ft at the shoulder and stands within an hour of being born.

why are its eyes open

[–]pdxpogo 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can die with your eyes open. More often then not you do.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i am aware of this......the point is that why are its eyes developed that far

[–]pdxpogo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The eyes are formed early in the development of mammals. The human eye is complete by the end of the first trimester (12th week) and the elephant has their eyes by the seventh month. I'd say this elephant fetus is about 8 months of gestation, the ears have not migrated from the neck to the side of the head by the 10th month the ears will be in place.

That's a fetus. It doesn't even have 'eyes' it has proto-eyes and there aren't any eyelids to open or close.

Anyone who's seen a photo of a fetus of any animal will recognize the black dots as the pre-eyes.

I think you need to study some more embryology. The eyes are formed by the end of the first third of the pregnancy. At about 7 months in the case of an elephant. Proto-eyes exist in the embryo stage of development.

You ever see a baby of any kind be born alive with its open?

[–]saysfuckalot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The verb born indicates life. So being born alive is redundant.

All 3 of my children were born (alive) with their eyes open. Most mammals are born (alive) with their eyes open in fact.

[–]MsFrightlin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most mammals can't open their eyes for 2 weeks after birth.

[–]LarryTheSatelliteGuy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my point exactly. If its so premature why does it have open eyes. It was never born clearly

[–]MsFrightlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm assuming they just happened to be open when it died, elephants are born with them open so that means it had control over it eyes while inside the womb

[–]ex_ample -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, it's a way undeveloped fetus. Eyelids hadn't grown in yet so there would be no way to close it's eyes.

[–]ex_ample -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wtf are you talking about? No one ever said it was born. The person you replied to said: "This is an elephant fetus." Early fetuses don't have eyelids.

[–]pdxpogo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are thinking of cats and dogs and rodents. Ungulates all are born with their eyes open. As are cetaceans, primates, sirens.

[–]MsFrightlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No shit. I never said ALL mammals.

[–]pdxpogo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You said most. We are talking about an ungulate (the tiny elephant).

You kiss your mother with that mouth?

[–]MsFrightlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know what ungulate means, I'm sure your mother is proud of your "big words"

[–]pdxpogo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ungulate isn't a big word it describes the class of animal an elephant is. It includes cattle deer bison pigs horses sheep goats hyrax rhinos hippos llamas alpacas zebra donkeys antelope elk moose giraffe. Even the duogong is an undulate.

Words exist for a reason why not use them?

[–]Codebender 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wrong!

Born is an adjective.

[–]saysfuckalot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not if it's acting as a past participle.

[–]ex_ample 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it's eyelids haven't developed yet?

[–]mimus09 0 points1 point ago

[–]classyGent69 1 point2 points ago

Elephants can miscarry too?

[–]pdxpogo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

misscarriage?

[–]tinkatiza 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

think he meant a still birth

[–]pdxpogo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wasn't carried to term. Stillbirth is usually reserved for a full to near full-term baby that is born dead.

[–]tinkatiza 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ahhh. must've used the wrong term. I dunno what the hell it's called

[–]ex_ample 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called miscarriage.

We have an elephant breeding program at the Portland zoo, we got to learn a lot about baby elephants here. We were treated to an actual birth on camera here.

The worst part about elephant abortion is that the mother never forgets.

[–]deathcomesilent 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it even alive?

[–]FlightlessLobster 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Baby elephants are much bigger than that. You just awww'd at a fetus. creep.

[–]IIdsandsII 9 points10 points ago

I looked at your second link thinking I'd see cute baby elephants, and then I noticed this. WTF?

[–]pics-or-didnt-happen 4 points5 points ago

Don't blame me, I don't run the google.

[–]yunocucumber 1 point2 points ago

Photoshop. Compare to pic in top left of same google image search.

[–]Lil_Boots1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I know, but it's definitely a WTF photoshop, or maybe more of a why on earth. I'm guessing an elephant-elephant seal mashup, but it was still pretty startling.

[–]FlareHeart -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Poachers...they cut off the trunks when cutting off the ivory. Why? I'm guessing to prevent the elephant from grabbing them with their trunks and to make the tusks easier to access.

http://blog.wildlife-pictures-online.com/tag/elephant-poaching/

Terrible.

EDIT: Really? The poster above me was asking WTF on the baby elephant with no tusks and no trunk. I provided an answer, thus contributing to the conversation. AHEM

[–]Lil_Boots1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except for the part where the likelihood of the elephant surviving the massive hemorrhage is unlikely. Also, the photo is definitely a shopped version of the top left elephant and an elephant seal

[–]FlareHeart 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

'Shopped yes, but that doesn't change the fact that the chopping off of the trunks of elephants still happens in the name of poaching. The ('shopped) picture of the trunk-less elephant reminded me of it, that's all.

[–]clumsyturtle 4 points5 points ago

My Biology teacher has several dead baby animals in jars in her cupboard in class, one is a cow from a slaughtered adult cow that had it in it's body after they cut it open.

They're fascinating and creepy at the same time.

Of course. It means penis, right?

[–]Tattycakes 0 points1 point ago

I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. You're kinda weird =/ Also, could it be part of the umbilical?

Is there any way that we can ruin them genetically so that we can have tiny little elephant abominations?
