Unless you are running disc brakes or riding fixed, brakes tend to freeze over pretty quick in those conditions. The habit just carried over into spring a few years ago and stuck.

Well, when the brakes freeze over, yes. Winter is a clusterfuck as it is, and I have waited at green lights while cars slide sideways through their red lights. I definitely ride a lot slower in winter though, and there aren't nearly as many cars on the road thankfully.

Next winter I plan on upgrading to a 29er with disc brakes. I don't see how a rear drum brake would serve any extra function in winter conditions, but I could definitely see how they would compliment a front brake well for the rest of the year and have thought of getting one from time to time. I think my dream winter bike would have a 29er with an internal geared hub and disc brakes on each wheel.

*Edit: It's also amazing to me how such a distinct thing seems to only existing in a single picture, from a single website on Google (through the first 5 pages of results). Every result for "Kleven, Ukraine Tunnel of Love" ended up coming back to this single pictures and site (by the same author). Something so beautiful has certainly had to have been photographed a million more times, yet just this one reference is found.

**Edit # 2 : No results of a Klevin, Ukraine from Wikipedia. A further search shoes that Kleven is actually the name of a stream in the Ukraine. Hmmm.
