whatever respect i had left for the Emmy's was entirely snuffed out when he got completely snubbed by the fucking big bang theory.

Sure, Jim Parsons plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper very well, but I agree with Rainn 100%. But I bet Carrell has a couple million reasons to not give that much of a fuck about it.

The Emmy's have respect? Coulda fooled me. Sort of like the Oscars and Goodfellas, eh?

Ricky Gervais would have something to say about that. :P

But I agree, The Office is just not the same without him. :(

I loved Michael Scott, but honestly I find myself enjoying the Office without him.

[–]feedthecollapse 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

truth be told, I kind of like the Office now better than the past season or two. I know I'll get downvoted for this, but Michael Scott was making the show completely unwatchable for a while. I don't really like Andy, but the show at least doesn't have a wholly (unintentionally) unlikable character at the fore any more.

[–]batfett 6 points7 points ago

I do too. The show is doing well.

[–]SUMYD 3 points4 points ago

It's not special anymore though and the jokes have changed in a way that I can't put my finger on quite yet. It's just average good now.

Well, realistically the show 'jumped the shark' the first time (although it wasn't all that noticeable) around season 3 and 4.

It REALLY jumped the shark around when Pam got pregnant, and while they were able to milk (no pun intended) that for some excellent episodes, the jokes just started to feel forced.

Unfortunately now they're relying on some of the same old same old (everyone seems to have their "thing" like Ryan slacking, Pam the former receptionist, Erin's utter stupidity, etc) that get stressed heavily rather than new unique storylines.

That all being said, I really like Andy as the boss. It adds a sense of instability that really resonates with entire show now (in a good comedic way).

You guys ever watched the original british version? I thought that one was really good, a bit too good, reminded me of some real office situations...

[–]tfgot 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have watched a few episodes, but I found the US version more entertaining. This is probably because I watched it first, and has nothing to do with the actual quality of either version.

Poor Toby. I wasn't a big fan of the Office but every time Toby was on screen I always felt the uncontrollable urge to give him a hug. So pathetic.

It's not that the show is not funny anymore, it is.

But something feels wrong, missing. Michael had so much character, so much heart, taking him away definitely leaves a huge gap.

Also, Andy is a horrible choice to replace Michael, If anything, Robert California would have been far better.

[–]Benjigga 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they should have stuck with Creed.

[–]legendary_ironwood 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like Robert California, but I don't think that his character would work if he was around as often as Micheal was. Too much Micheal California would dull down our appreciation of him.

[–]inSTAALed 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I missed most of season 7 (currently catching up since it recently went up on Netflix). How in the world did Andy end up as the boss? His character just isn't interesting.

[–]bblemonade 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They didn't really explain it. Season 7 finale was a cliffhanger leaving you waiting to hear who's the boss, then season 8 starts and it's Andy for some reason.

[–]whitemamba83 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because he's played by Ed Helms, who's probably the most popular comedic actor left on this show after his success with The Hangover.

I'm not saying that's the only reason, but it's obviously got something to do with it. Out of everyone on the cast though, I still think he was the best choice. I don't think Darryl would've been any better. Dwight maybe.

[–]metallink11 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Andy was the safe bet for a new boss. It's basically the same dynamic with him as boss as it was with Michael which is why it seems so boring now. We've seen it all done before, but Steve Carell did it better.

[–]bulletv1 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed, should of been Dwight or Jim.

[–]matsunoki 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To each their own I guess. Andy's actually my favorite character in the show after Michael Scott. Well, andy and dwight are both second for me...

[–]inSTAALed 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dwight and Creed would probably be tied for second for me. The rest of the cast is either too rarely funny (Pam) or too bland (Kelly), in my opinion. Michael really balanced every other character out, though.

[–]Level80IRL 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well Creed is my favorite character, but I wouldn't want the entire show based around him.

[–]spammishking 17 points18 points ago

Andy isn't horrible. I thought the episode with the garden party was pretty inspired.

I still think he'll be replaced. Think of Andy as a decent temp boss.

[–]Zorbotron[!] 2 points3 points ago

Man I must be the only person that hates Robert California (well apart from my sister), seems like everyone has a lot of love for the character but I don't get it... Isn't it supposed to be a comedy? The whole "I'm so serious I might be a serial murderer" just doesn't cut it for me.

[–]Droi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not about seriousness. He is supposed to be a master of charisma, every time he starts talking the entire room quiets down and looks at him admiringly, everybody. It's pretty hilarious, but I wonder how long they can make that effect last.

[–]dboti 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they picked Andy because he is a shitty replacement but they are doing it all wrong in making him kind of run the show.

[–]afdlips 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The garden party was by far one of the worst episodes of any TV show I have ever seen. I mean, come on. Jim writes a book and gets it published just so Dwight will order and make him look like an idiot? Yeah, that would happen.

[–]eazyp 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, as much as I love the show, that episode was nothing but cripplingly bad. It really jumped the shark in the book aspect as well as the clip before the credits when Dwight just kept yelling Jim's name out.

[–]inSTAALed 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to mention it just wasn't funny.

[–]derekaa 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? I thought it was a great episode, it reminded me of the old seasons when Jim would play pranks on Dwight

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see what you meen but Jim's old pranks on dwight were actually possible. He published a full book just so Dwight would buy it, read it, and do EXACTLY what it said for one party in the near future? I miss Jim's old pranks like what he did with Andy's phone in the ceiling or when he pretended to be the self aware Dunder-Mifflin website to mess with Dwight.

[–]derekaa 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know, his old pranks were more realistic but I find it hilarious when he does things like that. It opens the door to more ideas!

When they took out Michael Scott, they killed the show; just like they did when they took out J.D. from Scrubs.

[–]The_Spice_Must_Flow 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like when Scrubs ended with season 8, it ended. I mean, the last episode of season 8 was called "my finale". Then the executives thought they could capitalize on the brand name without paying the inflated salaries of the existing cast. They tossed Braff some cash to jumpstart the series with his initial appearance, but the entire thing was different. New set, new writers, new actors. It really wasn't the same show.

[–]cupids_hitman 1 point2 points ago

Exactly! They both started within three months of each other, and then Arrested Development got cancelled after just three seasons, while Two and a Half Men is on its ninth season. The general television viewing audience has terrible taste in shows.

I find Robert California's intensity pretty entertaining. You can feel just how uncomfortable he makes everyone.

With that being said, I miss Michael Scott. I really hope we get a Scott/Flax wedding this season...

[–]whitemamba83 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But he's not funny. Michael Scott leaving left us with one less character, and Robert California replaced him (even though he didn't take over as manager). The tone of the show is just so much more different now, almost too serious, and while at times I still enjoy it, a lot of the time I'm just left scratching my head. Obviously there were serious storylines in the past as well, but Michael always made them funny or light-hearted in some way. Robert California just makes it weird and not in a funny way.

[–]baultista 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Robert California on his own isn't that funny, but I find the reaction he generates from other people to be pretty funny... from the panicking Andy doing everything to impress him to the entire office standing around in a stunned silence after his terrifying story.

Also, didn't you notice him during Erin/Andy's "talk" in their office? He sat down to eavesdrop and as soon as Erin left he decided that "Oh, it's time to go". It was a calculated move and the expression on Andy's face was pretty funny.

His character isn't Michael Scott and I'm glad that they haven't tried to make him a Michael Scott knockoff. The new season hasn't been great but it's been watchable.

[–]whitemamba83 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I wouldn't want a Michael Scott knockoff either. That would be worse. California just feels forced to me at times. I just miss the light hearted fun that Michael brought to the table. I understand what kind of humor they're trying to achieve with California, and personally I just don't always find it all that funny. I agree though this season has been watchable, and I actually really enjoyed the Halloween episode. Seems like it's gonna get better before it gets worse.

[–]radltzx 2 points3 points ago

[–]OxfordTheCat 4 points5 points ago

To be honest, I never really enjoyed The Office because of Michael Scott.

I didn't enjoy the over-the-top slapstick stupidity of the character.

I always felt that if they toned down his character the show would have hit that next level.

That being said, I'll concede that having Michael Scott is probably better than no Michael Scott.

[–]Patrick5555 1 point2 points ago
