At least Ohio is not New Mexico. What was it about our state that made it so terrible that it was the first place the world nuked when it got nukes?

I went there a couple months ago, I was surprised how nice the city was. It's not really a "big city" like Chicago (where I'm from), but it's a good sized city, extremely clean and fun to be in.

North Linden....which is supposed to be part of the ghetto. Of course, in C-Bus, that doesn't mean shit. It's quiet here and I likes it that way. In fact, my neighbors are weary of me, so I am pretty much left alone.

In order to become an astronaut, it's necessary to have a degree in some scientific/engineering discipline AND you must have research/projects to complete during the mission. You could also be one hell of a pilot - among the best our armed forces has to offer.

No astronaut wants to permanently leave the earth (as that entails death).

Ohio State offers some of the best academics in its region of the country, and Ohio University was just ranked the #1 party school in the country. Ohio is also home to some of the best high school and college athletics in the country.

The dichotomy of "Work Hard, Play Hard" is definitely alive and well in many other aspects of Ohio life as well.

BUT by far: The best thing about Ohio is the PEOPLE!

I notice these general trends AROUND the 42 degree latitude line [not considering southern states]:

  • Western US: Strangers judge you by what you do (career), and will think less of you if they view themselves to be more important. People seem to care more about themselves than others.

  • Eastern US: Strangers don't really give a fuck about you or what you do unless you have a relationship with them already. They will think low of you regardless of many factors; they will avoid interaction if possible. People tend to focus on their success before all else.

  • Midwestern US: Strangers are genuinely interested in each other, they will strike up conversations that go beyond socially-awkward small-talk like the weather. People tend to give the benefit-of-the-doubt to strangers. People tend to focus on community values and use happiness (not $) as a measure of success.

Ohio will always seem like a winner to me, I may be slightly biased because I was raised here.

Yet, I have traveled to 23 countries and more than half of the US States so it is reasonable to assume that I may have a broader perspective than the average Redditor.

Sorry that this kind of turned into a rant, but I am an Aeronautical Engineer from Cleveland so this post was like a dagger pushed deep into my heart ; )

[–]babyredpanda 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like the Midwest charm...I'd run into people from Ohio in NYC, and they'd light up and ask me all about where I was from as soon as I said I was Ohioan as well :)

And UC invented co-operative education.

[–]phreeck 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to mention we have some of the best healthcare in the nation. Healthgrades ranked Dayton having the third highest rating in excellence out of the nation.

Men's health rated Columbus the #2 most sexually satisfied city in the country. Marketwatch ranked it as the 7th best place to do business in the nation. It is the home of 5 fortune 500 companies. Businessweek ranked it the best place to raise a family in 2009.

I think people just hate Ohio because it is a subdued state. Nothing really crazy goes on here and people feel that something needs to happen to them in order for them to feel alive instead of them going out and doing something.

I've lived in Ohio all my conscious life and I love the state simply because of that. It's an affordable, generally safe and beautiful place to live. People bitch about fields and farms. Sometimes I like to see the horizon instead of some concrete block of a building.

My home town by MARK MOTHERSBAUGH—

My home town
Is the greatest in the land
The people all there
They treat you all square
And give you a place to stand

My home town
It's more than a town you know
It's my home town
It's my home town
It's Akron, Ohio!

My home town
It's a special kind of place
Hard working folks
With chips on their shoulders
People crammed in sub-human space

My home town
It's more than a town to me
It's more than plain
It's a city of pain
It's one big factory!

(Repeat Chorus)

Rock and Roll HOF, Kalahari Resort (biggest indoor waterpark in the united states), Hocking Hills, Pro Football HOF, Put in Bay island, Canada, Clevelands Theater district. Not to mention all the zoos, museums, aquariums, smaller amusements parks and the other stuff that you'll find in absolutely every other state in America. Also, not to mention all of the exceptionally well funded state parks. If you're bored in Ohio it's because you're boring and cant survive without commercialized entertainment.. in which case it's simply not for you, but that doesn't make it bad.

Every city in Ohio is just like every city anywhere else that isn't LA, New York or Miami.

Cincinnati has one of the best zoos in the nation.

So does Columbus now that I think of it.. I've only been to it for the light show though :p Doesn't the one guy there have his own show on animal planet?

[–]jschaeper 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jack Hannah. He did back in the day. One of the most famous zoologists to ever exist. And he's hilarious.

The Columbus Zoo is on a lot of people's top 5 lists of zoos in America too, so its really good.

Orville Wright was born in Ohio and he had to convince his older brother that riding or driving away just wouldn't cut it. They ended up inventing the airplane to get away from Ohio as fast as possible.

Neil Armstrong was born in Ohio. That's why it's called "one small step for man." Going to the moon just wasn't far enough away from Ohio.

Right. He looked up, and said, "Damn! I can still see Ohio from here!"

That is the highest astronaut to corn ratio of anyplace in the world.

[–]guynumberthree 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You mean lowest. We grow enough corn that the number of astronauts pales in comparison.

Ohio has its shitty moments, but it's pretty nice experiencing all four seasons in fairly equal proportions. I complain about it sometimes, but I like my home state.

I was suprised at how many black people were astronauts too. Not only that, but black astronaut women, and they're all smoking hot.

No racist.

I go to college in Florida and I laugh in the face of everyone who couldn't get out of ohio and is stuck there for the winter. I mean it's not a terrible place unless you're in the country, which makes you think you were somehow transported to backwoods Alabama, what with all the fanatic bible thumpers and love of country music.

It makes me sad too, Ohio. But I left you soon after I found out you couldn't provide for me too. It's not me, it's you. You sonofabitch.
