The hardest thing about being a parent is not laughing at inappropriate times.

[–]saxmaster 27 points28 points ago

That looked like a great time to laugh.

[–]maria340 7 points8 points ago

Hilarious. And although that kid had it coming, my cat would NEVER raise a paw against a child. Most she'd do is poop on the kid's fresh laundry. Hehe

There is a reason I like cats more than kids.

You just know a dog would sit there and take the beating in this situation, man I love dogs.

[–]WildcatBitches 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ha, actually Bloodhounds are known for being so docile toward their family that parents are warned to make sure their toddlers don't climb on the dog, yank on the dog's ears, or even poke them in the eyes because the Bloodhound will just lay there and take it. Dogs are infinitely sweeter and nicer than cats when brought up well, but in a situation like this... Cats get my vote every time.

[–]Spiro_Agnew 1 point2 points ago

Not all cats will strike back, and it's not like it's trying to kill the kid.

Kid was already crying though. I have to wonder if the cat scratched him.

[–]freemeth 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think the cat would be sitting there all calm if it had just clawed a kid to tears in front of his parents.

[–]Lampmonster1 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? My old cat used to fight me and then try to sit on my lap. Some cats truly don't give a fuck.

[–]morelikeawesome 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can vouch for that. While I was reading this thread, my cat jumped onto my keyboard, made me search google for "'1111", minimized chrome, and then shut down my computer.

[–]freemeth 0 points1 point ago

Well ya but you'd think the parent would slap it or something. I don't know.

[–]Lampmonster1 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd think. Some people think the best way for the kid to learn not to mess with the cat is to let them sort it out themselves. Like the old hot stove lesson.

[–]Space_Masters 2 points3 points ago

That is truly the only way anyone will learn anything, by making their own mistakes.

[–]NonaSuomi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe it's got something to do with the bawling bed-wetter about to feed kitty a five-finger sandwich. Cats are pretty adept at reading people.

[–]dikley 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

cat looked pre-strike angry. I have a feeling the kid was upset and did something that pissed off the cat and then hitting it was the final straw

[–]dieselmachine 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it's also the perfect age to learn that it's okay to hit something when you're mad, if that's a lesson the parents want to teach.

A parent can teach a child that "it's never okay to hit", or they can teach them "it's okay to hit in extenuating circumstances". Spanking a child is the quickest way to teach a child the latter, and then the child is left to determine whether the circumstances are "extenuating". 2 year olds also make notoriously bad decisions.

Who knows, maybe the kid is crying because a parent smacked him, and he reciprocated onto the poor family cat because he's a quick learner.

I was reminded of Odin losing an eye for gaining wisdom. Probably he had the same incident as a kid and just made up this "gained wisdom, lost eye".

[–]jgzman 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say this kid got some wisdom.

[–]nekozuki 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

LOL yeahhh probably not so much. We have worked with our 4 year old a whole lot about treating the cats gently. He still likes chasing them and will still hit them, though usually when there is some other upset going on. He's been clawed for good reason several times, and even bitten. No broken skin on bites. When he's in the heat of the moment he still doesn't remember the cats wailing on him in the past. Normal times and he does. We tell him, be gentle of she will claw you. Mostly he listens. I am guessing by age 5 this will be pretty much learned 100% as he is making good progress. Our cats still like him, mostly.

My parents had a cat that had a litter of kittens around the time I was born. When I was three, I tried to pick her up by the tail. She gave me two warnings. The third time she let me have it. I learned that tails weren't for picking up the cat.

[–]Death_To_Your_Family 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a perfect example of learning taking place. For the people freaking out about the "poor" kid for getting scratched, calm down. The cat pounced and pushed him over, he didn't slash him with his claws. He will be fine. And he will remember next time not to mess with kitty. Even if he tried to pet him initially and the cat didn't like it, tough deal. All animals are unpredictable at times and it's important that kids learn that. It keeps them from trying to make out with animals that can really do some damage.

Some of y'all need to calm down.

Save the money, then when they see the scars they remember. My former boss has a gnarly scar all the way up his hand and up most of his forearm. When he was a little kit he was ripping around on his 4 wheeler and his dad told him to stay away from the barbwire fence, well guess what happened.

His dad barely bandaged him up and let him get a wicked scar from it, seems like tough love but oh well.

Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow-creatures is amusing in itself. ~James Anthony Froude, Oceana, 1886

Typically it is a common view. Throughout life people have been quoted with similar passages regarding man and other animals and the comparisons between. More..

[–]rugby101 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1) Killing for sport is not the same thing as being malicious. 2) The best reference you could find is from 1886? 3) James Anthony Froude was not a biologist. 4) The full title of Oceana is "Oceana; England and her colonies." 5) Here is a recent article I found in 2 minutes about dolphin killing maliciously.

"Everybody says so" is not citation. lol.

what percent of children who were/are spanked believe that violence is perfectly acceptable?

[–]NonaSuomi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a kid who was "spanked in the face" multiple times, let me tell you there was a distinct difference in attitude between catching the wooden spoon across my ass and getting Dad's knuckles across my skull. I don't think it's perfectly acceptable to use violence, but given half the chance I would also love to beat my old man within an inch of his life and let him know how it feels to be completely at somebody else's mercy.

[–]yagmot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being spanked and beaten are two entirely separate issues. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I see the latter as instilling violence in a child for sure, but not a spanking.

Why bad parent? The kid just hit a fucking cat, and the kid has to learn that you don't fucking do that. And it's not like the parent was all like "Fucking claw him, cat". It reacted in about 2 seconds.

[–]CySU 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to be the voice of reason, but it looks like the kid is crying over the cat already... maybe it tried to bite back when he tried to pet the cat. As stupid as toddler are, I don't think the kid would take its anger out on the cat like that if the cat didn't already do something to provoke the kid.

[–]VotumSeparatum 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kids will do all sorts of things unprovoked. I have also personally witnessed a child younger than that smack/push an animal in response to being verbally chastised/told "no" by a parent (with the animal having nothing to do with the situation other than being within arm's reach). I have no idea what actually happened in that particular video, but it is not out of the realm of possibility that the kid was just taking out frustration on the cat. Either way he learned a valuable lesson in not fucking with animals.

[–]latticusnon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe a giant moon laser made the kid cry and controlled his brain into hitting the cat, defender of Earth from the Moon men.

[–]zomgsauce 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe the kid was doing something to provoke the cat? Violence is cyclical like that... At any rate, no lasting harm was done and the kid likely got some healthy new respect/fear for animals.

[–]ColonicIrritation 8 points9 points ago

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Without more information we cannot judge the cat or the child or really say anything about this situation. Maybe the cat was punished afterwards and the kid learned that he can fuck with the cat as much as he wants. It's a single slice of an event that we have no details on, any cheering or judging would be based on speculation.

[–]bigryanjones -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kids are stupid, so are cats, so are parents. What can be learnt from this? Stupid shit usually leads to life lessons, all around.

True story, at the time I was 3. My infant sister was crying, so my mom told me to "go play with the cats". So I did. Problem was they were about to fight a neighbor cat under my fathers car in the driveway. I tried to pull one of them out from under the car to me, and was rewarded with a lifetime scar on my left cheek from a quick swat to the face.

Reddit - where speculators come to speculate on speculation and lose the whole god damn point of everything.

Had this been a pit bull instead of a cat, people would demand the dog be shot.

You're comparing apples to oranges. That cat can't kill the kid. Sure, it could leave him with some scratches but not much more. Besides, by how agitated the cat was at the beginning of the gif, I suspect that the kid deserved it.

Fucking cat got what it deserved, being there when the kid was crying and shit. How dare he?

Cats are so big on punishment as a means of controlling behaviour.

I love how the cat waited for a second and thought about it before getting revenge.

Am I the only one that cares/realizes the kid is already bawling it's eyes out before it hits the cat? Where is the beginning of this video that gives me some context to why such a small child is giving the house cat (which is already in defensive stance) a haymaker.

i rarely downvote, but when i do, it's because fellow redditors suddenly call a little kid a brat for not knowing any better. wtf people? have none of you ever even SEEN a toddler? that's what they do. they don't know any better. neither did you when you were his age. stop the hating. yeah, the cat was in the right, and the kid learned his lesson. the gif was amusing. game over. why does everyone have to be such a dick about it? (bring on the downvotes)

The rare voice of reason appears on a Reddit thread involving (cats/women/nerd things). applauds

evidently, reason =! upvotes when it comes to those topics.

Not just these topics. Lots of topics. In this very thread you can redditors patting eachother on the back after they harassed someone for posting a contrary opinion, until he deleted his comments. And then they celebrated their douchebaggery.

You're not dealing with normal people with ethics and morals. A lot of redditors are just bad people, and there isn't anything you can really do about it because the bad people are the majority here.

I've seen this posted several times, and I always downvote reposts. But this.....this is a rare exception. My favorite part is when the kid clutches their face at the end.

I wonder if there's a way to teach redditors not to re-post just a few days after the original got on the front page.

The child looked like he had already been attacked by the cat before the gif starts. It can be argued that it was HE who was acting in self defense.

[–]Aerofluff 6 points7 points ago

If you look at the pose of the cat in the first frame, its neck is bent backwards slightly, as though the cat already encountered something that it has learned to be wary of.

My best guess is that the child did something like poke or try to grab the cat, the cat probably opened with a light swat, which made the kid cry (begin first frame of the GIF), then the kid retaliates with the punch, and gets pwned by cat.

Most cats don't begin with an all-out pounce attack like that. They typically hiss, swat rapidly, and then begin biting/kick-clawing and pouncing if you really pissed them off. Secondly, most families wouldn't keep a cat (especially in a home with a baby) if the cat initiated unprovoked hostilities upon their child at any time. In all likelihood, the child caused this incident.

"Go on, hit the cat" "I don't want to hit Mr Tiddles, I love him" "Do it or you'll never eat chocolate again" reluctantly hits cat [sound of parents laughing]
