I don't know where this picture is from, but many zoos have a holding area where the elephants are target trained to wait while the keepers distribute food and enrichment items around a huge outdoor area. The elephants will push on the door while they are waiting to go back outside, which is exactly what it looks like is going on in this picture.

Animal emotions do not read the same as people emotions. I'm not saying to that zoos with unsuitable standards don't exist, but that not every picture you see of an animal looking sad or tired in a zoo means that they are being mistreated or that area might not be their permanent enclosure.

Hmmm. Yes much of what you made makes sense. Maybe the elephant in the picture is just hungry and not seriously ill. But someone else said it on this thread, and I tend to agree (instinctively) that elephants are far too intelligent creatures to keep cooped-up. Maybe even apes and dolphins, I don't know. Logically, I would guess that animals (e.g., elephants and orang-utans) that are used to roaming over vast ranges will feel horrible ("unnatural," if you don't want to ascribe them emotions) in a small, enclosed space, no matter how different their emotions "read."

By the way:

Animal emotions do not read the same as people emotions.

Just to make sure, did you mean animals express their emotions differently or that they don't feel all of the emotions we do (or maybe to a lesser extent)? Either way, I find this a remarkably arrogant statement (not that you meant it that way, just in general as a viewpoint to take). How do we judge how an animal feels? What yardstick do we have to measure their suffering or to guess their perspective? If we use behavior to guess the emotions of animals, we of course have to anthropomorphize the behavior. The thing is, this may not work out well for most animals (except perhaps, apes - and monkeys? - whom we are closest to) -- even higher mammals, let alone birds and reptiles. For instance, I remember this study of cows in abattoirs, waiting in queues to be slaughtered, that balked at small objects like cans that had been left lying in their path inadvertently. Those were objects that all of us would have subconsciously ignored and they terrified them. It took an autistic human being to point this out to us. Anyway... the point I'm making is that we human beings, as creatures that are too unaware even of our own condition and behavior, must not go around judging other creatures and assume that we understand them accurately.

Just to be clear: I was not claiming that animals don't have emotions, quite the opposite. That was in regard to all the comments regarding how sad/depressed the elephant "looked" when we can't really compare facial/posture expressions to those of a human. There are a number of factors that could be involved in the way that elephant looks, perhaps the elephant was hot, tired, or maybe the picture was just taken at a particular moment that made the elephant "look" depressed by human standards. My comment is really a devil's advocate to all the dozens of comments I saw claiming how animals should never be kept in zoos, etc.

Idk, I coincidentally just had a long conversation on elephants, their intelligence, and sentience. I've always had a love for those guys in particular. They're so noble so I can relate.
