Who the hell eats a raw stick of butter? You're supposed to deep fry it first.

Actually its the whole grains and veggie oil industry that is bullshit.

This poster speaks the truth...saturated fat will raise your HDL and does not lead to heart disease. The "Heart Healthy" soy/corn oil on the other hand...

I've recently finished "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes, and as a result I'm about to embark on a ketosis diet for health reasons (I need to lose a few lbs but am not clinically obese). In addition to the carb info, this book gave me the scientific basis to embrace the idea that natural (animal) fat is good, and processed (corn/soy) fat is bad, contrary to contemporary medical opinion.

See /r/keto for more info.

high five, welcome to the enlightened club. Here's your complimentary stick of grass-fed butter.

I think the folks in Keto should pay a bit more attention to the quality of fats they eat (i.e. less polyunsaturated). Otherwise best of luck, it worked for me!

That seems to be a controversy, not a "fact" as it's spouted on Reddit often. Seeing as I'm not a nutritionist, I think I'll stick with the scientific consensus for now.

I've heard of it before. They spout some sensible stuff, but many of the claims are highly unsubstantiated. I generally get skeptical with these types of "fad diets", and I see this as no different.

Well, paleo is a “diet” we all used to have before Nixon decided he needed to stabilize food price and pushed on eliminating fat from nutrition and replacing it with carbs. That’s when so called civilization’s diseases sprouted.

And if you don’t want to associate yourself with any diet camp, just eat stuff from good sources, avoid processed food like mad and limit your sugar intake to fruit (no juice, no soda, no candy). So a nice meal of mashed potatos, chicken wings (no sugary sauce!) and a salad (no sugary topping!) is something we all can get behind.

[–]JakalDX 4 points5 points ago

That's the problem. There isn't really a consensus because there's a lot of data that's ignored. Those who go against the lipid hypothesis are usually chastised and blacklisted. Is this how science is typically done?

[–]gay_liberal_atheist -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So there is a conspiracy to silence people who oppose "mainstream" science? This sounds very familiar.

[–]JakalDX 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't go so far as to say there's a conspiracy, but it seems like anybody who speaks out against it is treated like a crackpot. Why are there instances of people who have diets high in saturated fat but show improved HDL cholesterol if it's so straightforward?

Here is more information on the subject.

Subsequent and independent analysis of the data that were available to Keys shows that he "cherry picked" only those countries with numbers that supported his hypothesis and omitted a significant amount of data that showed there was actually no correlation between dietary fat, cholesterol, and arteriosclerosis. But this information has been largely ignored.

Part of this can be explained by powerful industry groups with a vested interest in having his theory accepted as fact. Part of it can also be attributed to Keys’ strong and persuasive personality.

Eh, nutrition is such a difficult subject. Everyone has their own ideas about what's best. Personally, I think moderation is the key. I agree with some of the ideas with the paleo diet; however, some of the claims about grains, legumes, etc. seem to be a bit cooky. Many assumptions about our diet are made that simply don't seem to be based on evidence (that we never ate grains for instance). Overall, it's fine, but when you remove the extreme parts of it, it's not really much different than any standard recommended healthy diet. I don't think saturated fat is bad like trans fat is bad, but too much of it, like most things, can lead to problems.

[–]JakalDX 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We basically agree on this. However, what most people don't seem to realize is that carbs are basically sugar. Nobody would say a healthy diet should be rich in sugar, yet some people eat multiple servings of grains every day, which spikes their blood sugar. I think carbs should be strictly monitored, though not necessarily cut completely. I also agree that moderation is key to a healthy diet. I disagree with the supposition that saturated fat is inherently bad, especially since the science is pretty murky.

[–]gay_liberal_atheist -1 points0 points ago

Yes, sugar and refined grains are clearly top of the list for a lot of the issues we face. They're empty calories. Whole grains in moderation, however, are fine in my opinion.

While it's not good for you in large quantities (like anything really) - butter is generally a lot healthier for you than substitutes like margarine.

[–]DoobleRose 0 points1 point ago

It seems like each week we receive an important notice about our health that contradicts what we've long been taught about the things we eat. One week butter is bad for you, the next it's good. When I first wrote an article on this chain letter back in 2003, I had no idea how long-lived it would be or how heated the debate would get. The Butter Battle wages on...

[–]-Slade- 2 points3 points ago

Also since butter is smooth and slippery, it leaves a slippery trail behind after you eat it so that other food you stuff into your food hole slides in much easier, this is why butter is awesome!

Years and years ago, my Grandfather, who was a doctor, told my Grand-Aunt that she needed to cut out the butter and sour cream from her diet. She said she needed them because they lubricated her arteries.

He lived to be 92, she lived to 96. Go figure.

Interestingly enough, the counterpoint is just as poignant.

If anything that could clog a drain could clog arteries, ice cream would be safe and carrots would be deadly.
