So I am not the only one who gets them! Yippee!

Why is there always someone surprised by this whenever the topic comes up?

[–]Sir_WemyssSpace is deep 8 points9 points ago

Because it isn't something you would talk about, I guess.

[–]RedHotBeef 10 points11 points ago

But did you truthfully assume that you were the only one for which this occurs?

[–]Sir_WemyssSpace is deep 12 points13 points ago

Yup. I thought they were microorganisms or something.

The reddit in me wants to be mean.

The trees in me say "That's cool, friend."

lol this is a strange halfway zone between trees and the cold harsh world that is reddit....

[–]JudoTrip 1 point2 points ago

The halfway zone, surprisingly, is /r/DBZ. Weird right?

Dude I totally thought they were microogranisms too!

I thought I was the only one who could see them...

[–]s3rris 3 points4 points ago

if you see them a lot definitely see an eye doctor about it. it can mean your eyes are messed up, like you have glaucoma or could get cataracts in the future.

Cataracts run through my family :S

DAE see tiny little floating specs when looking at a bright sky? It's different from these things. More like dust particles reflecting sunlight, but they don't seem to move with the wind. I've been wondering about this for years.

[–]lazyslacker 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Everyone in the world gets them. It's called the blue field phenomenon. The effect is due to the white blood cells travelling through the capillaries in your retinas. They can't absorb light as well as your red blood cells do, so they reflect more light which is then picked up by your eye's light receptors. Therefore, when you experience the blue field effect, you're looking at your own white blood cells as they travel through your eyes.

Wow - mystery solved! Leave it to science to smash and pummel any illusions I had about seeing the "magical pixie dust of the Universe"... LOL

I think it can still be both.

The scientific explanation may be less mystical, but it's more interesting to me :)

[–]ThatsSciencetastic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fascinating, thanks for the explanation man. Got any more eye related insights?

Whats up with the color/patterns I see after a few seconds of lightly pressing on my eyelids?

[–]JudoTrip 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that's a special voodoo spell.

[–]bigavz 0 points1 point ago

If you are very nearsighted, and see a lot of these floaters, that means your retina may be ruptured and you need to see an ophthalmologist.

[–]ireedwutic 0 points1 point ago

thats amazing you should bring this up, because as a kid i imagined that since the eye is a lens, they're possibly enlarging microscopic entities, and in looking into a clear blue sky, those little ''floaters'' could actually be things too small for regular vision to see; cells and such. i never bothered to look it up, eventually assuming it was just specs of dust, but now to hear that my initial assumption was correct, i am actually a bit proud of myself to have come to such a conclusion independently, and as a kid at that. thanks lazyslacker

touch your artery in your neck, do they move with your heartbeat? It's probably blood cells moving inside the blood vessels in the back of your eye, you can see them in bright conditions

Edit: beaten by quick draw-mcgraw here

Yeah i actually think your referring to this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_snow

[–]calendula 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The blue field phenomenon referred to by lazyslacker is more accurate to what I'm seeing; I see it only when looking at a clear, blue sky. This visual snow thing would be terrifying!

[–]LlammaPandaCat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have it, this quote pertains to me.

"Another suggestion is that visual snow is in fact always there, and it is not until adrenaline levels are raised that people begin to notice it. People who suffer from Anxiety disorders such as GAD (generalised anxiety disorder) often mistake "symptoms" such as visual snow and other natural/normal physiological phenomenons (blue field entoptic phenomenon, floaters, halos, light trails) to be life threatening, when in actual fact they have just not noticed them before."

I'm no scientist but i'm pretty sure their just dust particles getting on your eyes. Anyways, blinking gets rid of em.

[–]carloscarllos 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not dust particles that's for sure and I can guarantee you blinking won't do shit since I've tried that before.

[–]ColdJello 5 points6 points ago

Oh ok, anytime i get them i just blink. Sorry to anger you so much.

This is the happiest day of my life. I looked at a floater and it didn't run away!

You know when you notice something moving at the corner of you eye (woo what was that!?) and turn your head but to see nothing. You think you saw something and think that you hallucinated something moving. Then now I only understand that it were these fucking things.

[–]DukeMikeofG 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always had a hard time describing this to people who don't immediately understand the term 'eye floaters' - best I can do is describe them as what glass spaghetti underwater would appear like, but that doesn't seem to help much either.

Thank god I thought there were tiny microscopic parasites in my eyes. Thanks for clearing that up man.
