I fucking hate those! For years I thought I was mad because I saw them all the time, and was afraid to ask if anyone saw them too...

They're incredibly annoying. But not a life deal-breaker.

I don't think I've ever seen a floater. Someone explain to me what I might be missing?

[–]skaijo 27 points28 points ago

They're basically Mushi. Less than animals or even spirits. You'll need to speak with a trained mushishi to really understand them.

or just go bass to mouth enough times.

It is a very small piece of debris floating around inside your eyeball. Most people only see them from time to time when looking at something flat and light colored (staring at a white wall for example.) However, if you see them all the time, it can be a sign of something seriously wrong with your eye (retinal tearing for example.)

I block them out always but if I actually want to see them it isn't difficult. All I need to do is stare at something white/bright(i.e., sky) and I'll see them pretty much all the time.

I was afraid of asking people too. Then I saw a episode of Family Guy and that ended my fear.

I like to make them jump on a clear day. They love dancing!

Yeah, I've never had them nearly as static as the gif shows.

Personally I think that's fucking brilliant.

Bravo OP

I have a bunch of them. Took a nasty hit to the head playing basketball, doctor said that the eye/brain will eventually cancel them out and I won't see them anymore. It's been 5 years and they are mostly gone but this gif really nails it. Awesome

I got something similar as a kid when i was pitching and my buddy hit a line drive back at my face hitting me in the eye and blinding me temporarily Floaters got better after a while but necer went away

You probably suffered a small retinal tear, if it gets worse in the future, go see an optometrist.

[–]wideiris 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

an optometrist told me that. but thanks. i think i led you astray by calling my optometrist a 'doctor'.

[–]ponyrides 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ahh yes. Plus, my optometrist has me all paranoid about the possibility of my tear getting worse in the future. Therefore I am all "the sky is falling" about it.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

If memory serves, they can also be caused by the remnants of an artery necessary as your eye formed, but not needed after formation. So they wither and die and float around in the vitreous humor.

The one in my left eye is a dead sperm.

[–]lnicoll100 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

haha they're called 'floater' even on wikipedia. turns out they're sorta like malfunctions in the front of your eye, and the older you are the more you get them!

[–]Tasboo 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, if you start to see a bunch of them all of a sudden, get to the doctor.

[–]Xphex 22 points23 points ago

Because you will have eyeball maggots.

[–]nitefang 4 points5 points ago

Oh squiggly line in my eye fluid.

I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision.

But when I try to look at you, you scurry away.

Are you shy, squiggly line?

Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye?

Oh, squiggly line,

it's alright, you are forgiven.

Close your eyes and look left to right, up to down several times really quickly. If they don't go away completely, they're at least in a different place now.

[–]Biancabean 3 points4 points ago

I used to get them a lot more when I wore contacts, after I had lasik it seems to happen less frequent. I wrote it off as dirty contacts or just needing drops in my eyes

At least yours aren't black coloured. I have one that looks like a fruit fly is always in my face. The clear ones everyone has.

[–]cmarro913 0 points1 point ago

Floaters can be a sign of retinal detachment. But usually they're just nothing. There is no cure. You live with this bullshit forever.

Got these when some kid decided instead of taking the basketball from my hands he would shove his finger in my eye -__-. Any of you guys have stories of them going away? I got used to them but still, i would like to appreciate the scenery without seeing these fuckers once in awhile

[–]Spartanrme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Always good to know I'm not the only one. As a kid I thought seeing them was normal. It was only years later I found out that it's an actual condition.

I also thought they were animals that flew about the sky (since I never noticed them elsewhere), and only I could see them...

Ah, childhood...

[–]Bomberman334 0 points1 point ago

So wait are they actually in the GIF or is it just supposed to show that you have them? Stupid question I know but still...

I have had one in my eyes since I could remember. I gave him the name "squidflash" when I was still super young and my parents called him my imaginary friend. I have never stopped seeing 'him' either, even now. It's cool though, he's my lil' buddy.

[–]shrillingchicken -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always thought they're tiny lint that landed on your eye from the air. The eye surface is wet, which causes dust and lint to 'float' down towards the eye lid. Of course right on your eye the lint is magnified but out of focus, and this is the effect you see. Right?
