Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

When I first noticed floaters when I was a kid I thought I had giant bacteria living in my eyeballs.

For years I thought I could actually see the dead blood cells floating around in my Vitreous humour.

[–]Shazam_Bitches 16 points17 points ago

It's even crazier when you have a post vitreous detachment in one of your eyes. You get this lovely flash that whips around your peripheral vision. o_ o

[–]cynthiadangus 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a real thing, which I have. It gets especially bad if it's bright out, I can see the blood cells groovin' around in my eye. I also have flashers, floaters, astigmatism and palinopsia. Yay for fucked up eyes.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I dunno what names they have but I can see chains of dotty things floating around in my eyes. There goes one right now...

Yay!

[–]crepitus 8 points9 points ago

They really are called floaters.

[–]FlocksOfGeese 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you. I just solved a life long mystery. I've had symptoms of palinopsia ever since I can remember, but always thought I was just being silly and decided to never talk to anyone about it. I came to this comment thread hoping that maybe someone had similar symptoms to mine, and sure enough, I looked up every word that didn't seem familiar to me and came across this. Looked up Palinopsia, and all of my problems are identified.

[–]cynthiadangus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No problem! Well.. I mean, there still are problems, we just know what they are now. The palinopsia for me began last winter for some reason. My eyes hurt like hell for about 2 weeks, which was rife with an influx of floaters, flashers, and seeing the blood cells in my eyes. I had a good old fashioned freakout for a good month after that, that I was going blind or had a tumor or something. I had a full optical exam, but nothing was out of the ordinary. The Doctor said the problem was neurological, but nothing to be worried about.

Palinopsia was admittedly a self-diagnosis, but I have all the necessary symptoms, so I assume that's what it is. It'd be like having a runny nose, chills and a plugged ear and then trying to convince myself I didn't have a cold.

So I guess unless this shit clears up on its own, reading white-text-on-black-background will suck, and we'll have to continue to look away every time a car goes by at night, so we're not seeing the headlights for like, 20 seconds afterwards.

Haha me too! Had this huge shouting match with me dad (8yrs old) about weather or not I have microscopic eye power. He just said "ok ok Ian you can see germs"

That reminds me of this :/

EDIT:

I'm an eye doc. It's called a vitreous detachment. The vitreous is the jelly that fills up the eye. It breaks down in all of us. Like holding your hand between a flashlight and a wall, your hand casts a shadow. So too does the little chunk of jelly floating around. Stop looking for it. It won't go away (exercise? diet? sorry-lies), but your brain will suppress it. I see mine with white walls/blue skies, etc. FYI-new floaters, flashes of light, curtain in vision, you must immediately be seen to rule out a retinal tear or detachment! Hope this helped - Credit goes to dahuii22.

[–]sarcastic_bastard 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Optometrist here, retinal detachment makes you see sudden flashes of light, quite like thunderbolts. That can lead to permanent loss of vision so its a SUPER EMERGENCY where you have to go to the hospital immediately and have laser thermo coagulation or whatsit-called in goddamn English. Floaters are usually harmless and they do not indicate liquidation of the vitreous body.

PS : I am not really sure i used the correct medical terms since I studied optometry in greece and had to use google translate to find the corresponding english terms, so there.

[–]underattack86 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Suddenly scouring my memory to see if I've ever seen "sudden flashes of light", just in case I'm on the verge of permanent vision loss.

[–]sarcastic_bastard 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

nah, you d be half blind by now. Its like scouring your memory to see if you ve ever felt pain on your leg, in case it is broken now.

[–]marshall007 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, this has happened to me at least three times, but only when my eyes are closed. Is this something I need to worry about?

[–]autocannibal 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the retina in my right eye was detached in an accident when I was a kid. (industrial sprinkler system in the eye @ point blank range). I was young so I dont know exactly what procedure I had, but the eye was lazy for a few months after the surgery and I am VERY nearsighted in it now (which is awesome because my left eye is farsighted so if someone puts on my prescription glasses by accident their head explodes). More to the point, I get a lot of "floaters", and other fun effects in my vision and the doc told me all those years ago that I would be needing cataract surgery at some point in my life.

[–]sarcastic_bastard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, new floaters tend to appear after trauma. About that cataract surgery : I am not 100% sure, but I believe that traumatic cataract appears almost right after the accident in most cases. Then again I suppose it makes sense that an injured eye is more prone to develop cataract earlier than normal (most people over the age of 60 have developed cataract although most not so severe as to require surgery)

[–]zamadatix 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is there any special thing going on if the "floater" is always in the same spot of the same eye? I noticed one for the first time 2 years back but I have only seen the same one in the same place since (if I notice it at all).

[–]sarcastic_bastard 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am not sure about the proper English medical term but floaters are usually thickened parts of the vitreous body which are harmless. Liquidation of the vitreous body on the other hand is a tad more serious and should be examined by an ophthalmologist. Then again what you describe hardly passes for a floater , since it doesn't float! Maybe you should see an eye doctor for that, besides everyone should go at least once a year for a check out, if only to measure their ocular pressure. I am sure its nothing but then again i cannot make a diagnosis on the internet. :)

[–]Kowai03 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also sudden increase in the number of floaters can be a symptom of imminent retinal detachment can't it? I am at risk of retinal detachment even though I'm young and my optometrist was worried when I suddenly got a bazillion floaters in my vision. My eyes are currently fine thankfully though I have them tested every year.

[–]jcs1 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having just a few floaters like this is normal; it is not a vitreous detachment.

[–]j1ggy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is normal to have floaters with a somewhat darker appearance? I've had one in my left eye for years, can be annoying when it's light out. It has a browish tinge to it and moves around. It has an annoying habit of getting right in the center of my field of vision, especially when I'm reading.

[–]leaptheman 3 points4 points ago

Yep, I have those. But add in a couple dark spots floating around too. Just to complete the set. It sucks, especially for golfing. I consistently lose track of the ball since the minute I search for it in the sky, there are several objects just floating around wherever I look. My friends get frustrated when I inevitably say "no idea where my ball went".

[–]korri 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should get that checked out by an eye doctor if you haven't already, dark spots and frequent floaters is a symptom of something bad with your retina (its not detachment, but like partial detatchment, I for get whats its called...). I've had a few dark spots and a bunch of floaters and got yelled at for not telling the doctor. The eye doctor can just dilate your pupils and check the retina just to be sure its not serious.

Hahaha, these floaters are starting to sound more and more like forbidden knowledge or something

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

They're pretty common. Pretty much all people have them to some degree, you've just never stared at a clear sky long enough to catch your probably very-minor case. Something like 1/3 of people have them noticeable when not looking at the sky.

[–]butyourenice 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i just spend 10 minutes staring at my ceiling and didn't see even one. maybe some people are just not as susceptible to... vitreous degeneration or what it's called.

when i look at the sky and it is bright out, i do see what look like tiny electric gnats flying around (can't explain it very well, sorry). i think it may be this phenomenon mentioned in another thread.

This is floaters, and this is not what I have at all. Everytime I tell an eye doctor or other doctor my problem, they say it's floaters. What I see is PATTERNS, like if you hold up a kaleidoscope, When I look at the sky or at bright things, like snow on a sunny day, or a white house on a sunny day, I see distinct sworly patterns like this but not in color, just in light and darkish hues of blue or white/gray

[–]PemCorgiSelphie 0 points1 point ago

This also happens if I rub my eyes a little bit or stare at a wall for a little while.

[–]BisforBM 0 points1 point ago

This happens to me if I'm exercising. I think it has something to do with the blood flow. Sometimes it's like a pulsing shadow, and sometimes it looks like dark objects shooting off from my peripheral vision towards the centre. They get smaller as they go though, which gives the illusion of them shooting past me down a tunnel or something.

Is that like what you have?

Is this a very common thing? I have one in the lower left of my vision. I don't really notice it unless it's rather bright, and I'm looking at a light colored surface.

Mine were more thread-like than worm-like but yep, that's close enough. Haven't seen 'em for a few years. Don't miss 'em. Although for a while one was basically dead center on the right eye and I pretended it was a targeting site.

As a kid who loved Ocarina Of Time, I thought they were spirits, like you see in Kokiri Forest. I honestly thought everyone saw them.

I always thought floaters were dust particles that landed on the surface of your eye which caused me to wash my eyes in the shower. It wasn't until I needed retinal re-attachment surgery that I learned what they really were.

I have these. But really bad. They cover my eyesight. I was diagnosed with ocular histoplasmosis. I was told that it could be caused from being around rivers and or bat guano in the midwest. That I actually have a fungus in my eyes. I grew up in Kansas and use to play in caves that had bats, and the cave happened to be close to a river. Sometimes I get blind spots, but they go away after a month or so. I'm only 34. Hoping I won't be blind by 40. Check this out http://www.stlukeseye.com/conditions/histoplasmosis.html

I heard of a surgery where they replace the vitreous humour of the eye with a different, but similar substance in order to get rid of obstructive particulates in the eye fluid.

Maybe you should ask about that.

[–]cabbeer 1 point2 points ago

I know someone who thinks floaters are cells (molecules) and that they can see them with their eye. They're in university (third year) for nursing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What is this supposed to be?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're floaters; flaws in the vitreous humour, or debris in the jelly of the eye, that cause people to see exactly what you see inthis picture when looking at the sky, or other blocks of solid colour. Many people have them. Mine are almost intolerable.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Ugh these things are annoying. I also get dark spots in my vision (like one in my left eye just left to my central vision) that are always there but fade unless I'm really tired and then come back full force.

I honestly thought, it was specks of dust and i was seeing light bend around it (like the double slit experiment). I would often give it as an example. I was so wrong.

Nicely done. I'm fascinated with the way light travels through our eyes. I've tried to reproduce some of the effects we see through our eyes when we squint. Some samples here: http://utamoh.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/with-eyes-almost-closed/ P.S. Am I allowed to link to my own work?
