Error (509) This account's public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled!

Why do people feel compelled to post images to sites with restricted/limited bandwidth? Just post it to imgur and stop trying to be such a damn hipster.

Well, dropbox is amazing for personal uploads and easy file sharing, but it is not meant to be a mass public host.

Bottom-left for details of what everything means

This site is good for getting quotes http://www.biblegateway.com/

I checked 311: Is God warlike or peaceful?

Exodus 15:3 The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name.

Romans 15:33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Well, this chart seems legit. Thanks to all who made it

The paragraph at the bottom says:

The Bars represent all of the chapters and the length of how many verses. White bars are the Old Testament and Grey bars are the New Testament.

So your saying that 66 different books, written over a period of thousands of years, by different authors in different countries, speaking different languages and practising different religions don't necessarily agree with each other?

[–]super__mario 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This would be more useful in textual format.

How do you get from one example the person you linked to quoted to many?

[–]zinc55 -1 points0 points ago

If you got through and pick any at random, many are incorrect.

Let's check...

  1. Is it OK to curse people? rom 12:14, 1cor 16:22

First one:

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Second:

If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!

Now let's go to the original Greek for the two words:

εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς διώκοντας [ὑμᾶς], εὐλογεῖτε καὶ μὴ καταρᾶσθε.

καταράομαι,v {kat-ar-ah'-om-ahee} 1) to curse, doom, imprecate evil upon

(I assume that's the same root as catarrh, a cold)

Second:

εἴ τις οὐ φιλεῖ τὸν κύριον, ἤτω ἀνάθεμα. Μαρανα θα.

Anathema - ἀνάθεμα,n {an-ath'-em-ah} 1) a thing set up or laid by in order to be kept 1a) specifically, an offering resulting from a vow, which after being consecrated to a god was hung upon the walls or columns of the temple, or put in some other conspicuous place 2) a thing devoted to God without hope of being redeemed, and if an animal, to be slain; therefore a person or thing doomed to destruction 2a) a curse 2b) a man accursed, devoted to the direst of woes

So yeah, totally different terms that have been rendered as curse in English.

[–]zinc55 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point of that is the English translation is shit, but many use it.

[–]Dhghomon 1 point2 points ago

The point of that is the English translation is shit, but many use it.

The point is that people use that shit English translation to find contradictions in a book that wasn't written in English.

So...I'm not allowed to say "Oh hey, look at this fallacy!" because your sacred word hasn't been translated properly, but Christians are allowed to harass me about how I'll burn in Hell based solely on the exact same, poorly translated book just because I don't love the correct gender?

Anyone is allowed to point out inaccuracies in translation. Not sure how you got into the subject of 'my sacred word' and loving one gender or another from that.

[–]joanatha -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Your sacred word" = The Christian Bible (I just assumed from the tone of your post that you adhere to Christianity) I got on the topic of my homosexuality because it's one of most theists' favorite things to bash using The Bible.

Your post that I replied to implied that people shouldn't point out fallacies in the translation of The Bible simply because it has been translated. Of course, I could have very well misinterpreted what you were trying to say, but regardless, the wording was poor (or more so, the point of your post wasn't clear).

[–]_Ames_ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then why is it called the "word of the lord" if its not really...right?

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be more like the word of the lord after a game of telephone.

[–]zinc55 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Also finding contradictions in a book written by over 200 people over a few hundred (thousand?) years.

[–]wronghead 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say a more salient point is that the book has been written and re-written so many times that, as Bart Ehrman put it--It "has more errors than words!"

It has been so subject to human speculations, revisions, mistakes and outright fabrications for so many years that even if we were to accept that when it was written it was the word of God, to assume the same thing now would be asinine.

Else, we could just as well assume that modern translations are the word of God and the older fragments are all in error, and it would make just as much sense: that is to say none.

[–]wronghead 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which English translation are you referring to? There are several. The King James is probably the most widely accepted bible on the planet earth. If you believe the book is in error and think that it is worthless as a doctrinal manuscript, you are wasting your time in the wrong forum. There is a whole world of Christians out there that think that everything in that book is true. We, on the other hand, think it's crazy already.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

"Many"? Or do you mean the "majority"? 10 in itself is "many" - but not in relation to over 400.

Explain

[–]Nerd_Grenade[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uh the Bible is ridiculous because the amount of contradictions within it make it a pretty horrible guide to daily life.

[–]ShadedPhoenix 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry I meant the picture. How is it listed? Mainly wtf is all the red lines for?

[–]HowYaGuysDoin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The red lines link one contradiction to another. The histogram (white bar thingies) represent the number of total contradictions with that given verse, since it is hard to count how many lines lead to one.

Nothing funner then being ambiguous when asking someone else to clarify. :)
