Error (509) This account's public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled!
[–]Retractable 9 points10 points11 points 10 months ago
Why do people feel compelled to post images to sites with restricted/limited bandwidth? Just post it to imgur and stop trying to be such a damn hipster.
[–]Thorbinator 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Well, dropbox is amazing for personal uploads and easy file sharing, but it is not meant to be a mass public host.
[–]eljuanyo 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
I thought that was the "joke".... bible's contradictions? too much traffic there man xD
[–]swilson154 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I was looking at it to make sure there were no subtle jokes that I just wasn't seeing.
[–]Nerd_Grenade[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Woops, I found it on a blog thats why its not on imgur.

I checked 311: Is God warlike or peaceful?
Exodus 15:3 The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name.
Romans 15:33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Well, this chart seems legit. Thanks to all who made it

Thanks. The link to the PDF is most useful. Now I can quickly search, cut, copy paste from it :D.

So your saying that 66 different books, written over a period of thousands of years, by different authors in different countries, speaking different languages and practising different religions don't necessarily agree with each other?
[–]super__mario 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
This would be more useful in textual format.

Wrong. Many of these examples aren't right. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/l7fxn/homosexuals_of_reddit_i_have_some_questions_for/c2qfzal
[–]nucking 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
How do you get from one example the person you linked to quoted to many?
[–]zinc55 -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
If you got through and pick any at random, many are incorrect.
[–]Dhghomon 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
Let's check...
First one:
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Second:
If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!
Now let's go to the original Greek for the two words:
εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς διώκοντας [ὑμᾶς], εὐλογεῖτε καὶ μὴ καταρᾶσθε.
καταράομαι,v {kat-ar-ah'-om-ahee} 1) to curse, doom, imprecate evil upon
(I assume that's the same root as catarrh, a cold)
εἴ τις οὐ φιλεῖ τὸν κύριον, ἤτω ἀνάθεμα. Μαρανα θα.
Anathema - ἀνάθεμα,n {an-ath'-em-ah} 1) a thing set up or laid by in order to be kept 1a) specifically, an offering resulting from a vow, which after being consecrated to a god was hung upon the walls or columns of the temple, or put in some other conspicuous place 2) a thing devoted to God without hope of being redeemed, and if an animal, to be slain; therefore a person or thing doomed to destruction 2a) a curse 2b) a man accursed, devoted to the direst of woes
So yeah, totally different terms that have been rendered as curse in English.
[–]zinc55 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
The point of that is the English translation is shit, but many use it.
[–]Dhghomon 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
The point is that people use that shit English translation to find contradictions in a book that wasn't written in English.
[–]joanatha 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
So...I'm not allowed to say "Oh hey, look at this fallacy!" because your sacred word hasn't been translated properly, but Christians are allowed to harass me about how I'll burn in Hell based solely on the exact same, poorly translated book just because I don't love the correct gender?
Anyone is allowed to point out inaccuracies in translation. Not sure how you got into the subject of 'my sacred word' and loving one gender or another from that.
[–]joanatha -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
"Your sacred word" = The Christian Bible (I just assumed from the tone of your post that you adhere to Christianity) I got on the topic of my homosexuality because it's one of most theists' favorite things to bash using The Bible.
Your post that I replied to implied that people shouldn't point out fallacies in the translation of The Bible simply because it has been translated. Of course, I could have very well misinterpreted what you were trying to say, but regardless, the wording was poor (or more so, the point of your post wasn't clear).
[–]_Ames_ 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Then why is it called the "word of the lord" if its not really...right?
[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
It would be more like the word of the lord after a game of telephone.
[–]zinc55 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Exactly. Also finding contradictions in a book written by over 200 people over a few hundred (thousand?) years.
I'd say a more salient point is that the book has been written and re-written so many times that, as Bart Ehrman put it--It "has more errors than words!"
It has been so subject to human speculations, revisions, mistakes and outright fabrications for so many years that even if we were to accept that when it was written it was the word of God, to assume the same thing now would be asinine.
Else, we could just as well assume that modern translations are the word of God and the older fragments are all in error, and it would make just as much sense: that is to say none.
Which English translation are you referring to? There are several. The King James is probably the most widely accepted bible on the planet earth. If you believe the book is in error and think that it is worthless as a doctrinal manuscript, you are wasting your time in the wrong forum. There is a whole world of Christians out there that think that everything in that book is true. We, on the other hand, think it's crazy already.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
"Many"? Or do you mean the "majority"? 10 in itself is "many" - but not in relation to over 400.
A majority.
[–]potatoaster 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Again?
[–]apeman5291 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
What are the lines underneath the red arcs supposed to be?

I want this as a poster in my room, can anyone help me?
[–]ShadedPhoenix 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Explain
[–]Nerd_Grenade[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Uh the Bible is ridiculous because the amount of contradictions within it make it a pretty horrible guide to daily life.
[–]ShadedPhoenix 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Sorry I meant the picture. How is it listed? Mainly wtf is all the red lines for?
[–]HowYaGuysDoin 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
The red lines link one contradiction to another. The histogram (white bar thingies) represent the number of total contradictions with that given verse, since it is hard to count how many lines lead to one.
[–]iMarmalade 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Nothing funner then being ambiguous when asking someone else to clarify. :)
[–]Flavor_of_the_Month 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Isn't it obvious?
[–]akoaaron 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
They are a visual representation of the contradictions.

So, I'm not really sure why I'm on r/Atheism, feeling the need to respond to this, I'm not even really that outwardly religious. I don't do this. But seriously r/Atheism? Seriously?
A barely cursory review of this list o "contradictions" has things like #36: Should you answer a fool according to his folly? Proverbs 26:4 != 26:5 when proverbs 26:4-5 read (I have a bible right in front of me) "4 : Don't make a for of yourself by answering a fool. 5 : But, if you answer any fool, show how foolish they are so they won't feel smart. Go check, unless you've already ran out of toilet paper.
That is not a contradiction. That is not even close. Half this shit is: "how many children did Asaiah have? This one part say 560, this other says 561, LOLOLOLOL God does not exist" Honest question, "Who fucking cares?" Not me. Does the Bible have contradictions, sure, but if you're going to point them out, at least point out ones that matter, don't fluff with bullshit, and stop circle jerking.
Sorry if that was a bit harsh.
edit, you can down vote all you want, #36 is not a contradiction and you can't down vote reality. Sorry.
[–]prattja8 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
Half this shit is: "how many children did Asaiah have? This one part say 560, this other says 561
If the bible were inspired by god these inconsistencies wouldn't exist. Unless he was malevolently trying to deceive people into not worshiping him. Regardless, I think it goes without saying that we are all more concerned with the obvious bullshit in the bible like the age of the earth, literal accounts of creation, and the unethical mandates therein but the point still exists that the bible is rife with contradiction.
[–]izagig -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 months ago
Believing the Bible was divinely inspired doesn't necessarily mean it can't be inconsistent. People can add things, or take them away or whatever, after the fact. I would argue they did. The Bible itself points out, in my favorite quote JER 8:8 that people change the Bible and their interpretation thereof in "falsehoods."
[–]prattja8 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
Believing the Bible was divinely inspired doesn't necessarily mean it can't be inconsistent.
I guess your god is not perfect then, in which case I see no reason to worship him.
[–]JakalDX 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
So how can you determine what is "true"?
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
I guess a 'holy book' riddled with small inconsistencies just ticks people off.
[–]tkagotquants 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago*
It wasn't just harsh, it was outright idiotic and prejudiced. You think we just take the Bible apart because it is
FUN OLOLOL.
No - the Bible is full of contradictions, which means it was written by people of that time who lacked any decent moral boundaries, knowledge of science and just a rational way of thought.
Those who decide to follow said book are seen as dim and weak-minded people. We describe what is exactly wrong in the Bible and this example was just perfect because it's not a fucking facebook quote - it's gathered data from the original source. If you find that offensive and nonsensical then kindly piss off, this post is one of the few on /r/atheism that concisely and neatly presented the fallacy of the Bible.
[–]izagig -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
I don't think you take the Bible apart because it's it's "FUN OLOLOL" I think you re-post shit like this this over and over again because it's "FUN OLOLOLOL" .
What i find offensive is that you guys didn't fact check. My point is that your "data" is fallacious. #36 is not a contradiction, and there are a lot more in your data that are either not contradictions, or entirely trivial. This doesn't concisely and neatly present the fallacy of the Bible, it's a circle-jerk. I know it is a circle-jerk, because now that I've pointed out the circle-jerk is flawed, instead of saying "O, well actually.... (insert counter-point to my point)" you entirely disregarded what i said and called me stupid. You're no better than a Bible-thumper who just got asked about the two creation stories.
I find it offensive that you lambast me because i pointed out that your data is fallacious, when you yourself are lambasted for pointing out that the Bible has contradictions. If you want to organize all the contradictions in the Bible, That's great, you should critically analyze everything you come in contact with. If you want that organization to take the form of a poster so you can put it on your wall and feel good about yourself, AWESOME! But if you're going to be bitching about inconsistency and lack of fact checking... maybe you should fact check... Just a thought.
[–]tkagotquants 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago*
Well sorry to burst your arrogant bubble, but I was responding to your entire post, the fact that some data might be fallacious is not a shock to anyone, sorry but uncertainties exist, even in judgment. Doesn't mean there aren't contradictions in the Bible.
Excuse me, but where did I call you stupid? I said the way you showed yourself was idiotic, or do you deem your post as something that a rational human being would spew out? You can use the completely false analogy that we are "just like those Bible-thumpers" to boost yourself, but the fact is it's completely irrelevant. You can continue thinking that all we want is some poster for atheism, go on! Just keep thinking everyone is in college trying to show how progressive they are by being atheists - utter horse shit of an argument.
I do not deny that some of this image is false and unchecked, but I don't agree that it is all incorrect. This image hasn't been posted yet, so there's that.
No matter how much you concentrate on that one fallacy, you can't bring forth an argument for the Bible that hasn't been beaten do death on this very forum and/or any other forum.
edit: Whoops, you were right, it has been posted before, seems like I've missed a shitload of reposts before I joined.
[–]Mordred19 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
it wouldn't be a big deal if people didn't make the bible out as a big deal. you know, assertions of perfection and all that.
The thing is, the people who make claims like that, are usually the people who have either never read the Bible, or people who are making money off of people who never read the Bible. (Sometimes these groups of people overlap, and that's the scary part)
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
At least people here are open to criticism. If you didn't come off as such a jerk you might have been able to open a dialogue about some of the inconsistencies with the inconsistencies. Good luck finding that on a religious forum.
[–]iMarmalade 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
The word of god to be taken literally shouldn't be filled with errors or contradictions (major or minor).
Now, if you don't take the bible literally, fine, then this isn't addressed at you.
[–]lortortov -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 months ago
Rather silly of an atheist to care enough to devote this kind of time to something like this. You don't believe in god, I sortof do, why does everyone care so much? Reject your human nature in wanting everyone to be the same as you.
[–]_Too_Far_ 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
