Came here to share the same video. Far more entertaining than watching the gif repeat.

This was done by Doc Harold Edgerton i believe. His use of high speed strobe flash was groundbreaking yo

Really cool gif, it's got me on a trail of slow motion videos.

The way the bullet flattens made me remember an anecdote I heard in an archery class. The instructor did a lot of work in film and television and his biggest job was as some kind of archery consultant/co-ordinator for the movie Braveheart. There is a scene where hundreds of arrows are fired and the director wanted this shot from the ground as the arrows were falling on top of the camera. The plan was to get the cameraman sitting in a little bunker with bullet-proof glass for protection. The archery instructor explained this was not a good idea by shooting an arrow through a sheet of bullet-proof glass (although looking back he may have been exaggerating this aspect, he probably just explained the principles behind why it wouldn't work).

The reason the glass broke for the arrow and not the bullet was that the bullet-proof glass is designed to deal with the bullet breaking apart and spreading out on impact, whereas the arrow maintains its form, and the point would break right through the glass.

I've believed this story since I was quite young but if it's bullshit and that's not how bullet-proof glass works then someone needs to tell me.

Wow there is alot of discussion on this topic on the internetz, and alot of backyard experts weighing in as well.

I believe your suspicion is correct. Bullets are not DESIGNED to spread out upon impacting a hard surface. They do so because of the relative strengths of the materials involved.

Now a steel broadhead is harder than a lead bullet and perhaps a copper jacket, but that bullet is also traveling alot faster than the arrow.

Bulletproof glasthat the military uses is designed to match threats that have pointy front ends.

Conspiracy theory: You can see a bullet mark BEFORE the bullet hits the wall. Inside job.

what kind of bullet is that? I don't really get why the outer part just splits off and the inner part either "smushes" or penetrates minimally....

You know how I know that bullet is made of lead?

I'm guessing other metals react differently? Please explain

Lead is very very soft, although it can be, and is often alloyed with other metals to make it harder. That one wasn't likely a hard alloy, but it does have a copper plating so the bullets won't foul gun bores with deposits of lead.

A bullet like that has greater stopping power because it will deform and give up all it's energy into someones body as opposed to a harder bullet passing through them.

That's the readers digest explanation.

That's why you should always wear a seat belt. Imagine you would sit in that thing without one!
