I have never held a gun in my life however I do understand what a gun is and as such I would never hold a rifle that way ever.

prob a .270 or 30-06 or .308 (common deer rifle calibers)

This table lists the recoil force and velocity for a wide range of calibers. A .30-06 comes in around 12 feet per second with 20 foot pounds of energy into your face.
