There will be a post here every Sunday where you can discuss something you recently accomplished in your sexual escapades. Exceptions to this include if you are updating the community on the help they previously gave you or if you have specific advice that you believe will help others to achieve what you just did.

Oh my god this is from the Exponent. Purdue Universities Newspaper... and this went over very very terribly. We actually have a female editor in chief too so she got a ton of flak for it as well.

[–]viennamoon 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes it is. I was an English TA and grad student at Purdue when this was published and our department just about EXPLODED. I've never seen so many angry humanities majors. Many of my colleagues responded to this in their classrooms. It was a hot mess. Oh, Purdue....

Oh, Purdue. Never change.

[–]btone911 2 points3 points ago

They actually responded with an apology didn't they? This was in the paper a few years ago though. Recently they've switched to info from the IU Kensey institue instead of these dumb sex moves.

[–]RasputinPlaysTheTuba -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

DUMB?? NO, BRILLIANT :V the sexponenet was the reason I started reading the paper in the first place. If not for some sexed up gimmick, I wouldn't have realized the greatness from reading a copy every morning with my breakfast. It single-handedly made a lot of non-readers into newspaper conversationalists.

This is a real case, we studied it in a law case. Iirc it was two army buddies and yes they were convicted of sexual assault.

Ha, I thought I recognized that from The Exponent. R.I.P. Sex position of the week. It was a good section of the paper while it lasted.

Alright, here's mine.

What the everliving fuck.

Stuff like this is why I left /r/sex ages ago. I was giving it another go and hoping it wasn't like that here anymore.

I would prefer if people want to make rape jokes, they do that in one of the thousands of other subreddits where that's celebrated. (In other words, basically the rest of Reddit minus a handful of subreddits.)

I wish they could keep the rape jokes out of this one subreddit that has the potential to contribute so much to people's sex lives.

Does /r/sex want to be woman-friendly or does it want to have the same adolescent misogyny that drives so many women away from this site?

I'd love it if there was a sex subreddit that was welcome and friendly to all.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not essential to the joke that the second male does not have consent. Nor is it implied. What's essential is that the girl thinks she's having sex with one person but is suddenly informed in an odd way that she's having sex with someone else. If you cannot imagine that happening without rape occurring, then the thing at fault here is your imagination, not the conduct of the subreddit. Close-mindedness is not cool.

[–]NoahTheDuke 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

informed in an odd way that she's having sex with someone else.

That's rape. Right there, that right there is rape. No jokes, no sarcasm.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You forgot to make an argument. I was already aware that people hold the opposite opinion so your comment has contributed nothing.

[–]NoahTheDuke -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no argument or opinion in what I said. Legally and morally, that's rape. Rape is sex or sex-ish without consent. Consent is the allowance for a specified person to cross a specified boundary, usually a physical boundary. So, if the female in the comic has not yet specified that the second male can touch her at all (let alone sexually), she has not given him consent. Because she has not given him consent to touch her sexually, he is now raping her.

[–]wikikiwi 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. It was not originally published as a funny comic, but as part of a column called "Sex Position of the Week." It described a certain sex position to try and was accompanied by an animation of said position. I actually enjoyed the column until this shit showed up.

[–]naka_witch 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IAMA female with a sense of humour. Yes, if this happened in real life it would probably be rape. But... seriously... nobody is going to switch partners without you realising it.

So I giggled.

A lot.

[–]throwwaawwaayy 112 points113 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I made a throwaway just to comment on this. It happened to me in real life and it wasn't "probably" rape. It was rape.

[–]ggggbabybabybaby 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, really? That's horrible. Not that this in anyway justifies it but was it like premeditated rape like, "Let's trick her and rape her," or did these guys genuinely think they were pulling an awesome prank?

[–]throwwaawwaayy 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if it was premeditated. It wasn't that one of them went to the window and waved at me while his roommate jumped in his place, but I was having consensual sex with one guy (doggy style - so i couldn't see him) and his roommate jumped in his place.

[–]lavieenrose 59 points60 points ago

IAMA also female. I don't find this funny. Screw the rest of us humourless bitches, right?

[–]harvey-birdman 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not at all. You don't have to find it funny and entitled to say there is no humour in it.

But everyone else doesn't have to limit their sense of humour to accommodate everyone else's tolerance for shock humour or really any other topic. Humour is subjective and so is whether you find something offensive/inappropriate.

[–]Othello 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Saying "I don't find this funny" is different from saying "there is no humor in this". One is an opinion, another is a declarative statement of judgement.

[–]BritishHobo 0 points1 point ago

So why does the courtesy only extend one way? Offended people should shut up because others find it funny, amused people shouldn't shut up even though otheres may be offended?

Honestly, I chortled a bit. But maybe that's because I didn't envision it as a rape scenario, instead as a humorous threesome where two members switch as a joke.

[–]MFingPterodactyl 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's only called a threesome if everybody knows everybody's involved. Otherwise it's called rape.

[–]DentD -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right. Maybe I didn't make it clear. Three people agree to have sex. One person abstains from participating at first. That person later switches with somebody else.

Not rape.

I'm a lady, and I read this paper when the comic was originally run in the Exponent (Purdue's student newspaper). I got a good chuckle out of it. It is clearly a joke. They stated it was a joke. The "Sex Position of the Week" is always a joke. One would think college students would be intelligent enough to recognize that, instead of causing a huge uproar on campus.

r/sex might also be the wrong place to post it.

I am so disappointed in this too. There is this and there was a thread a little while back with a list of all of the stupid wikipedia things that are always rude and often rape. This is not thought provoking and it upsets me a lot.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

Rape isn't funny. It's disgusting.

[–]TheAughtSpectrum 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a silly situation that more than likely would never happen. If someone made a post about a girl passed out on a couch, who they then proceeded to rape, then it might be more "offensive". I don't think anybody is seriously considering raping somebody by doing "The Prestige".

[–]Honey_Baked 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Especially because it's hard to pull off.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rape isn't funny, jokes about rape can be funny. Sites like Sickipedia exist because people generally find offensive jokes about murder, rape, etc shocking and funny. Everyone has something that offends them especially (rape, in your case) and that they think should be off-limits, and they will continually be disappointed when others aren't as offended as they are.

[–]akwijsowbj 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So is this a reddit about sex or a reddit about rape jokes?

[–]ex_ample 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rape isn't funny, jokes about rape can be funny.

Well, this isn't /r/funny

[–]Mrow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree that all things have a humorous side and I follow the Louis CK school of thought that everything can and should be made fun of, but there is a time, a place, and most importantly: a crowd, my friend. You don't see any standup comedians going to a hospital and start doing cancer jokes.

You get an upvote because you're expressing your opinion articulately. It saddens me that reddit has decayed into thinking that opinions they disagree with deserve to be hidden with downvotes. This is an important conversation we're having and it shouldn't be shoved in a corner.

[–]idiotthethird 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

False dichotomy. Many people find humour in disgusting things.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never said that it couldn't be both. It is however both disgusting and not funny.

[–]idiotthethird 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The mutual exclusion was implied. But it's nice to know that you're the grand arbiter of what can and cannot be found humorous by people; I'll defer to your judgement.

I was going to hide/ignore this until I saw the absurd comments and instead upvoted.

It is rape. There's no doubt about that. But it's a joke. If you don't see any humour in it that's fine, you don't have to. I found it slightly amusing the first time I saw it (although this has been posted many many times before on reddit).

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

[–]harvey-birdman 0 points1 point ago

Fuck it.

I was going to respond and had a whole thing written out but your comment is just loaded with a baiting statement and it's going to lead to a whole extended "discussion" of internet sexism, and the subjective nature of humour and rape culture. It's really just not worth it in my experience of internet "discussions". It's well past the time for me to hide the thread, ignore internet drama and move on.

[–]NoahTheDuke 9 points10 points ago

Not quite? Having sex with someone without their consent is illegal, regardless of how "funny" it is.

[–]kbar918 2 points3 points ago

Actually, it wasn't. (I was a sophomore at Purdue when this was published.) It was just some generic note explaining what the "sex position of the week" column is. The backlash was so strong that they removed the column for half of the semester, and for the rest of the time that they ran it it was indeed accompanied by a note along those lines.
