I find it humerous that in the thread about the pumpkin the guy carved to look like a portal turret, there is a blog post from Frasier where he says, "I can also confirm that the turret design is as impractical in real life as it looks in Portal, the guns have a limited field of view and the whole top-heavy contraption wants to tip over at the first opportunity. How the turrets deal with recoil from the gun I'll never know. This was clearly the work of a graphic designer, not an engineer."

For me, yes. I don't plan to get it till it drops to $20. I only ever played through the first portal once and i'm sure it will be the same for P2.

Sure, but since I've had to install motherboards with hammers in the past (seriously), I see no problem with that.

[–]firepelt 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would you ever need a hammer to install a motherboard?! I/O shields can be tough to get in place, but you definitely don't need a hammer.

[–]epsilona01 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were old Compaq's, which the PCI slots were on a riser. It refused to go in, and we had to hammer in about 16 or so of them that we were reloading. We tried without the hammering, and they came back to us failed, because that riser wouldn't go in all the way. Stupid, huh?

Actually, this is pretty good. You can upgrade your sentry gun, you can control it manually, and it can't fall over. It is vulnerable to sappers which can disable it and, if left untended, will destroy it, however you can remove the sapper yourself. Turrets, on the other hand, all look the same with an admittedly larger array of colors to choose from, and are completely useless after being knocked over.

I felt really bad of one of the turrets that said that, so I picked it up and took it with me. It was so warm when it thanked me in that little voice. Sadly I forgot that those energy fields vaporised turrets on contact. I've never felt so much guilt and shame.

[–]TBatWork 12 points13 points ago

If it's any consolation, I saw the field and dropped him on the corner. Sure, it was disheartening to have to leave him behind, but he's king of that walkway now and will live forever.

I don't own a Mac so I can't say for sure, but I think it's harder to fix a Mac if it breaks, whereas a PC can have its parts swapped out without too great of difficulty.

Mac turrets have difficulty killing one woman in a jump suit armed with a nonlethal weapon.

Pc ones kill large groups of soldiers armed with chain guns, rocket launchers, and shotguns.

It's funny how Mac users wouldn't even know what a turret from TF2 is if they hadn't ported the game to the Mac after four years.

[–]atomictoast 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The PC can be manually upgraded, but is easily sapped.

The Mac can be knocked over though, and when that happens even standing it up won't fix it, you just have to get another one.

[–]meant2live218 1 point2 points ago

I'm on a MacBook Pro, running Windows 7.

As much as I like the sleek exterior, I wish I could've gotten better hardware for my money.

[–]retrothomas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hear what you're saying and I would probably feel the same way. I've got an iMac and love the hardware but the biggest part of that is the operating system. I love Mac OS endlessly and I think it's the hardware + software combo that makes it work well.

[–]firepelt -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only thing that is good about a mac is the exterior. They are filled with expensive, underpowered/old hardware and have an OS that greatly restricts what you are allowed to do. On top of that, you can do absolutely everything to fix a PC on your own while you would just have to buy a completely new mac.

[–]GroovyBoomstick 5 points6 points ago*

Yeah but what you basically said was I can play every windows game on windows. Well duh.

[–]GroovyBoomstick 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I said was: "You can play every Windows game on Mac; dual-boot". In other words, the whole thing about "Macs can't play games" is a fallacy. Boot-Camp comes with the Mac, and you're encouraged to install a second OS.

[–]EdliA 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only difference between a Mac and other PCs is the operating system. The cpu is the same, gpu, ram, hdd all are the same.

[–]DlSCONNECTED 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So why bother with a Mac?

[–]firepelt 1 point2 points ago

True, but you don't buy a Mac for the gaming ability, I agree, that would be stupid. I have a Macbook Pro, and it's powerful enough to run Crysis on mostly Very High at a decent clip (30fps, give or take). I do need my Mac for stuff outside gaming, though: Final Cut, Photoshop, Illustrator etc, and for these OSX is the industry standard.

[–]AmateurSanta 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're living in the past if you think OS X is still the industry standard for Photoshop or Illustrator. There is lots of bad blood between apple and adobe nowadays.

[–]alyon724 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought adobe products are coded specifically for windows. The OSX versions are merely ports. Hence the worse performance.

[–]morriscey 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

final cut I would say mac is the industry standard. Photoshop and Illustrator I'd say are neutral these days. Any printshop/web design firm or school I've been a part of has been all windows since the 2000's.

[–]alyon724 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The MAC dominance in the printshop/design worlds comes from before when MACs used powerpc proccessors... which were argueable better for that work. Now it is solely due to not being as informed.

Kinda the same situation happened with honda/toyota. They gained their reliability reputation in the 80s and still have not lost it.when owners have something break of have a recall they just blame themselves or downplay the problem.

Dude, the PC should be like the sentry gun in MW2, and the Mac should be the Portal thingy. PC is stout and steady, but can be shot up and killed. The Mac is all streamlined and indestructible, except when you ask it to do something like stand still. You throw too much at it, and it'll fall over and shoot at everything on it's side and then go blank.

[–]golgar 0 points1 point ago

[–]adie5 5 points6 points ago

Why? Do you get more money for a mac?

And people sometimes just upgrade. That is if you have a PC. :-)

[–]Gortos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I bought my PC two years ago, now I looked into upgrading... And if I "upgraded it", the only things left would be my hard drive, the case and the DVD drive.

[–]DoctorPringles 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's always stuff you can use to upgrade for your current setup, unless you bought the top-of-the-line for the motherboard that you currently have, in which case you should have known you'd have to upgrade the motherboard.

Building your PC takes a lot of precognizance. You have to pay attention to how quickly games are moving forward, and use hardware accordingly. That said, hardware goes much faster than gaming requirements do, so it's relatively easy to build a computer that will last for several years into the future, even more so if you leave room to upgrade.

[–]thelopes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Megazell 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why sell it when you can donate it and get a bigger tax break as oppose to selling it. While Mac are unable to be donated since most non-profits prefer a system they can repair themselves when it does down like Windows or Linux.

[–]Nadrik 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would anyone sell their PC? That's what upgrades are for. And if your tech is so obsolete you can't upgrade, you're probably not getting shit of an obsoloete Mac either (though I could be giving the user base too much credit).

[–]DoctorPringles 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually really easy to sell a computer, Mac or PC. There are a ton of people who either don't have a computer, or desperately need an upgrade. If you know what you're doing, you can refurbish your current PC so that it looks brand new and then sell it for at least a couple hundred dollars.

The key is to not try and trade it in or anything, then you'll just get a shit deal.

[–]UltraJake 0 points1 point ago
