Well he tried to pray for rain, which seems to be his only plan. So no, he doesn't care.

You know what would be funny?

If a bunch of people got on twitter and harassed him about it.

I almost had to evacuate for that shit! meanwhile, all my friends from pennsylvania were complaining about too much rain, oh wahhh boo hoo its floodingggg. SHUT UP

[–]MobileD 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, a flood can destroy your property just as easily as a fire could. Plus fire is covered under most regular insurance, a flood isn't.

As someone from Houston, yes we are aware of how destructive floods can be as well.

Which fire did you almost have to evacuate for? We had to evacuate our horses within an hour of the first fire for the tri-county fire.

There was a fire in pflugerville which is across the highway from me, it wasn't the big one but bastrop is pretty close to me too. :/ My grandpa lost his house and everything in the bastrop fire

Ahh, Pflugerville.

"Sign came back, it's gotta typo on it."

"Eh, fuck it."

Sorry about your grandpa, best of luck to all of you. Feel weird not mentioning that.

My grandpa lost his house and everything in the bastrop fire

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear that. Did he have insurance? And is he situated in a house of some sort again?

This has been such a bad year for fires. I was on my way to Anderson, when the trucks were just coming out of the Plantersville fire, and couldn't even see smoke at that point. About 15 minutes later, it looked like a bomb had gone off, and the smoke was about 100 feet in the air. Going back past it on the way home, we were driving through the smoke itself, and the sun (whole sky) had a weird orange glow, even though the smoke was whitish/brown.

I have some furniture if your grandfather would like it, but it is a bit of a drive from here to your area. Basically a living room set, though. I was thinking about donating it to someone that lost everything in the fire in our area, but it is all at the back of the storage unit, and so I figured I would wait until we had help to dig it out. :)

[–]mamamanda[!] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes! he has insurance and they are covering everything. He's staying with family members right now but they are also covering his living expenses elsewhere til everything is situated. thank you for your concern!

It has got to be hard, going through something like this in your golden years. When you are young, it is a lot easier to rebuild, and get everything the way you want it again. But not so much when you are older.

I went to high school in The Woodlands, north of Houston. There were fires in Magnolia, so my high school's been doing fundraisers and stuff to help out families. Apparently it was pretty bad, considering they're doing that.

[–]Hot_Sacks 1 point2 points ago

I went to the Woodlands for a few track meets while I was still in high school. Ya'll have beautiful running paths all throughout the neighborhood. It was no surprise ya'll also had some really good distance runners...

I almost had to evacuate too. The fire was right across the highway from my house. When I woke up the next morning, that was a coating of ash on my car.

As someone who just experienced Texas humidity for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I'm surprised that fire is even possible down there.

I guess it is easier for them to function here...

Went up north to South Dakota a few years ago to volunteer. A few other groups are also at the site my group is at. We are the only ones from the south and humid areas...

They kept telling us to take water breaks because it was so hot... NOPE!

That was the only time I appreciated the humidity down here.

You watch yer mouth, son. Our Lord and Savior, Rick Perry summoned a cleansing fire to sweep the land and then, through group prayer, extinguished it. He did that. In real life. It happened. Seriously.

True shit. When parts of your ecology have adapted to use fire as part of their reproductive cycle, that really tells you something about the expected conditions.

[–]DrDWayneLove 1 point2 points ago

It's only just starting to be summer and there have already been two major evacuation level fires in my area.

[–]Churba 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not quite that bad here - Despicably, I've taken up living in the suburbs, but hey, rent is cheap and when's the last time you saw a rich journalist.

Though, I am surrounded by at least three heavy bush areas - Toohey forest mountain, the uni, and some other assorted parks and such areas - and I've been smelling smoke both on the wind, and in the still air quite often. Definitely smoke off a bushfire, too, that's a smell - as I'm sure you have too - I've been smelling since I was a child, I know it like the topside of my dick.

[–]DrDWayneLove 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh boy do I know that smell. It started pouring here yesterday, but for a week before then that smell was in everything. I've never had to evacuate, but we're put on warning every couple of years, and we've had all our stuff in boxes before. This year is building up to be a bad one.

[–]Churba 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True that - I'm just hoping that the higher rainfall that comes with the la Ninia years will help ensure we don't have a repeat of black Friday.

In fact, I might join the volunteer fire-fighters this year.

Depressing as hell.

Doesn't your state pay firemen to stop of this kind of thing? o.O

I thought most states generally are prepared for disasters that they are prone to, and happen regularly.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most of the fire departments in the country are actually volunteer.

And Bastrop wasn't just a grass fire. It was a firestorm of ridiculous size, moving at 60mph at times. A shitload of resources went to that area and the fire still grew and exhausted those resources. It went to the Federal level pretty fast.

My thinking is that people (not you) saying stuff about "herp derp it's just some trees on fire" have absolutely no idea what it's really like. It's a 100' tall wall of fire moving faster than you can run. Not just some grass on fire.

Recently was the 25th anniversary of some place that should have had their shit together burning down - the Oakland Hills firestorm. Right there east of San Francisco.

[–]EternalRose 0 points1 point ago

I just remember the news anchors: "Texas is burning from border to border!"

And fires breaking out on the highway. Probably one of the saddest parts was when the dog kennel right outside of town got caught in the fire, killed all those poor dogs. =<

[–]tasthesose 0 points1 point ago

My family lucked out during all of this, between my parents, my brother and myself we each had at least one fire in our respective counties, and none of our houses were damaged.

Texas and Oklahoma are definitely worse off drought-wise than New Mexico at the moment, and have been for a while. Some rain in the last couple of weeks has helped, but there's still no end in sight.
