This is by far my favorite I've seen this season, chiefly due to amount of detail.

White man came, across the sea. He carved my head, from pumpkins - see:

You guys are missing the nature of this post. If I had skills like that I would set up a museum, put my prices at the top of the totem, and place a guy outside of the territory to scalp tickets.

I think the artists was very brave to carve something like this.

Indeed. If anyone copies the design, they should Sioux.

The pumpkin is a carving of the artists interpretation of a Native American (Commonly referred to as an Indian).

  1. Anexanhume used the word "chiefly" as he (incorrectly) assumed this was a Native American chief. However, most tribes did not have chiefs but sachems instead.

  2. Zig-Zag used the term brave, as some Native American warriors were referred to as Braves.

  3. Anexanhume replied once again, with the term Sioux. The term Sioux is the name for one of the many Native American Nations. It is pronounced as "sue".

I'd like to add, this is all in good fun and I'm not trying to take a dig at anyone ;) http://i.imgur.com/UasGb.gif

Thank you. Although American Indian is sometimes acceptable.

An anthropologist that I know who works with Native Americans always asks the people that he's working with what they prefer. He says that American Indian is becoming more common, but it might be a regional thing. Edit: which isn't to say that his observation defines how things actually are? I hope it doesn't come off that way. I just thought that it's an interesting linguistics thing.

[–]Redcard911 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a student teacher in a Kindergarten and they required us to refer to indigenous peoples of the U.S. as "American Indians". Although, you being an anthropologist probably recognize ideally they probably prefer being referred to by tribal affiliation.

[–]ophelia_jones 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting! He's made a point to say more than once that American kids are generally taught a pretty shoddy Native American history curriculum, so it's kind of interesting to hear exactly what/how k-6 teachers teach their students. What else were you required to teach?

And I'm still just a lowly undergrad, heh. I'm just learning from some very cool people. He definitely mentioned that there's conflict even within tribes when it comes to tribal affiliation, though--specifically about how people identify vs tribes that the government recognizes. Smaller groups want to be recognized as their own tribe, while the government lumps them into a different one, if I remember correctly. I'm not Native and I've never done any cultural work with them, so I can't speak with any authority on the matter, but I imagine tribal affiliation is a huge part of identity.

[–]shog16 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose it depends on the context... I sometimes refer to myself as Native American even though some people associate that with tribes within the US (I'm from Canada). Somewhat easier to explain to international people since "First Nation" isn't as widely known. Guess I can't speak for Native Americans south of the border, but from what I gather from Canada, "Indian" isn't exactly a term you would call someone.

[–]SenorPretentious 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When introducing myself, I use my tribe (Navajo). When referring to North American aboriginals, i often shorten Native Americans to just "natives." I almost never use "indians." Not so much for political reasons but rather for accuracy reasons. However, I do not really get offended when people use the term "Indian."

[–]shog16 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I agree. I don't normally get offended either, aside from where I grew up. People there used "Indian" as a derogatory term (respected people were referred to as Native, homeless ones were referred to as "drunk Indians")... So that's mostly why I don't like how the word "Indian" is thrown around so lightly. But, when you think about it... they were only named that because Columbus thought he had landed in India, when he really had not.

[–]MetacomCreative[!] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Point well taken. At the risk of derailing this thread, what nation are you a part of?

First Nations is also used in the states, but I don't think very much so by the general population. I tend to use the term Native American when talking to most people as well.

I wouldn't refer to myself as American Indian, but the term is used from time to time. For example, the American Indian Movement uses it in the name of their organization itself.

[–]shog16 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Woodlands Cree, more specifically Northeastern Manitoba.

And I agree, it does pop up once in a while. In fact, I am still considered a "Status Indian" according to the Canadian Gov't. However, I think they just changed that. It was governed by what was formerly called "Indian and Northern Affairs Canada" but recently (like within the last year or so) changed the name to "Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada"

I will never have the dedication to spend this much time and intricate detail on something that will rot and die in a matter of days. If I ever produced something so wonderful I would want it frozen and permanently encased in a fancy glass case where I would force everyone I know, hell even drag strangers in off the street, to look at it and clap and nod appreciatively.

Well... I better stop dreaming and get back to continuing to have no artistic talent.

[–]rironin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, this kind of finally highlighted for me what's wrong with all this fancy pumpkin carving.

This and many other intricate carvings have nothing to do with the pumpkin - pumpkin flesh is just this new medium instead of stone or wood for carving and chiseling. It's impressive work, sure, but at this point the pumpkin is completely ancillary to the craft itself.

It seems like if you really want to carve a pumpkin - as opposed to a block of wood - you ought to take advantage of what it actually is, its shape and possibly the fact that you can put a light inside it.
