Aww, that's a shame. According to this gif, you're a gorgeous dog.

I want to say you're a lab, but I'm not much of a dog person.

I'm nearing the end of making a geek-related crochet hat for someone, and I really wanna post pics of it here, but I'd rather not get a slew of either "whore!" "karma-whore!" "ugly" etc...

[–]sweet_relief 85 points86 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but for every "karma-whore" comment I see on those, I also see 100 silent upvotes. They are the silent majority who actually support you and like what you did.

[–]julieb123 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately, the harsh 1% of words hurt much worse than the 99% of silent support.

Especially when you see the asshole comments getting upvoted. It'd be one thing if reddit buried assholes (any public forum will have them), but...

[–]julieb123 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's what makes it so much worse. They get so much support for being assholes.

So ignore them. They're not worth getting upset over. Besides, you're reaping in that sweet, sweet karma.

It's hard when they're all so nasty. It's easy to ignore a few unpleasant remarks, but there are just so many, you know?

[–]nowxisxforever 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of the nasty remarks are from people who tend to be a bit nasty. There are a lot of nasty people in the world. :( Try your best to ignore them and let the negativity and nastiness roll off your back. <3

You can post it in r/knitting, we are a friendly bunch :) (and despite being called knitting we welcome all fiber-crafts!)

[–]anillop 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh crap there is a /knitting I hope my girl friend doesn't find about about that. The last thing she needs is another knitting site like ravelry.

[–]opalorchid 1 point2 points ago

I just started crocheting on Friday, that's considered a fiber-craft right? On Sunday a woman in this awesome little yarn/knitting shop told me about ravelry.

[–]veggie-dumpling 1 point2 points ago

Or in r/crochet! The smaller subreddits tend to be much nicer about photo submissions.

Yeahhh, I knitted a really adorable kitty-eared hat, and thought twice about posting it after I came across the "monkey hat" fiasco. We just wanna share our projects because they take a lot of time and effort and we're proud of them, what's so horrible about that? If society ever collapses, we'll be making the clothes, and people will really appreciate our talents then haha ;D

Monkey hat fiasco?

[–]hercelestialbodies 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeahhh, this really happened. An innocent, well meaning girl submitted a pic of her modeling a monkey hat that she crocheted, and got lots of insulting comments hurled at her. I knitted a kitty-eared hat, and I can attest to the fact that it really is hard to show all the details of the hats without putting it on a head. I don't have a plastic modeling head lying around to use instead of my own (most people don't) so I just decided not to share instead of being called all kinds of names. Poor girl, she's just tryna show people her skills. Sheesh. What is humanity coming to? I mean, these meanies were probably little boys, but still. I guess this is the kind of behaviour we can expect from some redditors ):

[–]annarchism 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh wow. That makes me so mad that I can't even think of anything to say in response. It's just so needlessly mean.

[–]hercelestialbodies 0 points1 point ago

It's a good thing that she's a smart, strong lady and doesn't let those comments bother her. No one should have to deal with this pointless harassment. The love that we withhold is the pain that we carry, lifetime after lifetime.

Yeah, when I finish this one thingy I'm making for my boyfriend, I want to post in /r/craftit or whatever the biggest DIY subreddit is, after I give it to him. And it's going to be just the product, not myself. Bugger the haters. Maybe I should take a picture of him with it, looking all happy.

[–]ScaryCookieMonster 24 points25 points ago

There's also /r/somethingImade, in case you hadn't heard.

Also, smaller hobby-centric subreddits like that are more populated by mature adults, so you shouldn't be inundated with as many offensive replies.

I've never seen that sort of comment on r/crochet or any of the other craft related subreddits. I have in the past downvoted people for not showing their item properly (for example, one girl was "showing" a picture of a quilt she made... and the picture was of the quilt wrapped around her so you couldn't see it. I downvoted, asked for a proper picture and then upvoted when she supplied one), but people generally have nice and encouraging comments.

Anna Prosser is the girlfriend of professional Starcraft 2 gamer Geoff Robinson and an active member of the Starcraft 2 community herself. She is constantly called ugly by a lot of internet trolls.

Anna Prosser is not an ugly woman. In fact, she was/is Miss Oregon and competed for Miss America. If a Miss America competitor is being called ugly, what hope does anyone else have?

Ignore the trolls and remember its not about you. Its about them and their hatred of women and their need to feel superior to others. I'm sorry that some men are like that, but aren't all that way, I promise.

Some people hiding behind the veil of anonymity that is the internet seem to feel that it's okay to be mean.

I was very awkward throughout Junior High and part of High School, but afterwards I lost the big dorky glasses, wore braces for two years to straighten my crooked teeth, and worked on increasing my self-confidence.

I stupidly posted some pictures on r/AmISexy a while back and I was called names and told to try out r/AmIUgly instead. I felt very embarrassed so I deleted as much evidence of the post as I could... and I learned my lesson to not ever invite people from the internet to judge me.

[–]GorillaJ 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I stupidly posted some pictures on r/AmISexy a while back and I was called names and told to try out r/AmIUgly instead.

/r/AmIUgly isn't where ugly people post. It's where people who are obviously good-looking post to get self-esteem boosts.

So don't feel too bad about being guided there.

[–]TheSilverLining 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Amusingly, r/AmIUgly seems (from my brief browsing there so I may be wrong) to have a much more positive vibe. Maybe r/AmISexy has a vibe more like those terrible "rate me"-type sites.

[–]dietotaku 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm not sure whether people are calling you ugly because of a picture of yourself that you've posted or just in response to something you've said... i have to admit the former is exactly why i abhor posting my photos online and will avoid it at all costs. i get the latter as it is ("you said something i disagree with! you're probably fat and ugly and have no friends!"), i don't want to give those people any more ammunition.

[–]Dumblonde 12 points13 points ago

People who post ugly comments have ugly souls. I can't imagine a worse fate. They are their own punishment just as you are your own reward.

[–]waterproof13 2 points3 points ago

There might be a day when you stop feeling like this because you will realize, not just rationally, that these actions say more about the other than about you.

[–]Beatle_Matt 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't get it....are you ugly?

If you aren't, then what's the problem? Let people call you ugly all the want - they're idiots.

If you are ugly, then do something about it. They're still idiots mind you for calling you that, but you can do things so people won't see you as "ugly".

I'm wondering, why do people post photos of themselves on an anonymous website if they can't take what other people say about them?

The internet is not a place full of wonderful people, and thinking the opposite is quite frankly naive.

[–]elleenelle[S] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The irony is that I was not the main focus of any photograph - I either happened to be in the background or only a small part of me was shown. Yet somehow I still would manage to get some kind of comment made about me rather than the subject of the photograph - my very cute cat for example. I get over it pretty quickly and it's a simple click to remove any insults from your sight. I think the people who seek to write hurtful comments are small individuals thriving on the anonymity of the internet - but it in no way should justify or excuse their actions.

[–]harribel 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are a lot of shitheads in the world who don't understand how to behave when communicating to or with another person. Glad to hear you get over it quickly thou! Just remember the golden rule, what goes on the internet stays on the internet. But then again, don't let me discourage you from sharing parts of your life with the online community. Without people sharing, the internet is a lot lett rich place to visit

[–]elleenelle[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OP here - just wanting to clarify some stuff to stop people getting their knickers in a twist or thinking I am posting random pictures of myself and not expecting judgement in any way. I am fully aware of the number of absolute asshats that populate reddit, but also very aware of how many lovely people there are!

I posted a couple of photos - one of which had my cat asleep cuddling into my arm after I had fallen asleep. It was a cute picture that my dad had sneakily taken, but my cat looked so adorable in it. I made the mistake of posting it without having cropped myself out (rookie mistake). Cue barrage of abuse regarding me in the picture (ironically nothing said about cute kittycat). Promptly deleted it as I don't see the point of leaving it there for more abuse.

Another barrage of abuse came from a picture of my eyes in which no comment was made about my eyes, but instead directed at my general looks. Lesson learned - photo removed and subreddit removed from my list.

I don't consider myself to be hideously ugly after working both on my looks and my confidence for many years.

The point of my original post was both to share this cute gif in this context - sometimes the crap that gets thrown at you makes you want to just pull a cover over your head - and also to thank 2X for being a place were I feel like I'm not going to be completely torn apart (at least not too much ;) )

I am fairly confident, but there are certain things that will still make me feel like shit and want to hide away. Then I brush it off, click the hide button, and walk away from it safe in the knowledge that the internet and the world is full of assholes.

And fear not, no more pictures of myself will EVER be posted.

I'm super new to Reddit....why do people do that? Is that like part of the culture or something? I thought Reddit is a place for people to share and connect, that makes me sad that anyone would be so hurtful and disrespectful to you. Especially when my guess is that a decent majority of the dudes on Reddit resemble toads (I've been to local Reddit meetups)

[–]GreenBeanCassarole 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's because any time you put a picture of yourself up on a website where hundreds of thousands of people can see it, you should expect some mean comments. Regardless of who you are.

[–]mariajciao 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess it makes sense, I just don't know why anyone would want to be mean-spirited just for the hell of it. I'm sure it's nerve-racking enough to post a picture to that many people without the added fear of some jerk scrutinizing how you look. Note to self: do not post pictures of myself on Reddit unless my self esteem is unusually high that day :)

I would never engage in conversation with any of these small-minded people and I'm a strong pup. I've dealt with worse crap in real life and their 'opinions' and hate-talk don't really have any lasting effect on me. I'll get annoyed then move on (and probably not bother visiting that subreddit anymore).

But I disagree with what they do and with how they use anonymity as a weapon. Just because 'it's reddit' shouldn't ever justify their actions.
