              To me, the cat looked like he had been playing. He was in an alert, but not defensive stance. The cat probably lightly clawed or bit the kid during play. The parents could have been trying to calm the child down verbally (we don't know) when the kid flipped out and hit the cat. That's not neglect.

              I was going more off the kid's demeanor. He was already crying, so I think he was already messing with the cat and it wasn't acting how he wanted it to.

                If the kid walks over and mischeviously slaps the cat or pulls his tail and gets pounced I would agree, but someone had the camera out and was watching this go on for some time already.                 This is precisely what most of our parents did with all of us. Some of our parents put the cat in time out, "OH-SON"ed the boy with cuddles and assurances that he is still a great person so as not to hurt their self esteem or create feelings of inferiority towards a cat, then filed a incident report against the cat... two more, cat, and you get euthanized. Now both of you need to sit in this room and talk about your feelings about the incident.

                Lets start with you cat... "I when you hit me in the face I felt:..."

                Kid grows up and says, "Oh the injustice. Horrible parents! Why are they filming this and not dragging out the incident reports?!? OH, the boys self esteem is going to be RUINED!!!"

                          Toddlers and animals, in general, should not be mixed. My sponsor family has two boys, ages 3 and 5. They (not the parents neglectful actions) have killed multiple fish and hermit crabs. They hit their dog, Ruby, and pull her ears/hair while trying to get her attention. They even try to poke her eyes. Maybe these kids are just evil but I still conclude that sometimes toddlers and animals should be kept apart.

                            I think it depends on the personality of the kitty and the personality of the toddler. My childhood cat, Ghengis Khan, was very patient and very mellow. I was curious but gentle. We got along famously. He liked to hop up into my crib and cuddle me :) (it's a good thing I didn't suffocate I guess)

                                                ...I don't even know how to address an issue like that because my son has never been so ill mannored to hit strangers like that...

                                                But I know that if he ever did, I would snatch him up and embarrassed the fire out of him with a public smack on the rear (usually only takes one) and them make him go to each and every person he hit and apologize.

                                                I just don't feel like it is a strangers responsibility to disciplined someone else's children..that's the parents job...though I know many don't seem to know how to do so.

                                                only makes you a bad mommy if you place both kid and cat together, KNOWING it is going to happen then film it. Also, lack of teaching your child that cats don't like their tails pulled, fingers in ears, or picked up and squeezed to death could lead to issues in the future. However, you are probly a very good mom and pet owner and you showed your son how to treat the animals around him and were present when he tried to give the kitties love..to make sure no one got unnecessarily rough...instead of filming it even after he was already crying.

                                                  This just really pisses me off. The kid slaps the cat, cat teaches the kid a lesson. But in the future, the cat is never going to trust the kid. The cat is more than likely going to always be defensive around the kid, scratch and such. And then the parents say "oh, our cat is abusing our little baby! We can't keep him". And then they either abandon the cat or dump at a shelter and we need to find the little guy a new and better home :(

After getting hit, it just pounced and ran. To my mind that cat wanted to play tag. Kid seemed to be taking it too seriously.
