  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

          Because others are confused in the same way. There's a disconnect between the way the ice cube means his sentence (I was water, then it got cool, and I converted to ice) and the way a stereotypical hipster would mean it (I was water, then a bunch of other—err, things—also became water, but I was first on the block). It's just a bit of a clunky joke.

          What upsets me about the joke though, is that it implies that water is NOW cool. Water will never be as cool as ice.

          The other way doesn't work either - with steam. It would have to read "I am water before it gets cool" - which ruins the joke as well.

          There's got to be a more elegant way to execute this joke! I just know it!

          It could refer to the water, "I was water, before water was cool" and in that case it should be vapor instead of water. Since water is the only subject in the sentence, water is the only thing "it" can refer to. I can see how the environment can be implied, but if that is the actual meaning of the sentence then it is poorly worded.

            This really confused me at first, but I think I understand it now. It all comes down to how you define a hipster. At first I thought that this was either obvious (=not funny) or incorrectly written. Ice was water before it got cool makes perfect sense, but in a scientific matter: before it was cool, it was warm and ice was therefore logically water; but this is not funny. I then thought that it was incorrectly written and was supposed to be "I was ice before it got cool". Now, this makes sense in a funny way: the hipster ice wanted to stand out and became ice, eventhough it (as in trend, but also environment) wasn't cool at that time, became cool later. I was satisfied with this interpretation, but comments explained that the text was correct as it was. Got me thinking again. What if a hipster tries to avoid being mainstream cool? What if he wants to stand out by being different in a non-mainstream cool way? Conclusion: Ice was water, then it was cool to be water, so everybody turned into water and Ice couldn't stand out because it was mainstream cool, so he turned into ice to stand out once again by being cool in his own personal way. Tl;dr: It comes down to your definition of a hipster. Ice wants to stand out by being not-cool (or cool in his own way).
