I was at a zoo in Lanzarote a couple of years back. I'm wandering along, and all of a sudden I notice this tiny little hand stick out of the bars right in front of me. I knelt down and had a look at the thing, and it just stared back, sticking his hand out further. I wanted to give it my finger, but I didn't want to hurt it in any way... A zoo keeper spotted me just staring at this adoring otter, and gestured for me to go ahead. I slowly pushed my finger toward the cage, and he latched on instantaneously. It was such a weird sensation; it felt slightly rough, but also padded, like a leather balloon. I must have sat there for 3 or 4 minutes, attracting a large group of children, before I decided to let them have a turn. I don't know why, but this tiny creature grabbing for my hand and staring back at me has really stuck with me... I guess I'm still concerned as to why he was grabbing for people.

The same thing happened to me at a zoo when I was young, except it was with a monkey (I can't recall what kind) may have been a chimp. Anyways it reached out and I was so game. We touched hands, it got a hold of my wrist and furiously started to try and pull me through the bars. I was horrified and trying to get free. I managed to get loose and then immediately got in trouble.

Otters habituate ridiculously easy to humans. It's a huge problem for organizations that attempt to rehabilitate otters. The only success they've ever really had with pups is to use surrogate otter mothers to raise the pup, otherwise they'll very quickly become best friends with humans.

Whenever possible, if an otter can't be released into the wild for that reason, it will end up in a zoo. It's just a shame that otters are so ridiculously expensive to feed.

I took a backstage tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the workers who help rescued otter pups wear what they call the "Darth Vader Suit": a black mask, black cape and black gloves. It's to prevent the pups from seeing humans and imprinting on them. We saw one of them don the outfit to move an otter, - it was awesome.

Yeah, the SORAC guys have gotten pretty good at that sort of stuff. However, those suits don't work well for long term parenting. They tried all sorts of stuff to try and replace an actual otter as a mother, and those otters would just show up again after harassing a kayaker or something. With adult otters, you don't need a surrogate (because they don't need a mother), but the pups definitely need an actual surrogate mother unfortunately because they rely on their mother so much for learning in addition to food supply.

They have a program set up for females who have lost pups, or "Aunts" to teach the pups if they're at the aquarium long-term - it's pretty damn cute to see them together.

Made me think of the scene near the end of Koyaanisqatsi where an elderly patient in a hospital bed reaches a hand out looking for some human contact, and an RN comes and clasps it. That movie is powerful.

I used to work as a dogsbody in a zoo.

Frankly, the otters were cutest little bastards except for the red pandas.

The otters learned to recongise the zookeeper uniform, and would go utter ape everytime I walked by, thrusting themselves en masse to the glass wall of the enclosure.

Working in that zoo was the best menial job I ever had.

Oh and THIS, soooo cute too!!

"Mating takes place in the water and can be rough, the male biting the female on the muzzle – which often leaves scars on the nose – and sometimes holding her head under water.[8][63]"

[–]elizzybeth 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, yeah, that's one of my favorite facts about sea otters!

I live in an area with a ton of sea otters--actually, the "sea otter after mating" photo on Wikipedia was taken right by where I live. When you go out sea otter-watching with binoculars, you can sometimes see when their noses look like this. Then you know that things have been getting hot and heavy in otter land!
