It's better because of overused, shitty memes?

I was just about to say I'd take shitty statuses over unfunny meme regurgitations any day. At least I can repost the shitty statuses for glorious karma.

[–]Chronophilia 5 points6 points ago

This just in: Facebook has begun tracking karma. All human civilization was destroyed.

Yeah Reddit is great, because I can downvote this shitty post!

I just started deleting people's accounts when they keep posting shit. I think I became too grumpy for facebook.

Too bad one can't do that on reddit.

I tried to like this...

I always catch myself doing this. It's usually to upvote someone's late comment because it's good and I want it closer to the top. Then I realize I'm an idiot.

I do this on pretty much every website I visit after browsing Reddit.

[–]Opolious 1 point2 points ago

I tend to get annoyed at all the stupid crap my friends post.

[–]omgimonfire 1 point2 points ago

If it gets to the point that the only difference between Reddit and Facebook is the existence of a downvote arrow, I quit the internet.

my facebook has just become an epic feed of reddit reposts. people raking in likes from those who are internetly challenged

I don't always go on reddit.

But when I do all the links I click are about facebook.

The real reason is that my mom isn't on reddit.

[–]gloomdoom 1 point2 points ago

meh...you can downvote on reddit but the content is pretty much exactly the same: "Look what I did/made/saw/ate today!"

[–]sumoshart 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also try to upvote good things on other sites.

I know it's hard for current day teens and twenty-somethings to fathom, but the internet IS good for more than your own personal entertainment.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think this about the internet in general, just about two websites. Also, you realize people have already graduated from college by twenty-something and are professionals in their field (including doing research)? Is there some new use that comes when you hit 30 because I don't think any promotions between there will substantially change their use of the internet?

[–]MadeByMonkeys 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No I just think that the younger generation has a different perspective about life in general, including the sense that life-and-or-the-internet owes them entertainment and that it's the primary purpose of both.

Now granted, it's a big generalization, but it seems to bear out an awful lot in my opinion.

[–]Mark_Lincoln 0 points1 point ago

Because not everyone on Reddit is an idiot.

[–]justthrowmeout 0 points1 point ago

Facebook should introduce upvote/downvote. I'd like to see a little more competition involved so status update quality improves. Also would love to downvote idiots to oblivion.

I thought reddit was better because, if we were to post "OMG my friend on facebook is a dipshit" on facebook, they would see it.

[–]yrogerg123 0 points1 point ago

I don't always go to facebook.

But when I do it's to make sure they're not sharing my information without my permission.

My wife started redditing just a few months ago. About a week ago so goes "You know, I find myself wishing I could downvote statuses on Facebook"

[–]220V-50Hz3WRoHS 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I once caught myself almost "liking" one of my own status updates. Then I remembered what a total loser that would make me seem.

[–]generalguyz 0 points1 point ago

I have a friend who works for FB in San Francisco. I've been lobbying for a dislike button since '09. Apparently they've discussed it and decided against it.

[–]Bored_At_Night 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's really no good reason for them to do it.

If it works like people want it to, their site gets less activity because people will stop going on every day to post what they ate for breakfast. Less page views = less ad revenue = bad business decision. Facebook already has a monopoly over the entire market, it no longer needs to cater to the consumer.

[–]DarylHannahMontana 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed, but with a minor observation: Facebook doesn't have consumers in the traditional sense. Its customers are the advertisers, and the users are the product.

[–]Bored_At_Night 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The term 'consumer' is not synonymous with revenue source.

[–]DarylHannahMontana 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm using "one who consumes goods or services" as a definition. I suppose there is room for discussion on what "good or service" Facebook produces; it produces software consumed by the user as well as producing an audience for advertisers to sell to.

Anyway, maybe I'm splitting hairs. I guess that all I'm saying is that their monopoly on social networking isn't as big an issue as the fact that users aren't their customers.

[–]Bored_At_Night 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they are too ingrained to split it into separate issues. User-targeted ad revenue is nothing unique to Facebook. Facebook is just an example of how user-targeted ads work in conjunction with a monopoly over something as large as social networking.

[–]wonderplatoon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But guys? The downvote button is not a dislike button. At all.

[–]generalguyz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is actually an excellent point.

[–]Cayou 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TBH, a "dislike" button would make cyberbullying easier. You can remove nasty comments, but you can't remove "likes" and, presumably, you couldn't remove "dislikes" if they existed (allowing them to be removed by the OP would pretty much defeat the whole purpose).

[–]generalguyz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't that a fairly mild form of cyberbullying, considering all the other much crueler, more public, and just as accessible forms of cyberbullying on facebook? At worst it seems as though a dislike button would just prompt someone to post less. Which, as someone said above, wouldn't be in FB's best interests.

[–]Chronophilia 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's an easy and convenient form of cyberbullying that doesn't leave any room for witty repartee or counterattack.

[–]generalguyz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe I don't understand what you mean by cyberbullying. I think of it as being something more, much more, than just being a dick on the internet.

[–]Bulls729 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now you can at least with Chrome, and others who have the extension can see what you disliked as well.
