Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Camera whoring, character in awkward and unfortunate position, nipples, uncommon subject, element of humor, and self-referential comment. It has it all.

Missing the self-fellating element of "we're so awesome, we're the frontpage of the goddamn internet, etc" that I associate with Reddit so strongly, though.

You're not going to, well if you do it's going to be out of focus, a lens like that can't focus on objects as close as this.

That's a Canon L-series lens.

[–]dukwbutter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Update....that's a Canon L-series lens, and there's no chance that it could take a photo that close to the subject. The lens is a fairly long lens, possibly the 100mm-40mm, possibly the 70mm-200mm. Either way, there's zero chance you could focus in on a subject that close.

[–]skrshawk 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

70-200mm has a petal hood. 100-400mm has a cylindrical hood, so it's more likely.

[–]LenMahl 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It could also be a 70-200mm f/4L rather than the 2.8L.

There is no way that the photo will even be in focus. MFD of the Canon 70-200 f4 is 1.2m

There's no way that lens can focus that closely.

[–]LenMahl 1 point2 points ago*

Extension tubes.

Like this.

Except I would mount the tripod at the lens instead of the camera body. That photographer has a lot of faith in those tubes holding the weight.

[–]dukwbutter 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are y'all serious? Are y'all looking at the same photo I am? I don't see a tripod or extension tubes. Are y'all clairvoyant? Am I missing something?

Update: OK. I just saw your extension tube photo . I've read about these, but I don't do any macro photography, so I've never used them. I agree with the fact that mounting the tripod on the frame instead of the lens is a mistake. The center of gravity would be on the lens foot in this case, instead of the frame.

[–]LenMahl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a photo of a camera and lens with extension tubes for macro photography in my previous post.

The camera is on a tripod and the extension tubes connect on the back of the lens, an area that is not pictured in OP.

[–]dukwbutter -1 points0 points ago

very true. Minimum focal length on this lens is somewhere between 4 and 6 feet, depending on which Canon L-series lens it is.

There's no way in h3ll you could make that lens focus on a subject within four feet. It isn't possible. There's no way I'm aware of to attach a closeup lens to the end of a telephoto zoom lens, not to mention, doing so would make no sense. If you want to take a close up photo of a meerkat, you can certainly use a 300mm or 400mm lens. But you can't touch the subject with the lens. It doesn't work that way.

[–]jelloeater85 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Extension tubes my friend... also all you would see would be a eye from one of them.

[–]dukwbutter 1 point2 points ago

Maybe I'm wrong. You're telling me that you take a long lens (say 300mm or 400mm like the lens in this photo), stick a lens hood on it (keep in mind that the lens hood would cause a huge problem for a wide-angle lens - namely it would block out much of the photo)...but you're saying that, for some reason, you somehow stick another lens on the end of the long lens, inside of the lens hood...is this what you're saying? I've never seen this done. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but my questions would be 1) why? and 2)how?

As for your "foreshortening"? I'll admit that I have no idea what you're talking about. But there's no way that those meercats are more than 6" away from that lens hood. No way that I'm away of.

So, I'm not saying I'm a genius. No doubt I don't know all there is to know about photography. But I can promise you I've never in all my life seen someone stick a second lens on the end of a long lens inside of the lens hood. I can promise you I've never seen that in all my life. So, lay it out. Tell me what I'm missing. Show me an example of someone that's put a 2nd lens inside the lens hood on the end of a long lens. I'd be interested to see this done, and then to know why on earth you would want to do this.

Yeah, I dunno. I've never done any macro-photography. I've never used extension tubes, or connected multiple lenses together. Usually, if I want to shoot something close up, I just use one of the longer lenses and then shoot the subject at the normal focal distance of the lens (somewhere between 6 feet and infinity). So, I dunno. I've never seen anyone in the field shooting like this...shooting with multiple extended lenses and extension tubes. Interesting.

Well, you see, what the Meerkat is gonna do is go for that camera more than the other Meerkat. Boom. Stiff arm. You wanna get close to the lens, because thats where the picture is taken from. The camera is above them, thats why they go up. Boom. Football.

Oh Good Lord, no. It's not Reddit until 15,000 variations have been posted with Scumbag Steve hats, Good Guy Greg references, breasts photoshopped in, bubbles placed in strategic locations on it, atheist vs. Christian pie fights about which one is who, a technical discussion of aperture length breaks out in the comments, fake Steve Jobs quotes on meerkats appear on Circlejerk, fake Ron Paul quotes promising to make meerkats our new overlords appear on Circlejerk, and finally somebody puts up a FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP WITH THE MEERKATS post.

Then and only then will it be Reddit in one picture.
