Exactly what I was thinking. On his computer getting angry would be best.

The Soviet Union was the first state to have as an ideological objective the elimination of religion[1] and its replacement with atheism as a fundamental ideological goal of the state.[2][3] Toward that end, the communist regime confiscated religious property, ridiculed religion, harassed believers, and propagated atheism in the schools.

Atheists are human and have the same exact capacity for dishonesty and to oppress their fellow man as any other human being religious or not.

Stalin wanted to be viewed as a living God, much like the IL dynasty in North Korea. He had a ready made control over people using what used to be religion in the USSR, he wasnt about to screw up the huge thing he had over people, the belief in nonsense and superstition.

So its not that he was atheist or wanted the country to be atheist, he just didnt want any other gods getting attention that he should be getting. He was a jealous god, thou shalt have no other gods before Stalin or Dear leader. Where have I heard that before?

The USSR wasn't the first atheist state. The French First Republic has that honor--as far as I am aware. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dechristianisation_of_France_during_the_French_Revolution

It's not being an apologist to point out facts and remind everyone that atheism isn't a shortcut to moral superiority. We all are human, and have the capacity for horrible actions regardless of atheism, monotheism, or polytheism. Do I wish we could move past the backwards thinking of religion and faith as a virtue over reason? Yes. Do I think doing so would be a magical salve that would stop all wars, end disease, and get me a fresh plate of cookies? No, that's naive. Think before you type.

You are right. My apologies. I've been reading too much of r/atheism frontpage today.

We all are human, and have the capacity for horrible actions regardless of atheism, monotheism, or polytheism.

Damn you couldn't be more right. I went off the cuff because I've gotten emotional over the recent hubbub on the frontpge, and I didn't stop to think. I interpreted your statement as the beginning of the whole "the commie ruskies were evil atheists and they killed more people than anyone else..." argument. In second thought my rebuttal didn't even really address this, as what I was basically objecting to in your post was the claim of the USSR being the first atheist state, when there was the obvious precedent of the First French Republic. As an historian, I tend to be picky about that sort of thing. I guess the combination stuck a cord and I lashed out.

I will edit my earlier post, as you do not deserve the scorn.

My apologies.

While I appreciate the apologies, I feel I should point out that the post wasn't actually mine, heh. I thank you though, for ending the situation in a rational, and polite way.

I am not sure about your facts (not knowledgeable enough) though I completely agree that as human beings atheists have the same capacity for immorality

I can assure you that Atheism isn't responsible for the fall of the Soviet regime. Ponder that.

I see what you are trying to say but a true christian society would not be warring, example, iraq or dropping the atomic bombs. christ said love your enemy, neighbor, ect...

all wars are examples of society outside christ.
