Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

As a photographer, I always hope to get a photo this good and as a person, I hope I never get this chance. Strong photo.

I felt bad
Eyeing my composition
I felt detached
Changing my position

The suns ubiquitous warmth
Shown from their faces
To my mind; reminded my heart
The camera hung from my neck

I am frozen and my soul sunken
Viewing the weight of the world
Atop the shoulders of strangers
A moment files could never know

O_O; That... It just occurred to me that I could be a lying sack of shit, some asshole on the internet pretending to have served, but that didn't even matter to you. I've been told "Thank you for your service" before, but it's usually akin to someone saying "Merry Christmas" or something like that, something they just say to be polite, but it doesn't mean anything. Again, I am drunk, but that really hit me. Thank you.

[–]NiccoHel 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My exact sentiments. People "thank you", almost automatically... not saying they should mean it more, or that they ought to thank us, but it gets awkward.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes! When my company got back to the states, we landed in Bangor, Maine, and there were hundreds of older VFW guys and American Legion guys and all their families there to shake our hands and welcome us home. It felt undeserved. I look back and really appreciate it, but at the time it seemed unnecessary. We were just happy to be home and didn't think any more of ourselves than anyone does.

I had the same experience after my year in Iraq - deplaned in Dallas, Texas, made my way down the walkway that was sectioned off just for us (that led straight to the exit, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars), then right at the doors opening into the street there had to be at least 100 Vietnam veterans and maybe a couple of Korean War vets all lined up.

Each one insisted on shaking my hand. I felt completely awkward and a little disassociated from the shock of it - it was the first time anyone had ever really shown such a genuine appreciation for the fact that I was wearing the uniform.

And I felt like I didn't deserve it - to me, these guys were the heroes.

I sat on a fucking COB for 12 months hoping that when the mortars hit, they hit somewhere besides where I was sitting.

These guys roamed through the jungle, hunting for Charlie, watching their buddies die in front of them.

They fought a war.

I fought boredom.

So when they shook my hand, I couldn't find the words. I just shook my head and tried to say "thank you" back, but it was too loud and I don't think they heard me.

I felt ashamed by the time I got to the end of the line. I never did anything to deserve that kind of gratitude.

[–]808140 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, at least for me, part of it is the fact that you volunteered to maybe die because your country asked you to. The cause, the details -- not important. I don't even agree with the wars, I'll be honest. But people like you sign up to maybe die to protect those of us that can't or won't.

Sure, your experience maybe wasn't as dangerous or stress-inducing as those kids dropped by chopper in the jungles of Vietnam or the ones who weathered the bitter Korean winters fighting a war that ultimately meant nothing. I don't know, but I'll take your word for it. But the thing is, you didn't know what was in store for you when you signed up. You ended up sitting "on a fucking COB for 12 months" fighting boredom, you say. But it might not have been that way. You might have been asked to die and it would have been your duty to. You could have been one of those kids that didn't come home. You weren't, thank goodness, but you might have been.

Ultimately, it's the courage to put yourself in harm's way for our benefit that I at least respect. Even if you had spent the whole time in an air-conditioned office playing XBox waiting for your tour to end, it doesn't matter. Because any day of any week someone could have walked in and asked you to put your life on the line.

You might not be a hero in the classic sense, throwing yourself on a grenade to save your friends or rushing a machine gun nest or whatever, but remember, not every WW2 vet stormed the beaches at Normandy on D-day or took Iwo Jima. But in principle, any of them could have been asked to.

That's what we thank you for.

[–]Peejee13 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They shook your hand because they remember what is was like to be greeted by revulsion instead.

My dad was in the army for 27 years, a Vietnam veteran who watched his friends die. He was spit on when he came home and made damn sure no one else got that if he could help it.

I truly thank those who serve for their willingness to do so.

My wife will stare at you and sob uncontrollably if you are in uniform at an airport. It becomes awkward when she wants a hug, in the middle of a family reunion hug that she is definitely not a part of. I have tried to stop it but you can't.

LOL, kind of reminds me of my flight to basic. The recruit group was mixed with civilians, including this lady that struck up a conversation with one of us. He told her we were all headed to basic. She looks at us, locks her eyes on me and says, "But you're just a baby!" and started crying.

Then the plane pulled away from the gate... long flight.

This just made me think of all the reunions I have been too for returning soldiers. As the SO of a soldier who has been overseas, as awkward as it may seem we appreciate that people care as deeply as she does for being willing to hug a stranger.

Now you have the onions going on me even more, thanks. haha

Seriously though, the thought that you could be lying didn't even cross my mind. I always let active and vets know that I appreciate all that they do because both sides of my family have been there so I know how it feels to have a loved one in possible danger and I understand what risks you went through.

Also, you write remarkably well to be drunk!

What we should all be crying about is the fact that if this death took place in Afghanistan or elsewhere in the world where we are "peacekeepers" then we're all at fault for letting our politicians manipulate us into sending precious lives into harms way for no good goddamn reason. The greatest insult to the lives lost and the families who lost a loved one is the inescapable fact that the life was lost on the whims of politicians and was not in the service of protecting Canada.

As an American, I am far more used to seeing these coffins draped with my own flag. To see it with someone else's really brings it home and makes me sad for what we got ourselves, and everyone else involved in.

Much love to this fallen soldier, and to his family and friends. I thank you for your dedication & sacrifice.

[–]Osiris32 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an American who never served, but has seen his flag draped across the coffins of five of his friends, it's sometimes hard to remember that this war has become much bigger than myself or my community. It was my high-school graduating class that was just finishing boot camp when 9/11 happened, and therefore it was my class who were the first into the fight and the first to die. Five times is far too many where I have held onto the mother or father of my friend, as they dealt with the pain of losing their son. Five times I've had to deal with the pain of losing good friends I loved and cared about. It's sometimes hard to remember that so many others have done the exact same thing I have, that they have also felt the hollowness and deep sadness, anger, and frustration at losing someone they laughed with.

My respect and admiration to any and all miltary personnel, and my hopes for all of their safe returns, no matter what flag is on their shoulder. I don't want anyone else to deal with that kind of loss.

[–]shinero 199 points200 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an American soldier, I too am accustomed to seeing our own flag across a coffin. This picture really slams home that we are in a global conflict. It is the suffering of servicemen internationally that fuels these wars. Let us not forget that.

All my love and thoughts go out to this trooper, his comrades in arms, his family and friends, and anyone who shared their love.

Thank you for posting this, I'm an American of partial Swedish descent and always had a soft spot for the country. I've never seen Swedish soldiers coming home like this. My great grandfather moved here from there, I'm always regaled with tales of his life as a baseball player/brick mason/soldier. He used to tell my dad the legend of Sigurd and the dragons gold with a heavy Swedish accent, wish I could have met him. Wow did I wander off topic there, seeing those coffins just made me feel sad and then nostalgic.

[–]Geekofmanytrades 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a Canadian civilian, but know a number of military personnel. I personally don't agree with your country's war in Iraq, (I do agree with Afghanistan, but that's another thing), but I have the utmost respect for your people over there. It doesn't matter WHY they're over there, they still are over there, and are willing to put their lives on the line for their country. That's commendable. Each time a Canadian soldier comes back in a coffin, thousands of people line the highway between Trenton and Toronto, firefighters, police, military, and civilians, to pay respect to the fallen as they go past. I'm sure a lot of them would do the same for an American as well. He or she has given their life for their country, and that deserves respect, no matter why they did. So believe me/us when we say thank you for your service. As someone else has posted, it doesn't matter if you were sitting on a base for your tour, or in an FOB, at any point you could be called to die for your country and that is certainly worth something.

The day we show the same respect for their lives that we do for our own is the day things can start getting better. Sadly that day seems to be a very long day off. I'm hoping for an alien invasion to help unify us...

[–]808140 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So we can see a picture of alien coffin with an alien flag on it and ask the same questions?

At some point, we as a race are going to have to stop looking outward and start looking inward. We were forged by evolution to be alpha predators, and this propensity for violence that served us well in the wild will destroy our future if not gutted somehow.

I do not know how it might be gutted.

We are well aware of our own apparent lack of significance. Getting a "shout-out" like that for lack of a better term is always a pleasant surprise.

Also to jelaras don't be saddened by that, here in our media we very rarely see coffins draped in American flags, it's understandable that the attention is focused on your own boys. Also we haven't lost the sheer number that you have in the past decade. I could understand Americans being almost desensitized to the image while it still brings tears to our eyes.

I can say without hesitation that I would. Human life lost in battle is heartbreaking no matter the case. Granted, some people I may not mourn for directly but I will always feel for their loved ones.

Background info with names of the fallen soldiers:

Thanks for posting these. It hit me hard seeing those faces again and reliving that day. I was one of the soldiers carrying Pte Graham. He was killed during a friendly fire accident involving an A10.

Everytime I see this sort of emotionally-charged image I think to myself "If only this was for a worthy cause, how much more right it would have looked."

We all wish this picture would portray heroes defending their and our homes, snapshot taken at their darkest of times. We all know this isn't the case, and that those men ar dying senselessly in some illusory, mindless war in the middle of nowhere.

Then I write it in a comment. Then I usually get downvoted.

"On the scale of decades, comprehensive data again paint a shockingly happy picture: Global violence has fallen steadily since the middle of the twentieth century. According to the Human Security Brief 2006, the number of battle deaths in interstate wars has declined from more than 65,000 per year in the 1950s to less than 2,000 per year in this decade. In Western Europe and the Americas, the second half of the century saw a steep decline in the number of wars, military coups, and deadly ethnic riots." - Steven Pinker from his essay A History of Violence

The Canadian Forces are trained to fight wars plain and simple -- always have been and always will be. This the mandate of the Canadian Forces and it was the first thing that was told to us by a very loud and scary PPCLI Sergeant Major in basic training a long time ago. The role of peacekeeping is akin to responding to the floods in Manitoba or disaster relief in Haiti: it was something we undertook because we're a multi-faceted military, but it isn't and never has been the primary role of the Canadian Forces. We train as we fight.

[–]intwtfk 2 points3 points ago
