You forgot to censor "as*holes" on the last page.

But thanks for remembering "sh*tty", now my 8 year old can read it.

That's because an "asshole" is a part of the body, and everybody knows that a part of the body can't be a curse word. However, functions and products of the body can, hence "f*cknuts" and "Sh*tf*cker"

also, walking through the trail of bodies and empty balloons leading up to the nitrous tank. does that still happen? haven't been to an outdoor fest in about..well, whenever Phish's Coventry fest was.

[–]mgh245 2 points3 points ago

Most of the well organized festivals have systematically weeded out the people bringing in tanks. Good riddance I say.

For inhaling nitrous oxide? Weird. In the US a lot of shady characters are known to infiltrate festivals just to peddle balloons of the stuff. They don't care about the music and have been known to get violent.

Musical festivals are more about the party that is attracted to it, than the music itself. Rothbury(now called Electric Forest) music festival in Michigan is insane. Such an awesome atmosphere and party.

Dude, what. I'm not denying that the atmosphere at most festivals is awesome, but at least for me the music comes first. I'm not gonna pay shitloads of varying magnitude to go to festivals just to hang out. I can do that for free.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe it's just me but I find the people that go to "hang out" instead of to see their favorite bands are the ones that fuck it up. Case in point, at Summerfest in Milwaukee they give out free tickets like prostitutes give out venereal diseases, so you get people that go "just to go", and you get older people that start drinking at 3pm and stay til 1 am and just talk the whole time and ignore the band and are huge assholes due to some combination of being old, drunk, and out of their element. This is why I love concerts at smaller venues way more than those at festivals, because the smaller venues bring out the people that came to enjoy the band just like you did and everyone has a mutual interest in enjoying the concert. Also why lollapalooza will always be better than summerfest- higher ticket prices means they can afford to have more exclusive acts, and it keeps out the people that just go there to drink. As a result shows are awesome.

This is mostly true in recent years, but I saw Alkaline Trio for the first time at the 2010 warped tour, so I can't complain.

[–]mondt 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I look at Warped Tour, I see 10 or so whiny poppunkrock bands, 10 or so hardcore full song breakdown bands, a handful that fit into either of those but a bit more creatively, some rappers (usually nerdcore), and like 5-10 indie titles.

Plus all the super popular people.

I have seen bands at a few festivals that almost perfectly fit pretty much every single one of these.

  • Increasingly Mainstream Headliner - Mumford and Sons (Bonnaroo '11)
  • Good Headliner Playing Shitty Latest Album - The Decemberists (Sasquatch '09, + Bonnaroo '11 sorry I like the older stuff)
  • Inoffensive Singer-Songwriter - Phil Lesh (Langerado '08)
  • Out-of-Place Rapper - Lil Wayne + Eminem (Bonnaroo '11)
  • 90's band grasping at fading nostalgia - Jane's Addiction (Sasquatch '09)
  • Bearded Jam Band - Avett Brothers (All of them)
  • Fat Jam Band - Railroad Earth (Langerado '08)
  • Fat, Bearded Jam Band - Futurebirds (Bonnaroo '11)
  • Reunited Band Friend is Flipping Out Over - Gorillaz (Coachella '10)
  • Lead Singer Making Bad Career Choice by Going Solo - Robert Plant and Band of Joy (Bonnaroo '11, I know he already had a career, but that music is bad)
  • Band that will Cancel at Last Minute - Vampire Weekend (Langerado '08, it happened, I was there; they cancelled so they could play on SNL)
  • Female Jazz prodigy who shouldn't be around this many drugs - I wish I could remember what her name was or what festival I saw her at...but she played a mean jazz guitar

did you go this year? It was my first time, great vibes and great people

[–]SlappaDaBass 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been going the past 3 years and while it's a great time, it's also gotten increasingly overcrowded. This year was almost unbearable due to the giant mass of people. The organizers are going to have to make some changes in order for it even to happen next year due to the death and 2 severe injuries caused by the lack of parking (car's brakes gave out and ran over 3 girls in their tent killing 1). They're being sued because of this from the parents of the dead girl and could revoke their permit and licenses. Hopefully that won't happen but they at least need to sell about 5-10 thousand less tickets.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yea I was camped out right next to them, I woke up to the screams. It took me about a week to get over some serious depression after that.

[–]SlappaDaBass 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Damn that's crazy. We parked over there the first 2 years we went 09 and 10 and hated that area to begin with. It took half an hour to walk to the stages. At least this year they gave y'all a sweet ass ferris wheel. We got the prime spot up to the side of the stages even though that hill is a major bitch.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, you need to lighten up if that's how you view a music festival, you're obviously not giving anything a chance based on preconceptions. The amount of joy you get out of listening to music could increase exponentially if you allow yourself to actually listen to music other than what you "came to see".

The last time I went was in 2009. It was my perfect lineup for the most part. Except the Killers. They were pretty out of place but I needed a nap anyway. EDIT: forgot what year it was. Anyway, I'll be sad if it's gone downhill. I never check the lineup anymore because I can't go no matter who's playing. I try to save myself that feeling of wanting to go. Also, I'm a huge fan of 90's shoegazer stuff so My Bloody Valentine was worth the price of admission. I went when Radiohead and Pixies headlined and that might have been my favorite year out of the three I went.

Yea around 09 was when it was going down. The past two years weren't that great.

I don't understand why people hate jam bands so much..to each their own, but bands like Phish or String Cheese incident are incredibly talented and honestly sound nothing like each other- so its also strange to me that they're wrapped up in the same genre.

Is it the crowd? Because that shit pisses me off sometimes too.

Naturally. How can someone compare them to Phish?? As far as I'm concerned they're more related to prog bands like King Crimson or Zappa even. And they went to fucking Notre Dame--these guys aren't bearded wash-ups like siouxsie and others are implying--they're extraordinarily creative and intelligent musicians.

[–]findyourline 0 points1 point ago

They have been my favorite band for the last 5 years. Love those guys.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

People like shorter songs in general. Musicians and music aficionados also argue that jam bands are just lighter, less focused versions of their influences (these people are also disillusioned about the "magic" of improvisation, as every musician can write in improv sections into their songs and jam on them for 20 minutes.) and I'm in the "too much time spent listening to jam bands in my teens/early 20s" camp. I went from wanting to listen to phish 24 hours a day to not caring if I die never hearing another phish song again (not out of hate or anything, they gave me some amazing moments, I've just listened too much.)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Tell that to any jazz musician.

An improv-jazz musician would scoff at you and tell you that he has worked very hard to be able to improvise in the Ionian mode or in a jazz scale, and that not anyone can do it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ah, i see how i sound like a douche, didn't mean it that way :)

I said that because a lot of jam band fans think Phish/the Dead has ESP or is magic or is completely random or that they are 100% unique and special and their jams emanate from the hippy vibe vortex. Whereas, it's really a pre-planned spot in a song with a set structure that they usually stay within, and when they divert from it, it's communicated through body language and other, tangible signals. And they improvise so tightly from years of playing together and knowing each other's musical habits way too well.

By "every musician," I mean well-studied musicians, like Phish, not like any garage band.

So, someone with knowledge of how jam bands "work" might be a bit disillusioned, depending on their taste. Of course, I know musicians who love that shit, so it's not like i'm stating a hard rule or anything.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree with you, quite honestly I've grown a little tired of Phish as well, but I can't deny that what they do is special.

The crowd has become increasingly obnoxious and the drugs, mainly nitrous, are getting out of hand in some areas of the country. Curious, have you heard about/encountered the nitrous mafia?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah, the nitrous sellers were around when I was, but literally, immediately after coventry, i was done with all things jam band. Just seemed like a good way to send myself off-- worst show ever, supposedly the last phish show, swampy mud everywhere.

[–]gdp1001 -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. The neo-hippies in the crowd don't stop talking about how amazing this song is and how they just KNOW Phish is going to cover a whole Dead albumb.

That and honestly, the music is fucking boring to a lot of people.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, Phish resents the fact that they're constantly compared to the dead..and they RARELY cover them, which is saying a lot because their cover list is enormous. As for boring I can't fathom that since literally every one of their songs are different every time they're played.

[–]gdp1001 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are very similar traits with the Dead and Phish. Jam bands, groups of people following and attending every concert possible, individual songs are SO DIFFERENT DUDE at every venue. I'm not saying these are negative aspects of either band, or any act, but it does turn many people off. Especially when fans tout this so much.

Just as you find all Phish songs unique and awesome, I bet you would not enjoy a four hour Armin van Buuren trance extravaganza. While someone who really loves electronic music might abhor Phish's boring and repetitive tracks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm talking about the music, not the crowd.

I just looked up "Imagine" by Armin van Buuren, and I like it. I don't love it, because what I love in music is variation and technical aspects of the craft, i.e accomplished guitar playing.

In "Imagine" their are no time signature variations, no key changes, and the melody follows basic scale structure, so I find it predictable.

I literally could do all of that myself with a guitar and a synth. I am NOT saying I could write this song, but I could definitely cover it, and that's why it bores me somewhat.

[–]DanBresson 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No you can't I've been making music like that (drum n bass, not trance though), since I was 14, and I can tell you right now that even if you can write the music, the production skills are every bit as complex as your "accomplished guitar playing". That and trance serve a different purpose- to be danced to at loud volumes. They're written and structured in loops for djs to be able to mix and blend songs. Making the music is half the craft

[–]barkingtele 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just cause you can play the notes doesn't mean you can cover it.

[–]gdp1001 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As you said earlier, to each their own. But it doesn't seem like you can deal with the criticism of Phish and jam bands in general. Many people don't go to shows looking for the technical prowess of the artists. They also view Phish as predictable and boring as much as you see Armin's music as just that.

Music is boring if it can be covered? I think if you find a talented enough group of musicians they could cover Phish, they could cover anything.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think music is boring when (like I said above) there are no time signature variations, no key changes, and the melody follows basic scale structure. You are generalizing (i.e the irrelevant Dead reference, and the neo-hippy comments), I wouldn't be able to handle that "criticism" regarding any subject.

My argument about predictability was mainly referring to the fact that Phish changes key or time signature often, thus making them incredibly unpredictable. Some people don't hear it, some people don't like it-- but you can't argue that they aren't dynamic. If you've never heard the song "Reba" there is no way you could even hum along the composed ending.

[–]gdp1001 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People view Phish as just a continuation of the dead and that everyone who goes to these shows is a hippy. Obviously that's a generalization and not true, but a lot of the fans have long hair, drop acid, and love whippits.

Just as if I got to a metal show, not everyone has dreads, wants to headbang, and kill the world. Or if I go to an electro show, not everyone wears kandi and rolls, but many do and that's what people remember and see.

Technical music is great, and I'm not arguing that Phish isn't dynamic. But if you don't know or care what to look for, it's fucking boring. I just watched five videos I found on youtube of Phish. I almost fell asleep, just as I did in college when my friends(phish lovers) tried to get me to understand how amazing and life changing their music was.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As for boring I can't fathom that since literally every one of their songs are different every time they're played.

not true. some songs have spots where they improvise (usually songs with no solid ending, like Tweezer or a spot for a jam in the middle, like YEM), others are just normal songs (Fee.) Occasionally they'll randomly get into a huge jam out of nowhere in a song but that's the exception.

And I haven't followed since Coventry, but from what i hear, they aren't as experimental live these days.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen Phish quite a few times and I'm very familiar with all of the songs you listed...just trying to prove a point. I will take that back, but the songs (most) they jam on are always varied, and you can't argue that.

Coachella ftw. No jam bands any time I've been. And the rappers weren't out of place. And the headliners were breathtaking. I wish there was a festival on the east coast that could approach the awesomeness of Coachella.
