I actually posted this on facebook as bait for the fundies. To lure them out and then, well, no I don't delete people for a difference in belief.... they usually delete me.

The number of galaxies is pretty low. Even more telling is that there are approximately 44 trillion stars in the visible universe for each person on Earth.

Nope. There will always be more numbers. Number's go on to infinity. Stars are finite. Still there's a lot of them.

I think he might mean named numbers.

Technically, they can't really go on to infinity, as infinity is not a number, and thus numbers cannot ever be equal to it.
But yes, numbers do go on forever.

There are about 100-200x more galaxies than that poster indicates. And the statement opens up a series of philosophical questions that can't be answered by something pithy.

If you are able to imagine and comprehend the vastness of space and the amount of stars and energy a billion universes has, then I think you are off to a good start of understanding the truth about the universe.

Galaxies, you mean.

And what truth is that?

The truth that, at some point, we are ALL doomed.

Individually or the human race, do you mean?

It's about 80 billion galaxies, actually.

I've never heard an astronomer or astro-physicist claim a figure that low. It is usually 200-400 billion

Ah. I once heard it said that there are 15 or 16 galaxies for every man, woman, and child.

Well, clearly God is not omniscient else he'd have foreseen the end of manned space exploration and known that we wouldn't need quite so much room.
