I love how the parents come to the rescue. It reminds me that they are so much like humans. Until they throw shit at each other........ Nope, still like humans.

I was once at a gibbon enclosure that contained a family of four: mom, dad, brother, sister. The sister was a really young baby still, and the brother was, well, whatever the gibbon equivalent of a toddler might be. The mother was hanging from the bars, staring off into the distance, holding the girl in one arm, when the brother came up and started poking his sister. The baby let out this godawful shriek like she was being murdered, which snapped the mother out of her reverie, whereupon she turned to the boy and gave him a good whack upside the head. The father hung morosely in the corner, just staring at the bars.

It was all far too human.

They shouldn't keep primates in enclosures, unless the enclosure is huge (like dozens of hectares). I remember seeing some chimps in a small enclosure in a zoo...and I couldn't look. I looked at one of them in the eyes, and I could just feel his/her mix of boredom/depression/frustration/indignation. No wonder they fling feces at the onlookers. How would you like to be gawked at your whole life in a prison? It's the same feeling for them.

Now penguins on the other hand, no worries, lock all the penguins up I don't care about them.

I love how everything is close to human behaviour: the brother/sister who plays a joke on you, the parent who comes to rescue and how the malefactor quickly runs away.

Is one of the adults even pushing him/her away from the scene?

When I saw this, I thought it was a joke at first, because the words were pretty meaningless. I wonder if this is one of those things like when people claim to hear words in music that aren't really there?

Because once you hear the back story, then the "language" sort of made sense. But before I saw the back story, it was just gibberish to me.

I'm deaf, my daughter has learned sign, shes 4. I know several other CODA (children of deaf adults) kids. The signing makes sense when I look at it like "young child" signing, and CODA kids with more sign than speech exposure sign a LOT like this, until theyre older and put real sentences together. The parent has to work very carefully to learn the child's pidgin sign and context clues - they often use similar signs for many things like bird for fly. I have no doubt that the researchers who have worked with these gorillas have a good relationship with them that builds their understanding of their subject's language, just like a deaf mother can interpret her one or two year old's very vague signs.

this is my daughter signing at 11 months old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMqPdGdNjF4

Having read Dr. Patterson's work and studied ASL, I've always thought the Michael story seen here was a very weak example of great ape communication. It does seem subjective. However, I hope that doesn't put you off of the idea completely. I'd encourage you to read up a bit on ASL (it's a completely separate language from English and sometimes fluent ASL will literally be MOUTH TOOTH BAD PAIN or something similar that seems terribly poor in English).

[–]gekk00 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't remember source, but i think i heard something along the lines of basically there is so much openness to interpretation of Michael/Koko's signing by the handler to call in to question the their ability to actually communicate....

Found this article from the skeptical enquirer (1998) here see "APE LANGUAGE IN DOUBT"

It's because chimps cannot swim, their bones are too heavy, they don't float, the chimp parents are just very aware of this and don't want the baby to drown.

All mammals are capable of swimming.

Edit: Upon further research it appears as though the Rhinoceros may not be able to swim. Giraffes are thought to be able to.

[–]kindashitty 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chimps can and do swim. Four legged animals are naturally buoyant because of their stance. Their mass and surface area is parallel to the water surface. But most important their noses stay above water allowing them to breathe naturally (helping buoyancy). Animals that walk upright have a much more difficult time maintaining buoyancy and therefore a natural fear of water often times needing examples or instruction on how to swim. Chimps can easily wade through water, but tend to stay away from it.

That bone shit is nonsense and wouldn't matter, same as the body fat excuse. Their fear of water comes down to their shape.

[–]8abug 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly how many kinds mammals do you know of that regularly walk on two legs? Chimps can't swim - original comment is correct. When they have to, they can wade through shallows but water is not something that they seem to enjoy

[–]kindashitty 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why don't you do some fucking research. some chimps can even swim underwater. it all has to do with stance. bone density is the dumbest shit i ever heard. how dense is the steel of a cruise ship?

[–]downvotesmakemehard 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Stance" has zero to do with it. You'll float vertically as well as horizontally. Stop talking out of your asshole.

Many other primates as well. I believe there is a species that often create actual economies based on grooming each other. A type of baboon will kidnap puppies from wild dogs in Africa, and domesticate them to help with hunting for meat ( I've heard this a few times but have never seen an actual source). And of course, we know gorillas can learn to understand human language and can communicate via sign language.

Face it. We are monkeys. Monkeys are us.

It's interesting that no matter how intellectual we are, our reactions in times of utter fear and worry are the exact fucking same as every other animal.

[–]robertodeltoro 41 points42 points ago

I don't really see how that's not the intellectually appropriate reaction to an infant falling in the water.

I find it crazy how fast they react to the little one. Humans would just walk by and hope someone else would deal with the problem.

When I was young (second grade) my family lived in a place where a creek bordered our back yard. It was pretty shallow and not very fast moving, but nonetheless cold. One day, we were all out in the yard and suddenly, I saw my little brother crouched right at the edge of the creek looking onto it. I tried to resist, but a compulsion greater than any I had ever known overcame me. I watched myself, fascinated, as if from afar, as I sneaked up behind him and, without hesitation, pushed him in. Head over heels. Sploosh. He was not happy. Mom came running. I was helpless with laughter and dread, knowing there could be no possible excuse and also knowing that whatever came next, it was completely worth it.

The very next thing I am going to do is send him this link. Many, many thanks.

Maybe it's because I'm a big brother but I took the video as Random guy pushes you in the water, then big bro comes to snag you out.

So I've been watching this thing over and over and I can not figure out where the monkey that pushed the other monkey goes when the parents come swoop the wet monkey up. He takes a step back, gets low with his hands behind his head then disappears as the mommy/or daddy(can't really tell) steps over him

[–]Philosophile 1 point2 points ago

It runs up behind the scooping ape, and when the scooper starts to cradle the pusher runs behind the rightmost ape and off-screen. You can see it if you watch it keeping that in mind, I'm sure.

My older brother pushed me into a (very large) puddle.

Then him and his friends made fun of me for falling in the puddle? THERE WAS NO FALLING I WAS PUSHED.

Between the ages of 3 and 7, whenever I was near a water fountain / pond I would fall in. I'm not sure if it was because my older brother getting me to walk near the edge and I would stumble in due to imbalance or if it was because my older brother getting me near the edge and pushing me in.

This is terrible, but I was expecting that monkey to either fall off a large cliff or get eaten by a crocodile as he was trying to get out of the river.
