Also try it with one eye closed and then flicker back and forth when the time is up. You're brain will throw a fit!

When you stare at a color too long, the cones in your eyes get worn out. When your gaze shifts to a neutral color (or the .gif does it for you in this case), the natural reaction is to make you see roughly the opposite color to refocus the cone.

The classic example of this is of a green, black and orange America flag. Stare at it long enough then look at a white surface and the afterimage will be red, white and blue.
