It makes the fish uncomfortable too. Put a filter and pump in that thing! Or better still, get a decent sized fish tank.

No, I think they would prefer to be in an aquarium that is an appropriate size for its species, with a filter and heater to keep water conditions stable. ಠ_ಠ

edit: a goldfish in a bowl like in the pic would eventually poison itself with its own shit, then it would die from the chemical burns or suffocate from insufficient oxygen.

It should because a goldfish should have an actual tank with a filter and 10 gallons minimum of water(ideally 20 gallons). Not even a betta should be put in there because despite their claim to fame of living in small bowls, they enjoy having clean water to swim around in.

Edit: Clarified units

The rest of the world uses SI and in SI g means gram as in kilogram.

[–]peet200 -1 points0 points ago

Yes that's exactly what I said, the rest of the world use litres from SI to determine water capacity. You just repeated my words...

[–]crewe-dave 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

UK still uses gallons - Imperial gallons (4.546l) as opposed to the US with their US gallons (3.785l).

Which presumably means, as a gallon has 8 pints, a US pint is smaller than an Imperial (UK) pint.

THATS why American recipes don't work..not only do I have to fight CUPS for Heavens sake even your liquid measures are wrong.

And you can't cook in metric - it just feels wrong.

[–]puterTDI 0 points1 point ago

Had an eel for a while that I would feed live food.

Also had a blue lobster that decided the angel fish in the tank should be live food. My thinking was that it wouldn't be fast enough to catch the angel...I was wrong.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Why should a person get a hamster if they don't intend to care for it properly? Because it's a small, furry animal that vibrates when it's frightened and pops neatly and quietly into an adult's rectum.

So. There's that.

[–]PostalPenguin 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are fish as cognizant or smart as a dog? No. But if you want a happy and healthy pet goldfish you should put it in a tank that gives it enough room to swim around, explore, and exercise.

My GF has two goldfish in a 40 gallon tank with a large filter. The fish are active, curious and explore their tank constantly. They recognize her and will put on a show for food. Put the same fish in a bowl and they will sulk, get sick and eventually die.

[–]Quantumplation 1 point2 points ago

[–]Rehd 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Goldfish can actually get pretty large too. I had goldfish I bought for 10 cents each that were probably 1-2 inches long. A year later they were as long as 7 inches. Ended up selling them for more goldfish at like 10 bucks a pop to the same store I originally bought them from. A tiny bowl would not suffice for full growth needless to say.

[–]Antagony 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a living, breathing, autonomous creature with a brain (albeit relatively tiny), motor functions and a nervous system. Just because fish are not as highly developed as mammals, it doesn't mean they don't suffer. Fish suffer in the wild too of course, but that's not a valid argument for allowing people to deliberately subject them to suffering – especially if it's simply for the superficial purpose of providing a cheap ornament for the coffee table.

[–]ThePiemaster -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do real about killing cockroaches? Or trees?

[–]Antagony 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um, what has "killing" got to do with anything in my post? I was talking about not inflicting unnecessary suffering on other living creatures by forcing them to live in unhealthy confined environments; nothing whatsoever to do with killing.

But to answer your question: I feel exactly the same about killing fish – which I do eat and am perfectly at ease to kill for that purpose, by the way – as I feel about killing any living creature: it's sometimes necessary but I'd prefer it not to be done in a cruel manner.

[–]MeinLiebling 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those feeder goldfish you see in the petstores? They get BIG. Goldfish also constantly eat and poop. You can fit that feeder in a small tank, but it will choke itself in there. It'll run out of oxygen, and ammonia build-up will kill it. A goldfish needs a twenty gallon tank because its organs will continue to grow, and if you stunt its growth you run the risk of having your fish just rupture, asphyxiate, blah blah blah...

[–]werddrew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just saying, kids have ALWAYS had storebought goldfish that have lived for YEARS kept in tiny little tanks. I get the "goldfish should have wonderful and beautiful environments to live full and happy lives" argument, but I don't buy the, "They'll starve and suffocate to death in two months" argument.

[–]MeinLiebling 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That store-bought goldfish that reached a couple of inches over those couple of years should have reached twelve inches. And its organs are betting on growing that much. Putting it in a small tank, regardless of whether or not you clean the water, is a death sentence.

[–]werddrew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This doesn't jive with reality. The reality that I can put a goldfish in a bowl and have it live there for years. I'll grant you that it may not be as long or as full in a larger tank, but it's not months.

[–]MeinLiebling 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Assuming you know what you're doing when it comes to keeping the water clean. It doesn't mean the fish isn't in the equivalent of a prison cell. Without breaks throughout the day.

[–]zgh5002 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a bowl, it can live for years. In a tank? Decades.

[–]vetalavalo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most people don't realize that goldfish can generally get upwards of 12" in captivity and can live for over 20 years in the right conditions. The largest goldfish on record was 19". So if you have more than one, which most people do, I would say a 10-20 gallon tank would be a minimum as long as you were planning to upgrade to a larger tank as the fish grew.

[–]FerrignosGlutes -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You aren't alone, I think some people get a bit carried away with pet care. Most people don't give a shit about farm conditions but will make a stir about a fish in a small bowl or an outdoor dog. Priorities I spose.

I've had Cichlid tanks and tropicals for years. Never heard of putting a goldfish in anything but a bowl or a small tank. Koi on the other hand will get huge in a pond. the goldfish in my pond have always stayed miniature, and I winter them over in a classic "goldfish bowl".

[–]Iamsanta 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you've already got goldfish don't worry about it, they won't grow any bigger I'm afraid. My sister gave me her little fat-arse fantail one. I'm not sure how large they can grow, but it hasn't changed. It does love chasing laser-pen dots though

[–]Iamsanta 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well they are "spoiled". They summer in the pond with lilies, and winter in a pass through window to my dining room, where they provide much entertainment to my cat.

Many of the fancy styles are stunted through selective breeding side effects. Those black moor bubble-eyed hi-fin, etc. goldfish have generally short lifespans and health.

Thanks. Well, it won't grow but it seems to be a happy little idiot :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago*

Goldfish can grow up to 12 inches and are filthy sods that produce tonnes of ammonia. Around 60-70 litres is usual to keep a goldfish happy, depending on the breed. They won't grow full size unless they've been raised from fry in a large environment, or moved to larger containers as they grow

[–]ehorgan 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That fish will slowly die in that tank. There is not enough surface area for the water to exchange oxygen with the surrounding air.

That tank is cruel and should never be sold/used.

[–]aurulieus 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just keep thinking if the goldfish went to the other side of the bowl and then swam as fast as it could ramming into the falling side, it'll just topple over.

The way the stones are sitting in the bottom of the tank makes me think that the picture was taken at an angle. If so, the tank seems a lot less precariously placed than would appear. I guess either that or the stones were placed while the tank was sitting on a flat surface and they did not shift when it was moved. The water should be the deciding factor but I'm having a hard time telling from that picture.

It's seem to me that the imgur image bot is unethical. You are stealing other peoples images to host them on imgur, using bandwidth issues as some kind of reasoning. It doesn't seem right.

That's given me a great idea - I'll write a bot that rehosts images on imgur and posts them as a new thread with a title of "it's shit like this"

Soon all the karma will belong to me!

Just grab links directly from imgur-mirror-bot's overview page, you won't even have to do any code for working with imgur's API.

For example here's the bot's overview in json form

I think it makes sense. Often the traffic from reddit can take down small sites if the link gets popular.

Better than making me download a fucking picture on the internet just to look at it.

"stealing other people's images"? How is it stealing them? It provides a mirror and nothing more. Go bitch at the people who grab random images off the internet and pretend they took it.

it provides a mirror page with ads on it...

...which nobody will click unless the original link stops working. Reddit does crash websites with heavy traffic on occasion.

[–]beanso 1 point2 points ago

It also provides the direct link...

Oh sure, "mirroring" without permission is not stealing?

If you asked business webmasters if they want their stuff mirrored on a site that pops it's own ads instead of theirs, completely depriving them of any chance they have of generating revenue from their work, do you really think they would all go for it?

That's really good business isn't it? "Oh no... I'm not stealing your potential for revenue, I'm just -mirroring- your images on my own ad driven site just case your bandwidth pop...Just wanna help..."

You honestly can't see the con there?

"imgur-mirror-bot is a simple little bot that scans new reddit submissions for image links, and provides a mirror to those images as a comment in the original post" from the imgur-mirror-bot FAQ's

That's like a fancy minimalist luxury apartment for a goldfish. The "Movin' on up" theme from the Jeffersons is literally playing in my head right now and will NOT SHUT UP. Thanks reddit.

The strain of Endlers Livebearers I have are extinct in the wild. The Rocket killifish I breed prevent the rare, wild caught, fish from dying in the thousands while being shipped from Sierra Leone

They both have large well planted tanks with good water quality. Killifish (especially the annual species) will spend their entire lives in the water filled footprints of animals, and Endlers live in water with so much alagae that visibility is in inches. An aquarium is much larger than the normal habitat for Killifish, and the Endlers have more visible room than in their natural habitat.

I'm hoping that someday hobbyists like me can re-introduce these species into the wild.

Other hobbyists have been breeding Clownfish in captivity in order to keep the reef living fish from being taken from the wild. This keeps dangerous collecting methods from being used and also gives hobbyists a hardier source for livestock. Reef fish in particular tend to claim a small patch of coral and rock as their own, so tend to do very well in tanks with good water quality. Additionally they tend to have longer life spans than in the wild.

I once had a snowflake eel, I bought him around 20 years ago. It lived to be 12; this is much longer than your typical snowflake lives to be in the wild. I've heard of eels living to be 20 or older however so this wasn't a fluke.
