When I was a kid I used to collect the shells and have cicada army wars against Transformers or Mask figurines or whatever. That, and praying mantis death matches in a glass jar kept me mused for hours. But I am Australian....

I love these buggers! Well, I did until one of them bit me... :/

Side note: Cicadas drink the sap from trees and are not terribly bright. While they don't intentionally attack people, it's easy for them to confuse a finger with a tree branch and jab their sucking straw into you by mistake. TMYK :)
