I love this. It's amazing how they grow higher up (or lower) and then migrate into place as the deciduous ones fall out. And then bone fills in!

I agree, I think it's actually fascinating, but then again, I'm slowly desensitizing myself to medical images that would make others squeamish. The other thing I wonder, is if like your kid get's punched by some other jerk kid, and fractures an adult tooth on the way, what happens then? Does your kid sprout a fractured tooth? Will it still repair on the way up?

I'm guessing if a child were struck that hard they would not survive.

I had a high fever when one of my permanent teeth was forming and it came in with a rough surface texture. It was one of my canines on the bottom.

[–]Bemyescape817 1 point2 points ago

Me too. Only my teeth look like they are cracked. They have dark lines running through them. I had xrays taken and my teeth are internally shattered from having the fever and you can see the cracks but my enamel is strong enough to keep them together. Damn fever. I was in the hospital for a week with like a 107 fever

Data sample of 1, here. Had a nasty bike accident at age 4 and lost 6 teeth out of 4 slots. The two adult teeth were perfectly formed, so in my case, anyway, whatever connected them to the skull was much weaker than the teeth themselves.

Financial planning note- if this happens to your kid, go to the orthodontist, get an estimate for braces and bridgework that will be required in 14-15 years when he/she stops growing, and submit it to your insurance company immediately.

I got kind of curious about this and did some minor digging. Pure unscholarly, second-hand (from me) info for you here. The low mass of their jaw combined with the bone elasticity and fat tissue tend to make mandibular fractures very uncommon, but they are still the most common facial fracture for kids. If it's not a direct hit to the jaw though, the weight distribution of the skull makes their forehead take the majority of the brunt of anything.

Being the father of a little girl who is currently teething, I think i'll be a little bit more understanding if she wakes up crying in the middle of the night. Either that or I'll barricade myself in my room in case she comes looking for me!

Not me. I was not born with permanent teeth for my bottom 2 front teeth. They did not fall out until I was 20 and then I got some fake ones.

[–]g00d 5 points6 points ago

No idea. On my first trip to a dentist when I got the news I was devastated. I was a 4 year old deformed mutant.

Bad news is my insurance would not cover it and I had to pay out of pocket. It was listed as cosmetic procedure even though I was born without the teeth. Also had to lose the adjoining teeth to create the bridge.

[–]whatevesbro 0 points1 point ago

Genetics happen. Heredity is most frequently responsible for congenital absence if teeth. It's a form of hypodontia. In other words, there's a good chance mom or dad are missing one or more of their permanent (adult) dentition. The most common missing teeth are the wisdom teeth, so most people aren't aware that they may be passing on these genes to their kids. The reason g00d retained those teeth for so long, is because without permanent teeth to replace them, the roots of those baby teeth remained intact instead of resorbing. And without root resorption baby teeth usually won't fall out on their own.

[–]TayRay420 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah my buddy didn't get any wisdom teeth at all.

Sister got hers taken out, they were impacted.

I have mine intact, never bothered me once.

I don't have wisdom teeth either, and for this I am thankful. I've heard how horribly painful they can be and surgery to remove them is no picnic.

I was born with 5 of my 'adult teeth' missing. They were never there. I'm now 18 turning 19 in December and I still have some of my milk/baby teeth in

[–]Ninja_Surgeon 0 points1 point ago

I'm missing four adult teeth, just got the last of my other teeth pulled a year ago (those suckers had some decent roots still too; almost growing in with the bone) and I'm getting work done with braces and stuff to fill the gaps. Theres hope for you to still get a nice perfect mouthful of teeth!

[–]mmraffe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mine were impacted, too. I had the bottom wisdoms and the two molars next to them removed (to be clear; one molar on each side).

I still have my top wisdoms (I'm 19).

[–]hellowren 3 points4 points ago

Um. Ok. Hold on.. here, I guess? The little one there is my baby tooth. I had a hard time losing them. For a long time I had one dangling by a piece of skin on my lower gum, and one stuck to the roof of my mouth that had been pushed back by the new tooth. I cut the first one off finally when I was like 13 and the latter one came off in one of those caramel apple lollipops (got stuck in caramel).

I have teeth problems :( but no insurance to do anything about it

Have you tried getting treatment through dental schools? They are very good at informing you of every treatment option available to you. Their prices are 40-50% cheaper than regular dentists, and they have different payment options. At least go in for screening and treatment planning appointments and get X-rays done. The whole thing should be about $60. Some students can push for certain treatments just for the sake of completing requirements, you could PM me your options and I can help you pick the most inexpensive, but effective treatment.

You sound like youre from WVU!

[–]Schmoopster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IUSD. But may I ask what made you think of WVU?

[–]aperfektrain 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just sounded very similar to the situation at WVU SoD. Patients get great comprehensive care at great prices as long as they don't mind the slow pace of treatment. I just always felt like sometimes patients got treatment geared toward getting what students needed more than what the patients needed. I went to WVU and got my D.D.S., btw.

[–]hellowren 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went to one of those schools here that offers cleaning and Xray services for $5 and got that done. That's how I found out it was a baby tooth. I asked the tech why that one was canine-like but the other was flat and bigger. She said something about how sometimes we favour one side when we chew and it just grinds down, then she saw my Xrays and was like O_O ok nevermind about that, that's a baby tooth!

I was able to get my cavities filled at an actual dentist, but it cost my grandparents a buttload of cash. I'm supposed to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed because my mouth is so tiny they are becoming impacted and are full of cavities.

The only thing is, getting my wisdom teeth out is going to be oral surgery (which terrifies me) and cost more money than anything else :( But that's the worst thing I need done, because I get headaches and mouthsores and stuff from the teeth coming in and rubbing my cheek raw.

[–]Schmoopster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might have cheaper options available to you. Sounds like you're within a dental school. Call their Oral Surgery department and ask if they extract impacted wisdom teeth at the school. Most often they will have another Oral surgery clinic on campus where you will find OS residents working, and dealing with more complicated extractions, such as impacted wisdom teeth. You should also ask about their appointment procedures and payment options. The reason you should ask this is because some of them are walk-in only, and they see patients on a first-come-first-serve basis. In that case you should plan on getting there first thing in the morning, and you may have to pay upfront. Also, another caveat is that they will not put you under general anesthesia, and they will extract one tooth only, so you'll have to go back and repeat the process. And make sure to say you're in pain because most of these places only take emergency cases.
I'm getting embarrassed for my profession just typing all this out. There should be better options available out there for cases like yours. I know the whole process sounds awful and time consuming, I've been on both sides of it, but it may save you some money, and get rid of your discomfort. But shop around first and make sure that there is a significant price difference before you go in for that first extraction. Otherwise it's really not worth the massive hassle. Best of luck to you.

[–]hellowren 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I will definitely look into this. My only other problem is I'm scared to death of any anesthesia that requires me not being in my right mind (being "put under" or "the gas"). I don't mind novocaine or any of that kind of stuff, but I've never had surgery or anything so I'm terrified.

This is also why I don't take mind-altering substances such as hallucinogens or disassociatives[sic]. I don't like not being in control of myself :l

[–]Schmoopster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This would be much more common if so many kids weren't receiving Ortho treatment at an early age. In fact the most commonly impacted teeth are the Maxillary canines. Here are the two most common reasons:
A. Your upper arch length wasn't big enough and the anterior overcrowding messed up the eruption pathway of your canine. And the baby canine never fell out because the permanent one wasn't there causing root resorption of the primary canine.
B. Research suggests that impacted canines are associated with short rooted lateral incisors (one tooth over from the centals). It is the root of the lateral incisor that guides the permanent canine into place, so if the root is too short, the canine won't have a clear eruption pathway. But usually in these cases the canine becomes impacted and won't erupt at all.
Let me know if you need info regarding treatment options.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably A:

  • The same third molar hasn't erupted yet. I know it is there from x-rays.
  • My older sister had serious problems with overcrowding, to the point where they had to break the arch and extend it somehow to make room. I don't know if it was her mandible or maxillae, it was just called the jaw when it was happening and I haven't asked her about it since I started school.
  • The eruption of the permanent canine didn't bother me at all. Woke up one day and it was starting to poke out

And I have a question, I hope it doesn't seem too off the wall, i've just heard it brought up casually before:

Do you know of any research about vietnam vets and there exposure to the chemical warfare that could have caused birth defects in their children? My older sister had other problems as well (she was born without an ear or auditory canal, for one), but no one in my family recalls anyone else having problems like this. I have two younger siblings that haven't had any issues, either.

[–]Schmoopster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would strongly recommend reading through this. Keep in mind, not every birth anomaly is presented on the list. For your sister, you should look into microtia or anotia depending on the severity of her birth anomaly. I hope this can answer some of your questions.

Never seen a photo of a skull with the jaw cut out to expose the growing teeth. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a genetic anomaly to have grown two different sets of those "everlasting" teeth that should last a life time. Don't know how my mouth would have looked like if I didn't have surgery, if they would have just fallen into place naturally or made my mouth look like a scene from jaws...but now it's a near perfect lineup of pretty teeth.

EDIT: I think I'm the only person on the planet that I know of, to be able to carry 8 "everlasting" teeth around that are my own...AND have every teeth intact in my mouth that are supposed to be there.

As a doctor, I can say I have been on the inside of a child and know very well what it looks like.

Please, for the love of whatever the fuck you care about, stop posting this.

Not because it's a re-post. Just because it disturbs me for days.

It's the first time I have seen it, and it is fascinating. So I am very happy you did. I don't know why people get so uptight about reposts, or why you are being downvoted for apologising.

I guess maybe there's no need to apologise.
