We used to own lots of these guys. At one point we had about 6 of them. The females have some of the most pathetic parenting skills I've ever seen in an animal. Making nests in 25foot up tanks, abandoning chicks that can't keep up when they jump over fences (hint: pretty much all of them & don't worry, we took reunited them every damn time.) etc etc.

The males are very non-picky when it comes to mates. Large white bucket? They'd tap that. Bag of bird feed? Again and again. Chicken? Depends how fast. They also make some pretty loud shaking noises when they put up their tail display, which often surprised visitors.

They make excellent guard animals for a farm. Never lost one to foxes or anything like that. Could make enough noise to wake you up from 100m away if anyone was around at night. Much better than our dogs.

They liked to spend a lot of time up on our tin roof, running about and flying off of it. When they dashed along a part, from inside it sounded like a grown man sprinting up there.

Oh and the feathers. So many feathers. We collected hundred and hundred over the years. My mum weaved some of them into a net thing that covered the ceiling in one of the lounge-rooms. For some reason nearly everyone seems to think they are bad luck or some crap like that, so we couldn't even give them away. At least the ceiling net thing kept the crazies out of the house.

Which reminds me of the 10+ times the damn peacocks/hens managed to sneak in an open door. Maybe another time.

They seem to be horrible flyers as well. I once accidentally startled one in the park. It tried to fly up an oak tree.

It took three false starts before it got airborn. Then it hit practically every branch on the way up. That caused it to be so dazed that when it finally settled on a branch it lost balance and fell back down. Again hitting every branch on the way down.

Then it scuttled unsteadily into the bushes. Couldn't help but laugh.

We used to have peacocks at the zoo in my city who would hang out around the Jaguar exhibit (the most popular exhibit) and the bathrooms so that they had optimal chances of assaulting people. I think they had to remove the peacocks for that reason

    Apart from helping out the chicks sometimes, we never had to care for them in any way at all. Somehow they just ate what was around. As for pets, we had a bunch of dogs, cats and other birds. Mostly all of those learnt to avoid them, except one cat who liked to try sneaking up on them

      Had some here and they are extremely aggressive, and as beautiful as they are they are NOT kid safe. If you ever owned a goose or have ran into a wild turkey, there about that bad and have no problem chasing people. More aggressive than most mean dogs.

      Peacocks are the loudest, most ridiculous sounding birds ever. One of my dad's neighbors had a pen with about 5 or 6 of them at his house. We used to shoot bottle rockets over his yard and they would go APESHIT and yelp for like half an hour. Funniest thing I've ever heard.

          So can chickens. I got a call from the police saying I could be brought up on animal cruelty charges. I joked on myspace about throwing a chicken off a parking garage or out of a plane to see how well they can fly. A PETA ex-gfl called the police and reported me. I kept telling the cop that not only was it a joke, but we're talking about a bird. If you throw a bird off a building, it will fly away!           Right, but I wasn't asking them to migrate while laden with a coconut. The whole thing came about from a lunch conversation at my friend's little cafe that had some roosters. I mentioned how I learned that chickens could fly while living in Kauai, which is covered with the pests. I wondered how well they could fly. We were both pilots and told the girl we wanted to capture one of her chickens to test it's flight capabilities. First with a test flight off a 3 story parking garage. Then if successful, from a greater height out of a cessna. If both test flights were successful, a 3rd flight was planned from 10,000 feet.

          I got drunk one night and thought some of my pilot friend's would enjoy it, so I put it up on myspace. It's like they say, don't put your dick in crazy. I should've deleted PETA girl, hit the gym, and lawyered up. Instead I've secretly plotted to drop chickens from altitude on the ceremony if she ever gets married.

                      They are loud, dirty, annoying creatures. Someone in my old neighborhood had a couple mating pairs, and basically let them roam free over the whole area. They would make those super loud screech-calls early in the morning, peck at stuff in the garden, and shit everywhere.
