Can't wait to use it on all the blurry bigfoot pictures.
[–]Fictional_Lincoln 158 points159 points160 points 10 months ago
Won't work. Bigfoot actually is blurry.
[–]the_mattador 86 points87 points88 points 10 months ago
I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry, and that's extra scary to me. There's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside. Run, he's fuzzy, get out of here.

[–]flybyknight 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I used to like his comedy. I still do, but I used to too.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
True. The photo is clear but Bigfoot is always blurry. That way, no one can figure out the urban legend.
[–]PasswordOptional2 20 points21 points22 points 10 months ago
It's not urban. It's a forests' legend!
[–]cdcformatc 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Rural legend?

My first language is not English, pardon me. Thank for the correction tho.
[–]everfalling 28 points29 points30 points 10 months ago
i don't think it'll work. AFAIK the technology deals with motion blur as opposed to focus blur.

Am I the only one who sees a man in a gorilla suit?
[–]mattdawg8 163 points164 points165 points 10 months ago
No, because that's exactly what it is.
[–][deleted] 58 points59 points60 points 10 months ago
I saw some bullshit show that claimed the way Bigfoot, in this footage, walked and turned would be impossible for a man to duplicate. But then they used software to steady the footage so you can see it without the shakiness and you can see clear as day that it's just some dude in a bad gorilla suit.

[–]bigfootlive89 10 points11 points12 points 10 months ago
Any idea how to make that?
[–]username103 47 points48 points49 points 10 months ago
Or for you, just skip to step 3.
[–]alexanderwales 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
If you're asking how they steadied it, all you need to do is take the things that are static (like the trees) and line up each frame so that the static things are in the same place.
[–]elmassivo 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Am I seeing this right? Does the gorilla suit have boobs on it?
[–]username103 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Looks like it, yes.
[–]RobotMafia 46 points47 points48 points 10 months ago
Bigfoot, is that you? I'm not like the others, Bigfoot. I see through the monster coating to the gentle loner inside. I bet you have a wounded raccoon friend that you tenderly nurse back to health while you go, "Rooh! Rooh!" But in the end they shoot you, but you teach us about things.
[–]LLFoolJ 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
I have the droppings of someone who saw Bigfoot?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Bigfoot, you taught yourself English.

It was probably deblurred using a deconvolution filter, the Wiener deconvolution filter for example would probably work in this case. It's usually pretty easy to deblur a picture when you know exactly what happened to blur it, and/or have an excellent approximation of the Point Spread Function of the instrument that made the image.
[–]cecilpunk 185 points186 points187 points 10 months ago
Hehe Wiener

[–]LastInitial 26 points27 points28 points 10 months ago
Exactly. Also, it doesn't fix pictures that aren't in focus. Completely different issue.
[–]rask 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
I'm a relative n00b when it comes to DSP, but why wouldn't this work on an out of focus image? Wouldn't such an image just be the result of a different PSF?
[–]jobotslash[] 9 points10 points11 points 10 months ago
Out of focus blur turns edges fuzzy, motion blur doesn't do that. It takes the focused image and is blurred due to photographer motion, you still have the original image in focus. Er, I thought I was gonna be good at explaining this... but I don't think it worked out so well.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Exactly. With motion blur the information is there to manipulate and extract. For focus blur, the information simply isn't there.
[–]obobo 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Roughly, yes, an out of focus image just has a different PSF. How well a deconvolution algorithm works is dependent on the characteristics of the PSF, though (as well as characteristics of the image itself). As a trivial example, if the PSF smears each pixel out over the entire image, you can't do anything. As I recall (though it has been a while), it helps considerably to have a sharp "core" to the PSF, and / or sharp edges in it. Roughly speaking, Kurtosis helps.
For motion blur, I would think that the PSF is essentially a line, with pretty defined edges on it. That seems like a relatively straightforward thing to deconvolve.
[–]PatDaRat 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
I think what's impressive about the technology is its ability to accurately approximate the point spread function through processing the image itself.
[–]heterologician 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Approximating the PSF for motion/camera shake blur is quite difficult. It is a subject of very active research. Source: I work in this field and I've read papers on this topic with Adobe employees among their authors.
[–]floor-pi 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
It's funny how concepts leak out of academia into the commercial world and everyone goes crazy about it. There's an algorithm to do this very thing in my 10 year old undergrad computer vision book.
Edit: There could be alot more to this than i understand, though
[–]snookums 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
You just reminded me of a case a few years ago where a pedophile was caught by the police after he posted a picture online with a standard twirl distortion to hide his face. The police just loaded it up into photoshop and reversed the twirl effect. Priceless.

[–][deleted] 107 points108 points109 points 10 months ago
Only works on motion blur, and only if the motion factor isn't too extreme.
[–]complex_reduction 99 points100 points101 points 10 months ago
OP is a pretty seriously blurred photo. Unless you're trying to de-blur photos you took while falling down the side of a cliff it seems pretty damn handy.
[–]marsneedstowels 54 points55 points56 points 10 months ago
Shiiiii... oh lemme get my camera this'll net me some serious karma... iiiiiiiiit...
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Make sure it's a GoPro, we'll print the pics for your funeral.
[–]odd84 35 points36 points37 points 10 months ago
It's blurred but it's blurred in a specific way. It won't deblur unfocused pictures. It works by trying to calculate the motion of the camera that caused the blur; if you know that, you know what pixels are averages of the colors at what points in the unblurred photo, and you attempt to undo that averaging to get the original colors.
[–]gbk 9 points10 points11 points 10 months ago
Another example from the Adobe blog, you can see it doesn't work well for certain images lacking in detail.
http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/files/2011/10/sarah-dog.png
[–]ForwardTwo 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Not that it's lacking in detail, the algorithm just can't detect two different methods of blur. If you're a professional though, I really doubt you'll ever hit that many different blur angles.
[–]InMySecretLife 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Slight blur might actually be harder to detect/correct than drastic blur like the example.
[–]Boko_ 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Only works with linear motion. (It basically just corrects the position of colours to be aligned with like colours through a calculation of the motion and direction)
It becomes even more complicated when the position of those colours are variable to the original position and other blur colours relative to it are not aligned in a linear fashion.
..But apparently it IS possible.
[–]casc1701 51 points52 points53 points 10 months ago
It does not work in every single case and it's not ABSOLUTELLY PERFECT? CRAP, TOTAL CRAP, FUCK OFF, ADOBE, Come back when you have something usefull.
[–]palparepa 35 points36 points37 points 10 months ago

[–]ReleaseThePenguins 10 points11 points12 points 10 months ago

[–]xyroclast 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Makes sense. Regular blur is true loss of information, and I don't think a program would be able to guess what was missing, unless it knew what the objects in the photo were.
[–]scoobyduped 59 points60 points61 points 10 months ago

[–]Fafigunigen 19 points20 points21 points 10 months ago

[–]bpbear 18 points19 points20 points 10 months ago*
This only affects Motion blur. Not bad focus.
Fixing focus would be near impossible to automate. Since your focus is based on depth/z-axis, its a plane that is not visible to a 2dimensional image, so there is no real helpful dataset to analyze to resolve the bad focus. Also, important variables as the amount of iris blades, their curvature, distortion if you're using wide, etc also come into play.
De-MotionBlur is cool, but its really nothing new, most compositing programs have been able to do tracking for years, and you can use the tracking data to stabalize footage. What we have here, is essentially Photoshop analyzing tracking points on a single image to figure out a cameras shake/movement and using that information to resolve it.
[–]heterologician 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Identifying "tracking points" in a blurry image about which you have no prior information strikes me as a rather nontrivial task.
It's assumed to be possible in the near future (stated somewhere by Adobe apparently.. someone else in these comments had a link to it).

There's something suspicious about that blur. I've actually spent a few years doing digital cleanup on images and I don't think I've actually seen a blur that looks like that. It seems processed.
[–]skitzor 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
we will find out on release I guess. their demo of content aware fill was pretty impressive, and that was awesome on release. going from that, I trust them to deliver results like this.
[–]zeritor 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Content aware fill I think requires the user to be smart and makes sure to limit the sample, do it in small chunks and not use too much in a single area. Someone with a keen eye can usually spot it otherwise because it just causes repeating patters in the image.
It's still impressive though.

Guys, I think Adobe's on a mission to ruin all our CSI jokes. :( What next? Enhancing chain of reflections?
[–]tregota 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Shut up and etc. As a shaky cam master, if this makes me able to take usable photos without a tripod I'll worship Adobe forever.
[–]silveraw 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
WTF? You waste it on a shopping mall? Break out the bigfoot photos!
[–]lamqta 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Next thing you know, you'll be able to track someone's IP address by creating a GUI.
[–]rhetoricalanswer 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
The real application of this will be to build it into cameras and allow longer exposures without tripods, making flash photography semi-obsolete.
[–]Aeetlrcreejl 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Am I the only one who thought that "Adobe DeBlur" was some sort of French name?
[–]MirrorLake 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
There's literally thousands of digital photos that I have deleted because of motion blur like this. WHAT HAVE I DONE?
[–]CCMSTF 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I'm pretty sure unbaptized children are being sacrificed in a dark temple somewhere underground. Not that I care, this is so worth it.
May the UFO debunking begin.
[–]EyeballSandwich 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
does anybody know where this shot was taken?

Is this Quincy Market in Boston?
[–]Vyle8 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I get the feeling this will work as effectively as smart fill or smart transform. Works when you don't need it all that much, fails catastrophically when you could really use it.
They are taking a properly lit and exposed photo with some very uni-directional motion blur and fixing it. I'll be really impressed when it's a low light photo with lots of noise.

solution to japanese porn?
[–]thebrandon 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Does this mean that one could, theoretically, watch Asian porn unblurred?
[–]getondachoppa 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Pssh, probably only works on a Mac...
[–]AdamLynch 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Adobe's De-blurr tech + Lytro's tech that doesn't require pictures to be focused = Photoshop CS6 will be beastly.

[–]stansp 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Was I the only one who said 'DeBlur' in a French accent - like La Fleur in Dodgeball - before realising it was meant as it really should be?
