A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I never thought the area I live would be on reddit, I live 15 minutes from weeki wachee. We've got tons of other springs besides this all over the place.

[–]they_call_me_dewey 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah... this picture kind of loses its sting once you know that they use this spring to do a super tacky mermaid show. You can see the castle in the spring near the top right of the picture.

[–]alizarincrimson 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was very small, National Geographic did an article on Weeki Wachee with a nice picture of that show. As a direct consequence, I believed for years that real mermaids lived in Florida.

The knowledge of the tacky show came as a great disappointment to older me.

[–]godgoo 2 points3 points ago

What on earth are you talking about, it's the Only City Of Live Mermaids!.

[–]GaucheSesquipedalian 5 points6 points ago

Homosassa Springs just a bit to the North is way cooler. I think Buccaneer Bay lost it's luster when I was about 7. I swear they put ice cubes in that water to make it colder than every other spring in Florida. Also, I always thought the sketchiest slide there was the side-by-side one closest to the highway, until 2 people fell off the large corkscrew tube slide in one day, while I was there. FYI: The place looks way nicer in that picture than in real life.

[–]noitsapen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i actually prefer the Weeki Wachee river of Homosassa. Too much of Homosassa has been blocked off. It's just a shame both spring heads have been blocked off from the public and turned into attractions.

[–]GaucheSesquipedalian 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but as far as the attractions go, Homosassa is much nicer and is for a better cause. I feel it's downplayed as a park. Honestly, I don't really like either of those rivers. If I want to do some tubing or something I'll just go up to Chiefland for the Itchnetucknee.

[–]noitsapen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Homosassa is definitely the lesser of two evils. But the Weeki Wachee is still a far more natural river for kayaking. It all depends on what you are in to I suppose.

[–]Ocho8 4 points5 points ago

perhaps you guys should check out blue springs in orange county. pretty legit if you like to free dive.

[–]evildeliverance 3 points4 points ago

I've been to quite a few of the springs in the central Florida area and Ginnie Springs is hands down my favorite.

[–]jacobgold 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. Ginnie is amazing. Blue springs is just a hole. A very silty hole.

[–]plamb813 1 point2 points ago

Ginnie Springs is a hell of a party spot on holiday weekends as well. Cold water, kegs, and easy girls, my type of place.

[–]noitsapen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. Just googled it. I will have to check it out. I have dived quite a few springs on the west side.. never heard of this. Thanks.

[–]Ocho8 1 point2 points ago

Np, i love it, not very crowded and the water is crystal clear. be sure to take a picture of the sign for me if you can. i like to hold on to it when i free dive. happy diving.

I beg to differ D:< Weeki Wachee was the highlight of my summer when I went down to visit my Grandparents each year. My bother & I were allowed to choose one theme park outing each per seasonal visit & I ALWAYS chose WeekiWachee! It brings tiny girls immense joy so lay off! (And yes, I really chose WeekiWachee over Busch Gardens.. Disney World etc. I had been to most parks before & the mermaid show is the only thing I wanted to see again & again.)

[–]noitsapen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well then here are some personal photos of that river to hopefully restore some of the luster. But yeah you are right.. the attraction on the springhead is a disgrace.

[–]they_call_me_dewey 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been down the river a number of times, but there are only a couple stretches without subdivisions lining the river. It's a shame, really.

[–]noitsapen 3 points4 points ago

There is also a small pond right off HWY 50 just west of Oak Hill Hospital, that opens up to a huge cave that goes under the highway. If you look up at one point you can see a telephone pole coming thru the roof of the cave. Just something to think about next time you are driving down 50. Here is a map link

Crazy...16 years ago, my first job ever was helping make underwater props for this place. We made a giant clam shell and a dragon's head that opened so the mermaids could swim out of them. I wonder if they are still there.

This looks like one of my biggest fears in life. I have recurring nightmares about falling into the tops of aquarium tanks into giant bodies of water with all sorts of fish. This picture sent shivers down my spine.

They have good looking women doing a super tacky mermaid show in this spring. Turn that frown upside-down!

[–]NoStrangertolove 24 points25 points ago

Yeah, but they aren't the good kind of mermaid, with the fish top and the human bottom.

[–]TackyOnBeans 23 points24 points ago

Uhhh I'd much rather have hot lady on top and fish on bottom.

BJs forever and then she'd ask me for a money shot all over her eggs.

I mean those eggs would be dispersed in shallow slow moving water but still... egg shots!

Wow. You just brought back to me memories of similar dreams. I too have dreamed about falling into a large body of water, sinking to the bottom and when I couldn't breath any longer I took a breath. I didn't drown which was cool.

Another dream was me driving along the side of a water reservoir, my car slides into the water, I'm out of the car under water and there are millions of different sized fish.

It's the Sandia Laboratories Z Accelerator. Specifically it's the pool that holds the fusion reactor. IIRC in the instant it does that it's producing 80 times the amount of power that the world consumes in the same instant.

[–]Skid_Marx 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you have it backwards. It essentially changes up a giant capacitor and fires a pulse. The pulse, for its short lifetime, is 80 times the amount of power that the world's electric utilities can produce continuously. The Z machine isn't producing power, it's consuming it.

[–]no-mad 2 points3 points ago

I'm a Floridian as well. Been here my whole life. Anyone who's lived here and has traveled to a place where what I consider the "true" Floridians live....will know it's pretty damn scary. I've traveled quite a bit outside the state as well and I've never found people quite as unique. There's like a cultural topography to the Central/West coast with different cultures in different elevations. East coast may be a little different though.

I've been all up and down the rivers and springs of Western Florida. Gators have never bothered us a bit. Water moccasins on the other hand... we've had those chase our powerboat for quite a ways. They have quite a lousy temperament. EDIT: They've also chased us swimming, kayaking, canoeing, diving, and pretty much every other water sport. Freaky devils.

wakulla springs FTW. it's the largest freshwater spring in the nation (maybe the world). no cheesy attractions like mermaids. awesome swimming and the river connected to it is awesome for canoeing and kayaking. plus they're several other small hidden sinkholes in the surrounding area that are popular swimming spots.

There's a fairly large scout camp right down the road from here. It has at least four similar springs. We actually lost a scout in one a few years back :(

I have been to this place, and though it's a little run down, and a little on the hokey-side, it's amazing to see.

Also if you dig weird, old-school roadside attractions, this is THE place for you.
