Considering the universe is infinite, any point can be considered its center.

May as well be me.

[–]GringoDeMaio 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't want to spoil your line, but I don't think there is any consensus that the universe is infinite. My (admittedly rudimentary) understanding is that the universe is continuously expanding, which would imply that it is finite in size at any given moment (if it were infinite, how could it be expanding?).

[–]RequireMoreMinerals 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Like all red giants and hypergiants, VY Canis Majoris is so big because it has exhausted all the hydrogen fuel in its core, and has begun fusing hydrogen on a shell outside of a helium core. In fact, VY Canis Majoris is so big that it can fuse together helium, lithium, and so on, all the way up the periodic table to iron and beyond."

Hope that answers your question. :)

[–]DZ302 12 points13 points ago

I thought stars couldn't fuse Iron.

[–]Barrrrrrnd 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a feeling that star could fuse anythig it wanted, mainly because it could beat up all the other stars taht had a problem with it.

Seriously though, the size comparison here actually makes my brain hurt a little. Trying to conceptualize infinity is dumb, but for me trying to think of a star that is bigger than our solar system just boggles.

Not bigger than our solar system really. If placed where our sun is, the diameter of VY Canis Majoris would extend just outside Saturn's orbit. I am determining "size" only by diameters though. It would sit technically inside our solar system.

[–]Barrrrrrnd 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough, thanks for the actual info. The star itself would fit, but I would bet that it's zone of influence, e.g. Photoshpere/Chromosphere would be much larger still... crazy.

EDIT: I type faster than my brain moves.

[–]iongantas 1 point2 points ago

[–]JDlegendist 22 points23 points ago

After Iron, the amount of energy released is less than the energy required to undergo fusion, and so it isn't a stable process. http://i.imgur.com/G4qAa.jpg This explains a bit. The max of the curve is Iron. When the core of a star becomes Iron, the amount of energy being released is no longer enough to resist the gravitational forces trying to implode the star, and so it does that (slightly more complex but..), it implodes in a Supernova explosion. These enormous amounts of energy is want causes the Iron to fuse again into the heaviest elements such as Gold or Uranium. Hope this answers your question a bit.

[–]superfusion1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ok, now how do I mine that Gold so I can be richer than God?

[–]codefocus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can fund an asteroid mining mission to the Kuiper Belt tomorrow if you'd like.

For a few billion dollars you could make gold worth about a penny an ounce.

[–]superfusion1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hmm... good point. ok nevermind.

[–]hcwdjk 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Technically they can, but they won't get any energy out of it.

[–]OneVariable 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Iron is the highest element on the periodic table a star can fuse if I remember correctly. I don't remember exactly why, but it has something to do with the energy available within the atoms. In order to fuse elements above iron you need to gain energy, where as elements fused below iron give off energy.

[–]booOfBorg 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If they couldn't there would be no iron in the universe.

Edit: Some quantities of iron are also produced in supernovae, but most of it is created through nuclear fusion. Iron is the sixth most abundant element in the Universe.

I'm not sure if you're serious, but creation theory or no, this is our playground. Whether or not there is other intelligent lifeforms out there is immaterial in the face of such vastness. There is simply so much, for lack of a better word, space in space that we can consider all of it ours. The beautiful thing is that even when we claim it all, there is still more.
There are (probably) stars out there that are so far away that light from them and light from our star have not had time to meet yet. There are places in this universe that no human will ever know of, much less see with their own eyes. There are entire world, solar systems, galaxies so far away that we can't reach them before the heat-death of the universe. Specks of foam lost in the endless sea that is our universe. Specks of foam larger than anything we've ever known.

This place we live in is ours to see, and we will never see it all; never discover all of it's secrets. We are tiny, infinitesimal, but no less significant than VY Canis Majoris that impresses us so. Do you believe that that star is even close to the biggest thing, even in reachable space?

Now imagine that your fingernail is on such a grand scale that there are some that could not hope to comprehend it. The universe is big in any direction one cares to look, and I think that's beautiful.

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space, listen...

[–]Dakillakan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love your point, however there probably is an upper limit to the size of a star and Canis is pretty close, after that you collapse to a black hole. I am no physicist though, so it might be much larger.

[–]batshitinsane 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I want to agree, but why does part of me think that we're so arrogant to think that the universe revolves around us?

[–]The_Dirty_Carl 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It does, you just have to draw the orbits a little differently. It's all a matter of perspective.

Some say, "Look at the breadth of the visible universe. A quarter held at arm's length covers millions of entire galaxies, full of billions of stars; we are insignificant."

I say, "Sure, we're small. We are also young. Alexander, Charlemagne, Napoleon were all babes once. One could say, 'Look at this infant, he has done nothing. An insignificant speck.' But look at what they accomplished, those insignificant specks. Look how far we've come in the last two hundred years. We've gone from covered wagons to setting foot on another celestial body, sent our machinations to many others. Instantly, on an astronomical timescale. Our species has existed for less than an eyeblink, from the Sun's view."

Perhaps it isn't our size or power that makes us significant. Perhaps it is simply because we exist. We live, die, love, learn, rejoice, suffer. I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I matter.

Considering that all those stars and planets have the same elements and molecules that make up us and our Earth, that makes me feel rather large. As Neil deGrasse Tyson put it, "we are all connected to the universe atomically." Kinda cool, I don't prefer to think of myself as 'tiny,' and neither does my girlfriend...HEYO!

This just makes me want to die. There's no point. I will never be able to witness the amazing size of these things in a way that would make sense to me. :(

This is the only thing I really got from that gif. Because once the thought wormed its way into my head, the song was the only thing that I could think about.

The song...it haunts me...

I will never grasp it until somebody presents it in a way where I can compare every single on of these without scrolling or anything like that.

What would VY Canis Majoris look like in our so or system? With current orbits, which planets would be gobbled up? All of them?

I especially liked this bit from Wikipedia:

are there stars that are larger than these, but we havent observed because there to far away?

If we knew there were stars larger than these then we would have only come to that knowledge because we observed them.

And keep in mind the 3 dimensionality... It makes it seem even larger.

Things like this, astronomical distance scales, and age of the universe scales, really hammer home how small and unimportant we are.

If a spaceship left Earth travelling at the speed of light at the beginning of human history, it would just now have made it to the nearest galaxy, Andromeda. There are about 125 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

My mind will never comprehend the sheer magnitude of the Universe.

It's just never going to happen.

Sure, I can think, "Wow. That's big." But I'll never be able to understand just how much of an understatement that really is.

Hell, I have problems grasping just how big our own world is, let alone others.

There are all these places that I will never be able to go to, never be able to see, to stare at in wonder. This feeling... I can't describe it.
