How I feel about reposts (imgur.com)
submitted 12 months ago by 52flyingwhales
[–]orotoss 20 points21 points22 points 12 months ago
The real question is: do you upvote or downvote the repost?
[–]daiseikai 8 points9 points10 points 12 months ago
I usually just leave them be. It might be old material to me, but it's probably new to somebody else. It's hard to catch every post that comes through this place.
[–]bvanman 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago
Also, many screams of "THAT WAS JUST POSTED YESTERDAY!" are actually the case of a cross-post.
[–]PotentChili 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
I actually upvote it a lot of the time if it's a repost of something I enjoyed the first time seeing it. I like to browse Reddit drunk/high a lot and it's always great finding things like that again. If it's something that isn't too interesting to me, I won't downvote it, I'll just press "h" (hide) and be on my merry inebriated way.
[–]funkgerm 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
I usually vote on reposts based on how I voted on them when I first saw the original. Ideally I wouldn't vote at all, but then it won't autohide the link, and I can't be having any of that noise.
[–]sharp_knife 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
I have no idea why you're downvoted. You answered the question.
[–]aphoenix 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
You can just click on "hide".
I only bring this up because I do the same thing.
Yeah but my mouse is usually by the up/down arrows anyway
[–]aphoenix 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
That's a very good point. Making a slightly sleeker UI for this isn't a bad idea.
I think with a userscript this would be fairly easy - just take the "hide" button and relocate it into the negative-space H between the arrows.

[–]NoNeedForAName 26 points27 points28 points 12 months ago
Nice. Reminds me of this.
[–]hawk554 19 points20 points21 points 12 months ago
GOD DAMMIT! I clicked on both of them expecting something different....
[–]praybzers 7 points8 points9 points 12 months ago
You're the guy who looks at that picture "how to troll people" that's too blurry to read, squinting for 10 minutes trying to read it.
[–]gekk00 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
madness
[–]anonymousHacker 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
What a karmawhore, didn't even bother the reupload the pic, he used the same imugr.
[–]chocolatesandwiches 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
and this from a day before this was reposted.
[–]crazindndude 35 points36 points37 points 12 months ago
:) I like that face. Makes me feel so much better about things...he looks so content and satisfied with his life.
[–]ExogenBreach 13 points14 points15 points 12 months ago
He also looks clueless and mildly retarded.
[–]praybzers 4 points5 points6 points 12 months ago
the first time I ever saw that face was on 4chan and he was a down's syndromed child, while the other three panels were his raging family members.
[–]randomsnark 8 points9 points10 points 12 months ago
Yes.
[–]gekk00 11 points12 points13 points 12 months ago
theres something about that particular rage comic face which just makes me feel...happy and carefree
[–]mcartz33 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago
i'm pretty sure it's the eyes...they're so strange and awkwardly mesmerizing.
[–]Ragnalypse 41 points42 points43 points 12 months ago
why are rage faces so much more expressive than any previous artistic or iconic faces?
[–]Sahasrara 7 points8 points9 points 12 months ago
I think it's because they're very simple black and white images, and you can match every feature to the emotion you're looking for.
[–]TheDanishInquisition 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago
I think of this one as the zen trepanning guy.
[–]stefanocfb 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
So blank, with a true ignorant, yet blissful emotion.
[–]rb76543 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
i feel the same way about many but not all of them. for me, some of them don't work at all, but the ones that do, have that mona lisa thing going - it's very hard to explain the appeal, but it is very strong and undeniable.
on the other hand, i can't close the squinty eyed frye image fast enough, even though reddit nation can't get enough of it.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 12 months ago
The fry thing isn't really a rage face though
[–]rb76543 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
yeah, i know. i was changing the subject a bit :)
[–]Kingo_Of_Uranus 5 points6 points7 points 12 months ago
I like a lot of the rage faces, especially this one. However that aaaawwwwww yyyeeeaaahhhhh rage face can burn in the fucking bowels of hell for all eternity.
[–]rb76543 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
that's the one i had in mind, mainly.
[–]fepeee 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
Because that's how we roll.
[–]devosdk 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
Because the internet. Yes.
[–]mynameismark22 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
Yes. I feel posts complaining about re-posts are way more fucking annoying than the re-post themselves.
[–]schploing 46 points47 points48 points 12 months ago
I really wish I could upvote this more. Thanks guy/gal, have the only one I can give!

http://www.reddit.com/help/reddiquette
Don't: Announce your votes to the world. These predictable comments aren't terribly interesting and only contribute to the noise-to-signal ratio. More specifically, please refrain from saying, "Upvote." "Upvoted." "Upvoted for x." "Upvote for you, good sir." "I wish I had a million upvotes to give." "My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give."
Edit: Forgot to put "Don't" in the beginning of the quote.
Edit2: I'm assuming by the votes r/f7u12 r/reddit.com does not want to follow the reddiquette. Why?
[–]skyylineddrive 12 points13 points14 points 12 months ago
It's unnecessary to post the redditquette when someone was being nice and not harming anyone. It seems a bit prickish :/
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
Thank you for replying and I can understand why it would be rude but I did try and be civil as best I can instead of just resorting to whining. I feel like comments like his should not be upvoted because if all the comments on every post were "nice job I really like it" what would be the point of reading the comments?
Also if comment quality starts to degrade because people will refuse to acknowledge the reddiquette then it will spread to other the other subreddit because people will be under the impression that what is fine in one place is fine in all the other places on Reddit.
I would not like Reddit to be filled with trolls and people who don't add anything to the conversation so I try and point out poor comments when I see them so others can learn too. I now think some people refuse to learn.

edit: this was exactly what I was doing while reading all of this.
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc -8 points-7 points-6 points 12 months ago
I'm sorry I'm not sure what exactly you meant because you just left a link to a gif without saying anything. I assume you either are trying to express that you are confused about what I just wrote which I will have no problem explaining to you if you would like.
[–]Seedy-E 5 points6 points7 points 12 months ago
You're pretty high and mighty for an anonymous account
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc -5 points-4 points-3 points 12 months ago
Please explain? Also Reddit is limiting how fast I can comment because of all the downvotes so I can only comment once every 10 minutes now.
[–]TheNessman 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
I CANNOT Believe you have a lower score on this comment than the guy who posted that gif. that is ridiculous. yes there is a fine line in this case about the original two comments but i don't think at all you deserve to be downvoted for responding to someone who basically said "i'm ignoring you"
THAT, is a blatant violation of reddiquette.
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago*
I assume that when most people view comment threads such as this they see my original and the amount of downvotes it received and thus assume that I was downvoted for a reason and thus everything else I say should also be downvoted. As of this moment his comment has received more upvotes. Although I am glad he explained himself in the edit I don't see the reason why he would need to show everyone what he was doing while reading my comment. Just imagine if everyone did that.
i don't think at all you deserve to be downvoted for responding to someone who basically said "i'm ignoring you"
The way people downvote is incredibly inaccurate to how it was intended. The downvote arrow was intended to be used to discourage spam or trolling. So comments that don't add anything to the discussion/ ads/ or troll comments should be the only things being downvoted unless stated otherwise in the Reddiquette. But because users see only an arrow pointing down and have no information as to why it is there they assume the downvote arrow is the same as pressing dislike. This often leads to opposing minority views that might even be stronger then majority views being downvoted leading to places like r/politics being a one sided subreddit.
I have said before the worst promblem with Reddit is how users vote. If users upvote posts that violate rules either on Reddit or in the rules in whatever subreddit it is in then other users will see that and assume that is what belongs on Reddit or the subreddit and continue that behavior. It is all a slippery slope.
~~ Also sorry If this is filled with poor grammer but I'm a bit tired so I'm going to be lazy and not do an immediate grammer check.~~
Edit: Did a grammer/ coherence check and fixed any errors I saw. While my grammer is still shit I hope I made my comment at least understandable.
[–]skyylineddrive 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
I'm all for keeping things organized to a point, but criticizing someone by citing a paragraph isn't personable or respectful. It's the equivalent of correcting someone's misspelling or grammar mistake by sending them a link to dictionary.com, and it's rarely seen as helpful.
Of course, there are times when I think "Hm, wish that person had stated their opinion more creatively", but I also know there are times when all I can come up with as a reply is a simple, nice sentiment. That should be good enough, in most cases.
It has nothing to do with "refusing to learn", it has to do with being comfortable in acknowledging someone's contribution as pleasant without having to follow guidelines for conversation. Nothing needs to be so regimented.
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc -1 points0 points1 point 12 months ago
but criticizing someone by citing a paragraph isn't personable or respectful.
True and I have no real excuse why I couldn't type up a better response other then laziness so hopefully I will learn from this. Maybe it was still rude but at the same time his response wasn't exactly personal or creative and would have been better suited for a pm instead of public comment. I don't see much justification as to boasting how much appreciate someone to everyone else. Although I do understand the awkwardness behind sending a pm I view it as a much better alternative and maybe something that should be mentioned in the Reddiquette? Of course that isn't up for me to decide.
I also think praising someone outside of leaving an upvote is a nice thing to do but what if everyone started to do that? Eventually every worth while comment and post would be filled with comments just stating how the people who read them upvoted it. Worthwhile comments would be drowned out by millions of pointless ones discouraging people to read the comment and thus engage in discussions that people could learn from.
I for one clicked this post's thread while browsing r/all looking to see a discussion about reposts and hopefully engage in the discussion because I feel I might have something worth saying. When I clicked the thread and noticed the top comment just saying "I agree" I was a little annoyed that something that is mentioned in the Reddiquette for a reason is now the top comment.
Also very few comments are about the topic the post addresses but whether that is something that should be changed or kept the same is something I can't argue all that well. A lot of comments are just jokes and very obvious ones at that. Why would I or anyone else want to engage in what I assume would be a meaningful discussion with these people if all they like are one sentence long jokes.
Nothing needs to be so regimented.
While I agree I think users still need to follow the guidelines of Reddit more closely. It would be nice if we didn't need rules and everyone had the same goals when the comment/ vote/ post but that is impossible especially on one of the top 50 U.S. sites. If we view things case by case and the rules were more open ended then people would easily abuse them by finding loop holes. The same can be said for any system. The reason why I think Reddit is better then similar sites is because of its rules which show a willingness for better commenting and posting. If no one followed the Reddiquette then Reddit comments would look no different from Digg's or Youtube's.
Also thank you for your reply and while I did just argue it I agree with most of the points you are making. Ironically I consider your responses to be the only intelligent response I've had in this thread.
[–]skyylineddrive 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
From the sounds of it, you were looking for a debate so as to argue. While your reasoning seems sound, I would advise you to find alternate forms of conversing with a means to instruct. Or, sometimes you just have to let things go and realize it's more trouble to complain than just move on. I also like finding topics in which to find satisfying conversation involving various viewpoints, yet you went to a F7U12 comic instead of an actual thread asking opinions on reposts. Perhaps a different thread would have suited your tastes, but also taking a look at the comments already existing would give you an idea as to what kind of discourse is occurring. Starting an argument doesn't equal participating in a debate - your comment was incendiary, as opposed to helpful.
All in all, I agree that comments sometimes are similar to that of Youtube, which is disappointing. At the same time, I know there is no way to properly control that without exiling a good lot of the community here and their opinions, which are valid regardless of how they are voiced. I seek out intelligent conversation on this site, but I'm also accepting in seeing the difference between a conscientious debate and a simple agreement of two casual minds.
I do hope you found a reasonable thread to satisfy your opinions on reposts. :)
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
I wasn't aware of this point in reddiquette. I wouldn't normally post something to the effect, so it was rather inconsequential to me, but I feel i am more well versed on etiquette expected of those frequenting this site. Also, it allows me to infer further expectations pertaining to other types of posts common to reddit.
[–]skyylineddrive -2 points-1 points0 points 12 months ago
It's valuable to know the redditquette; this I agree with. However, there are better and more respectful ways to go about instructing someone that they are in violation of the rules. Simply copy and pasting a paragraph is not seen as helpful, but condescending, in my opinion.
My Anon could have simply stated "Just for future reference, you might want to read the redditquette guidelines, since you posted something that is usually frowned upon. But I also found this to be interesting!"
It's to the point, but also personable and nice. No offense should be taken, and someone learns something they may not have known prior to posting.
[–]aphoenix -2 points-1 points0 points 12 months ago
Harming discourse.
[–]oogaboogacaveman 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago
the world may never know
OH WELL I UPVOTED YOU
Upvote. Upvoted. Upvoted for x. Upvote for you, good sir. I wish I had a million upvotes to give. My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give.
So now one of the members of this subreddit starts to troll. Also I would like to know why. I don't mind it if people want to joke around and have fun but there are other sites for it. I don't see why you would all need to join Reddit if you refuse to acknowledge the sites guidelines.
[–]oogaboogacaveman 2 points3 points4 points 12 months ago
A) this was posted to Reddit.com, not f7u12 which I unsubscribed from because I don't want to read for an hour about someone's shitty day
B) I used to get mad about reposts and stuff too, but honestly, if the community upvotes it, then that's what the community wants to see. If to you that means the community is going to shit, then that's your call. The most you can really do is downvote, especially if people won't listen to what you say.
C) I do troll occasionally, and this seemed too obvious (I did really upvote you though because you have a point)
this was posted to Reddit.com, not f7u12
Sorry I should have checked and I edited my comment were I said r/f7u12. Thank you for point it out.
but honestly, if the community upvotes it, then that's what the community wants to see.
Sometimes the community might be wrong without knowing it and would thus like some encouragement if they made a mistake. I was slightly hoping that some of the members here would be able to take a little criticism but I should have learned that such a large subreddit would not be open minded. I took a chance that hopefully someone might learn something but I think new users will just assume I'm wrong based on my downvotes.
The most you can really do is downvote
In some cases yes but I have criticized others comments on r/truereddit and ended up being upvoted. Although there such behavior is encouraged here I don't really know what people want.
Sometimes the community might be wrong without knowing it and would thus like some encouragement if they made a mistake.
you talk as if there's a correct way to reddit. Best be trollin

next time i go on reddit i'm going to consult him first just so i can do it correctly
[–]TheNessman -1 points0 points1 point 12 months ago
i think that this thread is too much of a nice circle jerk. the reddiquette here would just get in the way of people talking about how nice they are to each other.
Even though i would say you're in the right, i would mention it's kind of pointless to quote the reddiquette here .
[–]My-Anonymous-Acc -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 months ago
it's kind of pointless to quote the reddiquette here
It is but if I and other people are discouraged to reference it then what purpose does the Reddiquette even have? I could run to the mods for every thing I downvote but even if the mods did care and agreed with me users would learn from others mistakes or at least not be given a reason why the person was wrong.
Edit: Also I'm going to asleep so if you reply on this comment or any of my others one I won't be able to respond for several hours.
[–]AndrewReily -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 months ago
I literally thought about creating new accounts, just so I could give this more up votes.
[–]FuckEnglish 6 points7 points8 points 12 months ago
How do you feel after 20 links of the same thing?
[–]salix_catus 3 points4 points5 points 12 months ago
why do they get upvoted then? things sort of speak for themselves.
[–]FuckEnglish 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
Because people often don't vote on things that they don't like or don't have a strong opinion about. The fact that reddit allows that people vote on submissions means nothing about actual opinions on the site. An example would be two utterly conflicting viewpoints both being upvoted equally in the same thread. People often take the voting system to mean that if something is upvoted it is agreed upon by the majority but that is often not the case.
TL;DR: People don't vote very often and those that do downvote less than they upvote.
[–]salix_catus 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
oh.... i hardly ever downvote :/ don't see the point.
[–]jpane 2 points3 points4 points 12 months ago
Thank you! Nothing rages me more than people bitching about reposts.
the rage comic police are coming for you.
they might go easy since you obeyed rule number 9092375, in that you have exactly four panels.

What I love about reposts is when when my computer crashes, and I lose all of my pictures that I have saved, I know over the next two months I can get them all back. : )
[–]noredcrayon 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
You mean about a day and a half.
[–]System6 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
THANK YOU! Seriously, I posted a Rage comic once that was a very strange and true story that had literally just happened to me. Flooded with RE-POST, RE-POST, RE-POST....
The cool thing about Reddit is that it moves so fast. If it's a re-post, let it go. Not all of us can be on here 24/7. (But me, I totally can...)
[–]cfsg 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago
Redditor for 1 month
Welp, that explains it.
[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago*
The only time a repost annoys me is when I've seen it within the previous 72 hours in the same sub, and it's not a [FIXED] or [SOON.] Because this means the poster really isn't trying at all to see if somone else was faster than them.
Other than that, I'm right there with you, OP.
[–]CaptainKate757 0 points1 point2 points 12 months ago
I appreciate good reposts. If they were funny to me the first time, they'll probably be funny the 5th.
Also, there's a lot of shit I miss when I'm not on my Lappy486. The reposts help me completely fill my brain with the latest picture of a cat in a funny pose.
