Serious question: what other shows even approach the amount of detail and threading of jokes/plotlines that Arrestef Development had? it's early and I can't really think of others off the top of my head

EDIT: Also, the comment above me forgot to mention the cameos. The fucking people they got to show up on that show. Liza Minelli, Martin Short, Tom Jane, Andy Richter, Zach Braff, Amy Poehler, Carl Weathers, Ben Stiller, Scott Baio, David Attell, JK Simmons, Charlize Theron, Judge Reinhold, Dan Castellanetta, not to mention Ed Helms, Rob Corddry, Jack McBrayer, Craig Robinson, Andy Samberg, and Jane Lynch before they were stars.

EDIT 2: +Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jeff Garlin, and of course, William Hung (as pointed out by LordGaGa)

[–]stardonis 58 points59 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Archer (the newish cartoon on FX) does a bang up job Ouijing up that 'Arrested Development' feel. This is helped out by the fact that Lucielle and Kitty are lead actors on the show and play characters that are not unlike their AD counterparts.

The writing? Well no writing will ever be as good as AD (Jesus-fuck, I hope I am wrong), but they have good talent who write reoccurring jokes that play out over the seasons.

Try Frisky Dingo. Made by one of the creators of Archer before he did it. Similar humor and animation, not the same big name voice actors, but more crazy and over the top (I assume b/c they knew they weren't gonna last).

one of those shows that's only funny if you've seen all the episodes in order, and gets funnier with each subsequent viewing. i've probably watched each episode at least 80 times, not even exaggerating haha. it has a level of callbacks that rivals AD. in fact, archer features tons of callbacks to frisky dingo as well!

The Venture Bros. I know its just a cartoon, but its a fantastic depiction of character development.

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually very thematically interesting too. The creators have talked about how it's not just trying to be funny, it's also trying to play off of the disappointment that we as a culture have felt after our '60s and '70s dreams of a future golden age of technology and science fell short. The reason that they reference so many old TV and cartoon shows is because those shows reflected our idealism - an idealism that has now failed, like Rusty Venture himself. We used to have incredibly bold hopes about the future, but now cynicism and selfishness have superseded our cultural aspirations.

It's pretty interesting, actually.

[–]tigrenus 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is really interesting. I guess I kind of felt that at a gut level, but could never really verbalize it. Do you have a source for the interview?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here is a link to where it is posted (it's an audio interview, so it has to be downloaded). It was part of a commentary track that didn't go onto a dvd.

Here's the relevant bit though:

Publick: "This show... If you'll permit me to get 'big picture', this show is actually all about failure. Even in the design, everything is supposed to be kinda the death of the space-age dream world. The death of the jet-age promises."

Hammer: "It's about the beauty of failure. It's about that failure happens to all of us...Every character is not only flawed, but sucks at what they do, and is beautiful at it and Jackson and I suck at what we do, and we try to be beautiful at it, and failure is how you get by...It shows that failure's funny, and it's beautiful and it's life, and it's okay, and it's all we can write because we are big...failures."

just a cartoon

ಠ_ಠ

upvote for vb, but that's akin to saying that video games or comics are for kids

there's no medium that's inherently juvenile or simplistic. yes, there are some forms of entertainment that are newer, and that have traditionally been marketed to kids, but really the limitations have more to do with the creators and the close mindedness of people who dismiss it without even taking a look at the content.

sorry for the mini rant. go team venture

[–]swuboo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Animation isn't really much newer than live-action movies. Nor were they originally marketed to kids, per se. Early cartoons were intended as much (or more) for adults as they were for kids.

I can recall one particularly stark episode of early Betty Boop where her boss attempts to rape her. (Of course, the film codes quickly followed and Betty Boop became as tame as the rest of American film.)

I blame Hanna-Barbera for the perception that cartoons can only ever be kids' stuff.

Sopranos*

And yes, its probably one of the best hour long shows of all time. There are literally hundreds of characters and each and every one of them has such a unique personality. There is so much detail to the way they characterize all of them. Its never about the actions that they perform, but the way which they perform them.

You know I watched the first episode of Community wanting to like it because I'd always been a fan of Jole McHale. Frankly, the first season I wasn't really taken. I stopped watching and came back midway through the second season. It REALLY has gotten so much better. It's flat out hilarious. Agree with other posters here, watch it from the beginning and let it find it's groove. When you get to the Paintball Episode you'll be converted.

Try again from the beginning. I watched it weekly with the other NBC shows for a season and half and was always meh about it. Then I watched from the beginning again and I started loving it. Arrested is still on top but community comes close

[–]dimensional_dan 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think one of the differences is that AD has really top notch actors - it's not just a great script, but the actors actually understand and perform their roles so naturally.

[–]bfogarty27 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

very true, but what i realized about community is that at the beginning its kind of awkward for the viewer (imo) but that's because in the show the characters are getting to know each other at the same time the actors are. once you get a few episodes in they really fill into their roles

Comparing Arrested Development to Seinfeld isn't really fair. AD is serialized, so it relies on references, callbacks, and long arcs. Seinfeld, while it occasionally features these aspects, derives it's brilliance from perfectly crafted characters and consistently ludicrous intertwining story lines that collide for a dizzying punch line. If I'm flipping channels, I'm watching Seinfeld every time.

Two great shows with very different formulas.

Not saying it's as detailed as AD by any means (episodes are only 10 mins long, kinda hard to be), but Childrens Hospital is a veritable who's-who of comic forces these days.

They've had: Rob Corddry, Megan Mullally, Rob Huebel, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, Nick Kroll, David Wain, Ed Helms, Joe Lo Truglio, Lizzy Caplan, A.D. Miles, Paul Scheer, Jason Sudeikis, Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, the entire Party Down cast (cameo) and I think Paul Rudd was in an episode as well.

Plus Jon Hamm runs the hospital, and the show has the best Marlon Wayans joke in history.

EDIT: By the way, for any fans of the series, I say Ward 8 is the best episode.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but I think it's an innuendo for what happens in prison. Think of ice cream sandwiches, black parts on the outside, one white part in the middle, and...well, it's prison.

My favorite connection to the actors' old work is the fact that Scott Baio took over for Henry Winkler as the family lawyer, in the same way that he did back in the Happy Days/Joanie Loves Chachie era as the 'heart throb'.

That always blew me away that they came through with that.

Another great one is that the actress who played "N. Bluth" is actually Jason Bateman's sister in real life: Justine Bateman

One of the smartest most well thought out intertwined comedies ever.

Can't wait for the new episodes and the movie.

true story my bf walked into barnes and noble just milling around the magazine racks then almost bumps into a table when he looks to his right and said there was some grey haired guy sitting there giving him a weird look as if to say "why is this guy so close to me?" he comes to tell me about it and only then notices the line to the table and I tell him he just exchanged awkward glances with the Fonz lol!
