We all know that only the imgurs will make it to the frontpage. This could perhaps change with another system or if imgur had a button the poster could fill into put a clickable link to the original artist.

But instead of trying to do this or find other solutions, we all continue to bitch for an eternity about the horrible horrible nature of imgur-posters. Not only is this becoming as old as 10 year olds saying "and my axe", but in this case the bitching is so highly rated, that the actual original's link (currently) is way down and gets fewer clicks.

My concern is that it's a shitty repost and is taking up space on my frontpage. Whether or not he gets imaginary internet points for it really isn't important, but since that was his motivation in posting it, one has to wonder how fewer reposts we'd get if karma was wiped off the board.

If his only motivation to post this picture was karma, why is everyone upvoting it? I think because

a: They have seen it before, but enjoy it so much that they vote it up so more people get to see it.

b: They haven't seen it before, and upvote because it is cool/funny.

The root is not karma, it is redditors.

I often imagine the demon taking pity on the man and they become great pals. Hijinks ensue and after many adventures and the realisation that he was actually pretty smart all along, the man is helped on his way to his kitchen, where they part ways.

Hubert's momentary complete absence of thought had shaken the walls of reality. The intertwined loops of the brain should not end without death and yet, here, somehow, Hubert had transcended the walls without dying or ingestion of consciousness-warping substance.

Blinking back into thought, he saw before him an abomination of a creature. Horns and glistening dark red skin; Five stories tall with earth grasping hands and terrifying claws "You should have not come here, human. Why do you cross through my domain?"

"I was on the way to the kitchen for a snack and I got lost" said Hubert plainly.

'Lost' was both completely the wrong word and yet exactly the right word at the same time. The simplicity, yet sageness of this use of words, managed to sufficiently confuse the demon long enough that it was forced to reply "You ended up in the twelfth plane of torment on the way to the kitchen?"

Hubert made it known that he was not a clever man.

"Human - On this plane of existence there is no such thing as pity, and yet you have brought it here within me. I should kill you where you stand, and yet for many reasons you will be returned to your own realm."

The demon looked again, and Hubert was no longer there. Somewhere he heard what he should not know were milk bottles rattling and then the sound of a refrigerator door closing.

"We will meet again, Human", mused the demon.

It was not accustomed to this. Over its realm It had complete control. The other creatures within this dominion were subjugated, here to be threatened, angered, confused. It was frequently pleased by their anguish and their inability to scream. But then, It had taken away that privilege and only returned it if they were to leave the plane.

It had no control over the sky, however, from which they fell into It's control.

The sky now was full of upturned helmets pale yellow and fading upwards against the black clouded redness. The long sparks still flashed lengthways amongst the cloud rolls but the helmets avoided their tendrils.

Something was deeply wrong.

Hubert chewed happily on his sandwich while he stared at the wall. He was vaguely aware of the picture of his parents to the upper right of his vision but neither it nor his parents entered his mind.

"This tomato is exceptionally delicious." he thought to himself.

Eventually, his midnight snack consumed, he shuffled up the stairs, thinking of his bed and the fresh sheets which he'd put on there earlier in the demon.

Demon?

"Human!" came a cry. "Once more you interrupt my infliction and visit my realm!"

"Do you like tomatoes?" asked Hubert. "I find them especially sweet at this time of year."

"How do you reach me so easily, Human? This realm is an uncountable distance from your plane. Rarely do your kind make it here, and yet here you are, and not for reasons you should be."

"Hubert." said Hubert. He offered his hand.

"You do not fear me, Human... Hubert?"

"I don't understand."

The demon tilted it's head curiously. "Perhaps not." He offered a claw for Hubert to shake.

It was growing perplexed now. Some of the helmets were of a shade It could not describe. The long sparks had ceased.

They too were confused. Their torment had paused and for the first time in their memories they were able to talk with each other without mind altering pain.

It turned and faced away from the helmets in the sky only to see Itself - Twenty, no thirty, no - hundreds. What was happening here?

Hubert chatted on and on, and the Demon, for reasons he did not understand, and often through banal descriptions of human mundanity he too did not understand, listened intently as a father might to a child with an unformed sense of language.

Hubert talked of tomato plants and his parents and freshly washed sheets and the episode which ensued after his attempt at washing machine repair.

The demon, for the first time in a millenium, drifted into slumber and the sky went black.

It, It, many Its, once more allowed the screams of their charges and ground their many tiny bodies into paste with their shining, fat, gelatinous tendrils.

Each It thought alike: Destroy many. Force them to other planes. Erase the helmets.

Thumping of tendrils and screams rang out as the long sparks returned in the sky. The helmets began to break. It thought there had been success, but from the helmets fell more creatures. More to be punished.

The screams deafened It. Every one of Its kind stopped breaking their tormented.

Hubert chewed happily on his sandwich while he stared at the wall. He was aware that something was different about the photograph of his parents and perhaps the wallpaper was the wrong shade of brown.

"This pepper is a little too spicy." he thought to himself.

Eventually, his midnight snack consumed, he shuffled up the stairs, thinking of his bed and the fact he really ought to have changed the sheets earlier in the day.

Sleep soon overwhelmed him.

The demon's mind churned as it tried to recall the purpose of slumber, all without the demon's awareness. A dream befell him for the first time in a thousand years.

He was a small man lost on the twelfth plane of torment. A smell of sulphur and a bad taste of peppers in his mouth.

When the demon awoke, Hubert was there cowered before him.

"P-please. Don't eat me. Don't kill me. I want to go home."

"Human... Hubert, why now do you fear me. If you are trapped here I may be able to send you home, but it is not clear why..."

"Look, demon. Another me." Hubert was perched on the demon's side where it lay and both he and the demon looked at this cowering Hubert.

The demon considered for a second or two, unsure of what was unfolding. With tremendous effort and care, he set down his plain Hubert next to the cowering wreck and lowered a gargantuan yellow eye to the pair of them.

"Two of you? The walls have... thinned?" muttered the demon as it began to realise a greater depth to the situation.

"Hubert..s. I shall return."

The demon's heavy footfalls shook the ground as it strode into the distance.

"Oh thank God it's gone." said the new Hubert. "He's been very nice to me." nodded the original. "You know that thing?" "Not really, but he sent me home once. At least I think he did. Do you grow tomatoes too?"

"... Peppers." "Oh."

The tendrilled ones, It's kin, approached It. It seemed to be at the centre and they needed explanation. Their speed increased as they encroached upon It. The tormented, for now, forgotten.

"WHICH PLANE OF TORMENT?" they asked in unison. "THE LAST" It answered. Then together "WE ARE EACH THE LAST".

"THE WALLS HAVE THINNED"

The demon raced towards the spire noticing the dearth of tormented in his plane. There were none here save for the two Huberts he had left behind. Two of them. Walls thinned. Perhaps this was not a good thing.

His tormented must have gone somewhere, perhaps fallen through to another plane. Perhaps escaped upward. Escaped! That would be a terrible thing. They were on his plane for a purpose. To learn.

The spire dwarfed even the demon when drawn to full height. He placed his hand on the spire and reality shifted.

His brethren, all dark, all horned, all with grasping hands and fearful claws slid through murky shades and arrived at the spire.

"You have summoned us here. Why?"

"The walls have thinned. I, with the accidental help of a mortal, may have summoned an alternate of his kind. We should not be able to summon them. They must be sent here. We may be in great danger."

A streak of lightning shot across the sky and shattered the point at the very apex of the spire. Rock began to fall as the demons scattered. The dark red demon leapt clear as the largest rock fell to where he had been stood.

One of his brethren crushed by the same roared his last as reality shook once more. In his place a sight which terrified even the demons.

It had shifted to this new plane from the depths - twenty times the size of a demon, so dark it seemed to glow with darkness, tendrils moving in a rapid shifting which unsettled the red demon and the others.

"THE WALLS HAVE THINNED"

"WHEN YOUR KIND TRANSCEND WE TORMENT THOSE OF YOUR KIND AS YOU TORMENT THE CATTLE WE SEEK YOUR HELP."

Terrified, all but the red demon touched the spire and shifted back to their realms.

In the sky upturned curves of yellow and lilac began to shine.

"I understand" said the demon.
