Xeno, as a word prefix as stated in the wiktionary: Having to do with foreigners, as in xenophilia, or more commonly, xenophobia. From a foreign place, as in xenolith. So I'm guessing they were intended to be alien.

Xenophobia can also apply to people from another country, religion, or ethnicity, though.

I thought the whole point was that they had evolved independently on the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean.
