Stuff like this is why it's impossible not to believe in extraterrestrial life. There are things in this universe that are unimaginable to us, impossible to grasp, mind-blowing to even try.

Just like the famous quote says, "if it's just us, it seems like an awful waste of space"

The interesting thing is that, due to the size of the universe, and how fast things move both relative to time and space, it's easier to measure things in units of time, rather than units of space. Good video.

At a certain point, once the sun disappeared, the relative size of the stars shown became impossible to grasp. While the sun was still there, I could sort of grasp how huge they were, but after that it was just... I knew they were huger, but I couldn't actually frame it.

[–]solstice38 0 points1 point ago

The bit with the airplane at the end helps to put the largest known star into a human perspective.

[–]PastaNinja 1 point2 points ago

There is at least one mistake in that presentation; it says the the "observable universe" is 14,000,000 lightyears, because that's the age of the universe. That's a common misconception:

The age of the universe is about 13.75 billion years, but due to the expansion of space we are observing objects that were originally much closer but are now considerably farther away (as defined in terms of cosmological proper distance, which is equal to the comoving distance at the present time) than a static 13.75 billion light-years distance. The diameter of the observable universe is estimated to be about 28 billion parsecs (93 billion light-years), putting the edge of the observable universe at about 46–47 billion light-years away.

Did this almost disturb anyone else? Looking at up close images of other planets always seems to make me uneasy; fear of the unknown I guess...

[–]Torus2112 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes! After it finished I was like, "I actually feel kind of scared... WHY?!"

It makes no sense, but I actually got intimidated by how big stars can get; like i'm worried they'll come here and kick the Sun's ass or something.

[–]Enceladus_Salad 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's cool to think about how the sun will reach the orbit of mars in size when it becomes a giant, and yet still be dwarfed in comparison to some of these stars. Those god damn 1% stars...

What makes me uneasy is our sense of home. We feel at home in our towns, but if we venture too far out we get homesick. Another town, not so bad, another state, some people can do it, another country?

In the meantime if you condense the Earth to the size of a cue ball, the earth's surface-with all it's peaks and trenches- would be smoother than that cue ball. Go ahead and breathe on that cue ball and that film of condensation is as thick of a film as life is on Earth.

So keeping this insignificance in mind. Remember our solar system is orbiting the center of the galaxy. It takes 225 million years to do so. So the last time we were here, Pangaea was breaking up and the first dinosaurs were starting to appear.

So even though we feel at home we are a lot like those streaks of water you see on the windows sometime when you look out an airplane window. No real substance, hurtling from god knows where to god knows where. And if anyone is watching us move across that window we'll be gone before they know it with another drop to take our place.

Hooolllyyyy shit this is ridiculously old. And yet there's such a lack of acknowledgement of the fact in the comments. I think I'm ready to throw in the towel as an active redditor. :/

When posts about things as old as the internet make it to the front page, I believe it's time to say my goodbyes. This place is full of bludgeoned memes and an obnoxious sense of false superiority.

I'm going back to 4chan. At least there the harshness of the user base keeps out old content that gets so widely praised that it makes the front page of reddit.

There's no way we're the only planet with life on it in the universe. I really wish I could teleport to planets and meet alien life forms, so that I may have sex with their women, you know for science! I wonder what alien snatch looks like? Maybe they're so advanced they have one opening for everything. It's where they eat and give birth from.

This type of information that killed my religion. Look how big this stuff is - and this is only what we've been able to observe in the past 100 years! It's crazy how small and irrelevant we are in the grand scheme of it all.

I've never understood things like this. Why do people find it so surprising or remarkable that we're so small? You only need to look up to realise that. :-p

I dont get it, it didn't seem all that big to me. In fact, it all seemed to fit nicely into a Youtube pop up window for me.

The size and age of the Cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home. In a cosmic perspective, most human concerns seem insignificant, even petty. And yet our species is young and curious and brave and shows much promise. In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the Cosmos and our place within it, explorations that are exhilarating to consider. They remind us that humans have evolved to wonder, that understanding is a joy, that knowledge is prerequisite to survival. I believe our future depends powerfully on how well we understand this Cosmos in which we float like a mote of dust in the morning sky.

I literally cannot comprehend any of what is happening. As soon as I saw how small our sun was in comparison, my brain blew up.

Does anyone else get really scared at how BIG those stars are? If somehow one of those stars was right next to earth it would fill the entire sky. This image literally scares the shit out of me.
