What I loved about this game is that attacking certain areas would yield different results. If you went after their helipad, they couldn't call in air support.

[–]KingTheoden 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was always my first move in a new area. Nothing ended your team faster than that attack chopper.

[–]cuffofizz 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was a great part of the game. I think my favorite part is the soundtrack though. Probably the best soundtrack to a video game I've ever played.

I also liked the idea of being able to command units. It made me feel like I wasn't just another FPS player on rails, open environment, and my actions had a real effect on the outcome of the game.

They left it open for a sequel at the end too. I've been waiting almost a decade for it. I'm starting to think it's never gonna come.

Seriously. More games need this sort of system, especially open-ended ones.

Me and my friends would goof around. I would make him go to the tallest building, and the throw the molotov at him and he jumped off. "FLAME ON!!"

I also beat him with the wrench and his body fell, it was pretty fucking awesome. Miss this game.

This is true. Yet in reviews, the multiplayer got bashed. I had a lot of fun with it.

Best fucking moment ever in video game history for me. Still to this day.

Story: Me and my friend were playing against each other. It was the long, monotonous type of game if you've ever played against one of your buddies. Anyways, so there we were, battling it out in the middle for that fucking flag. I decide to go the tactical route and capture all of those four spawn points on the edges of the map. As the game drags on, it starts to get down to the wire, back and forth. Finally, it's within the last 45 seconds for me to win. I still have the flag in the air so, I go around the map to make sure he didn't fuck with my spawn points. Unfortunately, I had no more men. But, neither did he. I can't find him anywhere, and then it hits me. THAT FUCKERS GOING TO STOP ME FROM WINNING.

I run back to the middle of the map, my time so close to being up. Mano a mano, it's me and him, all of our men completely killed. The timer is still clicking. 7....6....5.... I see him there. He is starting to hoisten his flag up. I start shooting in a blind rage. 4......3......2..... HIS FLAG IS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE POLE. FINALLY, he goes down. I killed him with a split second to spare. I'm sure it was a .00000001 of a second. 1......... And the screen comes up, to show that I won the game.

TL;DR: Fuck yeah, I shit my pants from cheering.

[–]hopeNsorrow 0 points1 point ago

Who wouldn't. Modern games still can't get squad mechanics right, yet this game did way back in the day. Just a perfect game all around.

[–]wouldyoukindly 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As did I, friend. Very nostalgic for me. I played it maybe 3-4 times through. The multiplayer was fun with friends, too.

[–]neil_aran 40 points41 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, we need a sequel. As well as an HD remake of the first game with some sort of co-op campaign (that was the only thing that could have made the game any better than it already was).

It sucks how instead of any new Freedom Fighters games we got the Kane and Lynch series instead :(

[–]JesusSama 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny thing, they haven't exactly abandoned the idea of a sequel. They originally threw it out there around '04, but they diverted the staff to make Kane and Lynch instead.

[–]muldoonx9 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hopefully, after they finish with Hitman, they'll make another Freedom Fighters instead of a third Kane and Lynch.

[–]JesusSama 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously. I think anybody that's played that game looks back on it with fond memories. It was pretty well received. Here's a link to a gaming site that states that IO said "No Comment" to a Freedom Fighters sequel.

[–]Ghost_Basuta 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Godamnit Kane and Lynch. When I see someone else play it, it looks cool and kind of fun. But when I play it, there's just something wrong.

[–]y0haN 1 point2 points ago

And then they made Kane and Lynch 2. It does get worse.

[–]DrunkInPublic69 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow I can't believe I just seen this post.. I was thinking of posting the EXACT same thing on my way home 10 minutes ago.. Awesome. I simply LOVED this game, I used to spend hours with my friends playing multiplayer creating multiple scenarios and having fun. This is my favorite Xbox game I would have to say, I might just go out tomorrow and purchase it again it was so much fun.

As much as I fell in love with the single player, it was the multiplayer that made me a Freedom Fighter fanatic, when you can constantly hire bots to come fight with you and place them strategically at locations, genius. If you have the chance to play this underrated epic Xbox classic, PLAY IT. If I could find my old copy I wouldn't be typing this I would be playing it right now.

[–]a_raconteur 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I'm not mistaken, there is a PC version of the game too, in case you don't feel like dusting off your Xbox. Or is this game backwards compatible with 360?

[–]DoctorLock 2 points3 points ago

[–]Anandos 5 points6 points ago

Believe it or not, I was playing the game in "my mind" three days earlier. Fixing plumbing, raiding police station, the sewer hideout, etc, etc.

one of the best parts of the game is music too.

come on IO Interactive.. do something!

[–]MaebiusKiyak 1 point2 points ago

This was published by EA and then IOI was bought by Eidos. As much as I want a sequel I have a feeling their non commitment to a sequel is a result of them not totally owning the rights to the series. I remember in late '05 early '06 hearing rumours of a sequel going into development and then in November of 2007 we got Kane and Lynch. Which had the exact, exact squad commands as Freedom Fighters.

I'm as big a fan as anybody of this game, bigger that most i bet. I absolutely adore it. I get such a heart tearing sense of nostalgia when i think about it that I have to play it very soon afterward. Which is great that the game, almost 10 years old, is still playable, but nothing compares to those memories of the first time I played it.

A HD remake of this game would be amazing, they have a new Engine to work with now (Because of Hitman: Absolution) and thousand of people still love this game for what it was and would offer very little improvements.

I haven't played the multiplayer in years because, regrettably, i gave back my PS2 version a long time ago and the PC version doesn't have a multiplayer option. But this multiplayer could, with a few reworkings, make for a very fun competitive online multiplayer experience.

The soundtrack for this still ranks 1st on my list of game soundtracks, a lot of that list consists of Jesper Kyd, whose music would really forge the soul of the games he contributed too. I don't think there's been a game he's worked on that I haven't thought the soundtrack was outstanding. It never goes unnoticed.

I would happily pay full price for a HD remake of this game, but i would probably prefer a whole new sequel. Containing all the same elements that made this game great. The squad tactics, simple and effective. The Charisma bar, simple and difficulty leveling. Multiple paths in the levels, and levels to tackle in multiple orders so as to defeat the enemy in easier ways: take out their bridges, no infantry support. Take out their Helipad, no air support. Save and recapture their POW's, more charisma = more soldiers to fight by your side. Take out their Supply Depot's, more ammo and weapons for you.

Other things which were small but added to the charm of the game. As the game progressed Chris' appearance changes, he clothes become more ragged, his hair longer. The same happens with the recruits, who dress more appropriately when winter arrives.

Just utter brilliance in it's simplicity.

[–]randomusername9000 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As long as they leave out that damn sewer level in the middle, it'll be great!

[–]HoverJet 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked that level.

[–]TeddyBane 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That level was the shit! It filled me with hope that the freedom fighters actually had a fallback zone, and that hope was promptly crushed when the Ruskies tore it apart.

[–]Sauce_ 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which made it an awesome little twist.

[–]jlark21 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

exactly! I hated that they invaded our safe zone. my favorite part of the game to hate.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Dude, the safe zone is always going to be invaded. Video Game Fact of Life #34.

[–]darkmuch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find it funny how sometimes a twist or bad event can make a game better and more memorable, but other times it causes irritation or just a rage at the situation that my character is facing and the injustice of it.

[–]rexlandis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am usually the RTS/strategy gaming type. On first impression, I thought this game seemed a little simple. But the game expanded and grew while playing, unlike the vast majority of games that remain static throughout. The slight touches throughout added a lot. I don't want a sequel. I want a high end, bad-ass trilogy Mass Effect style.

I used to play multiplayer by myself and capture all the bases on one controller, then try to take back the bases on another controller. When my friends would play me I would always win. Now that I look back on that, it seems kind of sad.

I remember playing with my sister on versus. I shot a rocket launcher from a rooftop at her base and hit her. She did a backflip off the base and faceplanted. Sigh good time.

You know what i did to get this game? I signed up for AOL. At CompUSA (yea this was 02) there was some dbag AOL rep hawkin accounts and if you got one you got to pick out a game. I dont remember what the others were but Freedon Fighters was one of them. If i canceled within a month it wouldnt charge my card. So i get home and install the game and it was aweaome. Not long after i called up and had to deal with another aol dbag asking what my interests were and asking if i had searched aol keywords fkr like 'gamecube' and 'playstation'. Anyway those retention jerks are annoying and the game was totally worth it. I think Freedom fighters and max payne are a few of the only games ive beat more than twice.

Oh did everyone know if you beat FF on the hardest difficulty you get to play an extra secret level set on liberty island?

Is this the game where multiplayer was like capture the flag mixed with king of the hill?? If so I only ever played at my friends house but was so fun! Didn't you need to control flag for reinforcements(respawn) and the matches would go on forever!:D

I remember getting to the last mission where I'm allowed 12 (if my memory serves me) followers. I spent at least 30 minutes just walking around slowly with the camera aiming back.

[–]Benassi 0 points1 point ago

That game was fucking awesome. Me and my buddy when we were younger played versus all the time and just sent out troops to attack each other while we just sat at the base lobbing grenades all over.

Absoltely. I loved the multiplayer, and used to get three buddies together to play it all the time. The cover system mixed with the ability to send small squads of soldiers in was such a cool play mechanic.

[–]Tevisrocks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YES. I still have this game and play it from time to time. Only if I have 3 other friends though. The squad command system was brilliant, and I always piss my friends off with the sniper rifle lol.

Me and my friend played this a lot. the only problem was that i had a messed up analogue stick on a madcatz controller. Slight twitch and it would bring up a circular menu if i recall correctly. Constantly plagued by "THAT ONES GETTING AWAY" :'(

Unfortunately, I believe EA still retains the rights to the Freedom Fighters name, and IO is now owned by Square. The likelihood of that happening, as much as I would personally kill for it, is almost none. :<

Upvote!! Beat the game in one sitting, release day. I was so mad i didn't savor the experience. Went back and played through it again the next day, don't usually play a single player game a second time.

I cannot agree more this is a one they always say no comment on in interviews. If they bring it back this or next gen with multiplayer squads and everything I will go crazy. Also singleplayer left at a perfect sequel point. Was one of the first story modes to truly grip me and not let go

Oh man this was such a solid game. Glad to see it get some love. Beat it a number of times. Wonder if I still have that CD... Kind of a father to all the third person shooters with chest high walls around today. Nothing better than sniping that general and freaking out as the world comes crashing in around your head on that island map. Man, great stuff.

I fucking loved Freedom Fighters! I generally get annoyed at "This needs a sequel" posts but this one I completely agree with. There still isn't really anything out there that's like this game, which is a shame because a current gen expansion on what the original did would be great.

Sequel or spiritual successor, I sincerely think a lot of people would enjoy another game like Freedom Fighters.

Yep I've got a lot of memories too. I still remember playing TDM this one time. I was minding my own business when all of a sudden I got ambushed, but then I realized it was only 1 person on the other team attacking and owning me. So much for an ambush.

This game....so legendary...wow.

Playing king of the hill of the bases that had the stairs leading up to them around the levels in multiplayer....hours of fun attacking and defending...

I loved the "YEAH!" sound effect when you achieved something. I wish I could find it isolated somewhere so I could use it as a ringtone or something.

One of my favorite games. It's just so damn fun. It's a genre I'm a sucker for, and there aren't many like it. Control a single character in third person while telling you squad to do things. SOCOM II was also great in this way.
