I refuse to believe Bruce Lee started a sentence with "seriously, if..." Bruce never had to tell people he was being serious. He was Bruce Lee.

Bruce Lee is not a runner, he's a martial artist, so I don't really see what the deal is here. Secondly...

the route that Bruce, Kareem (and now I) had jogged was only three-quarters of a mile each way – a total of only a mile and a half. Not a huge distance by any stretch, but then, if the intensity (as provided by the hills) is adequate, you really don’t need a huge volume of such training to solicit a dramatic cardiovascular response. Again, remember Bruce Lee’s point that regarding the nature of cardiovascular adaptation:

The other way [to train one’s cardiovascular system] is progression; you must start out slow and then gradually build speed as your conditioning improves.

In other words, such training has to be progressive and intensity (the difficulty of the exercise) is a factor that can be altered on a progressive basis through a process of either adding weight to your limbs while your running or by increasing the grade upon which you are running.

The Roscomare route is obviously an example of the latter (although, in reading Bruce’s training diaries, he would also do a form of double-progressive running, by adding up to 15 pounds of resistance to his limbs while he was running these hills!)

If you push your body insanely hard your whole life, it will in fact give out early.

[–]NO_YOU_ 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck, look the most amazing people in our world pushed themselves and did what many people only dream about they changed our world if you live your whole life thinking"If I work hard I will die sooner" you are an idiot push yourself go until you can not go any longer and then keep going.

TL;RD Fuck what this guy says push yourself do amazing things with your life you will not die earlier.

[–]bokbok 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your body will give out eventually anyway. Why not use it as much as you can? I guess for me I have already experienced numerous injuries/genetic jont problems that the pain isn't going to stop me from doing what I love.

[–]mrbroom 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a difference between working regularly to improve yourself and pushing your limits constantly until you break down. It's not unreasonable to argue that this approach is not, in fact, for everyone despite his implication that it should be.

[–]Sloppy1sts 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not necessarily only physically pushing yourself.

[–]bokbok 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Patience is key, but if you aren't pushing yourself what's the point? If you really love doing something you will do it no matter what.

[–]ScienceBalls -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shut up.

I doubt you actually push yourself very hard at all, much less anywhere close to how hard he pushed himself.

In fact, I bet your life is probably right about average, and you don't really push yourself at all, you just like saying that because you think it sounds good.

[–]broo20 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I push myself beyond my limit, which is probably nowhere near his, but it's mine and it's painful for me.

Anyway, when I die, I'm the only one who does and I'm fine with it, so don't whoever tells me "don't do that you'll die" I tell the to fuck off. (there are exceptions to this, of course, with things like Heroin, which I'd never do).

[–]bokbok 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe not, but that doesn't mean that this isn't the correct attitude. My life is average and I have no problem with that. I don't need recognition to strive for greatness nor do I need it to comprehend what I have achieved. As far as pushing myself, well I could and should do better. Physically I am pretty limited by genetics and injuries, so I do what I do the best I can. If you would like me to dislocate your shoulder 40 times and then have you enter a judo tournament, or go bodysurfing then I could take your words seriously.

[–]verisimilarity -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should cut the broken parts of your body off! Make yourself better! If you bleed to death or fall down some stairs, you were going to die anyway!

Seriously, there's not a "correct attitude" for life, my friend. It's all about your experiences, your state of being, and your options at any given time. If you subscribe to the limit-pushing thing, then that's great, I really like the idea (I watched Gurren Lagann).

But it doesn't give everybody enjoyment. It could cause some people to feel miserable and overworked, and still make them die early. A few inspirational words from someone for whom the approach worked does not apply it to all human beings. Not everybody is him or you; you can't generalize the human experience.

[–]tyeh26 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]nixonrichard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why not use it as much as you can?

Everyone uses their body until it dies. The issue is not how much you use your body, but how you use your body.

As far as I'm concerned, lifting 200 gram glassware while finding a cure to cancer is a much better use of a human body than kicking a canvas bag filled with 100 kg of sand over and over and over again.

[–]bokbok 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with the first part of your sentence completely. But, I don't think that's point of this quote.

I also believe you are comparing apples to oranges here and looking at things from vary narrow perspective. This guy was afraid he was going to have a heart attack, yet he overcame his fear and went through with it. If let's say you devoted your life to cancer research and died midway but your research doesn't accomplish a thing, was it still worth it? If you loved it enough and tried your best it would be, even though technically your time was squandered.

I think we can all relate to times where we have been either very physically or mentally challenged and some times both to where we have pushed through only to come out better.

On the final physical fitness test in Marine Bootcamp, I barely did 3 pull ups. I was extremely upset and vowed to make up for it in the 3 mile run. I took off with a 1 mile sprint, got half way around and realized I had to pee really bad. The only bathroom was at the finish line. I really really had to go. So I made a mad dash to the bathroom by finishing the run, got to the bathroom, saw a line of people, pushed everyone out of the way, and sprayed piss like a wild firehose. I ran 3 miles in 20 minutes flat when my usual time is 22.5 minutes. That's the fastest I've ever run.

i was once on a train with 2 hot girls and couldnt wait to go, so had to make an excuse i was meeting another mate to get off the train and pee. i lost out on some action dammit! because of pee!

I have the book where this quote was taken from, about his workouts and such, he was a really cool guy, too bad he died too early. Many people say it was an allergic reaction, but I heard he had an aneurysm, and there was nothing he could have done to stop it, a flaw he had in his brain :S.

[–]Lineage_tw 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As triumphant and inspirational as this is, there really is a point where you have to stop running and start walking or lightly jogging. It's called the wall. Many people who do long-distance running or cycling will encounter it. You can keep going, but it becomes increasingly dangerous and you can faint from exhaustion.

Also, though less likely for distances of 3-5 miles, you can reach the point of muscle failure if you push too hard for too long.

tl;dr Push your limits, but don't take a running leap across them or you'll pay for it.

This was my facebook profile picture for July through September. In July I could only run for about a mile at a time. By September I was running 3 miles at a time thrice a week. On the very last of my running workouts, I decided to go all out like my boi Bruce Lee and run 5 miles. When I got done running 5 miles I ran .2 more. Because I figured bruce wouldn't want me to put limitations on myself because on his behalf.

he didn't deal too well with muscle relaxers, and he only lived to 33, so I'm pretty sure Bruce Lee is full of shit.

This is very true of running. Sometimes you need a big push to get over a plateau- and later you look back and wonder what was so hard about it.

Many martial artists as young as 50 are having hips replaced due to such ethics.

This from a man who couldn't learn Mandarin for his Chinese movie carreer because it was "too hard"

[–]johnkrukslovechild 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if you know Cantonese, learning Mandarin is a different language. My wife grew up speaking Cantonese with her grandmother but never learned Mandarin. We spent a year living in China teaching English and we both took lessons to learn Mandarin. Her Mandarin was better than mine, because have a feeling for the tones gave her an advantage, but it was not a big margin in terms of being effective with the language. Also many movie stars and singers are well known across China and because of this, some Mandarin speakers can sing some songs in Cantonese but don't really know the language.

Michelle Yeoh, who was in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and many Jackie Chan movies, grew up in Hong Kong but never learned Mandarin. She learned how to say her lines in Crouching Tiger in Mandarin but didn't really understand the words. It's really not unusual for HK actors and singers to never learn Mandarin, and if they did, knowing Cantonese wouldn't make it super easy.

Have you tried to learn Mandarin?? It's fucking ridiculous. Obviously it's child's play for you, and I'm willing to bet your English skills take credit in getting you where you are today in your own "carreer".

Bruce Lee died young. So... bad advice.

[–]evilnolo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but he is a badass... soo.. good advice

[–]CapNRoddy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd rather live a non-badass life than die at like 30.

[–]evilnolo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can be badass and not die by the age of 30, look at Ron Swanson :P

[–]CapNRoddy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

MAybe, but if you use Bruce Lee's method, you'll die young.

[–]evilnolo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would you say that goku followed Bruce lee's method? Maybe he improved upon it... he became an inmortal god!

Anyways, I think it is a good philosophy but everything in excess cant be good.

[–]CapNRoddy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

An immortal god? Goku died all the fucking time

[–]evilnolo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hahahaha did you see the end of the series (GT)... he died a lot but finally he became kinda inmortal... basically he died so many times that he aquired certain rights haha...

Anyway, Goku is a badass, Ron swanson is a badass, bruce lee is a badass.... and maybe you are a badass also since you dont want to follow their advice!

[–]Smoothcriminal610 -3 points-2 points ago

[–]Blinkdog 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, allergic reaction to medication given to him by his physician. Apparently made his brain swell up enough to kill him.

[–]axstoro 0 points1 point ago

Nah, allergic reaction to a pain killer.

Though some say it was Dim Mak, the touch of death. :P
