Darick Doener, Outsude Sunset, Oahu, Hawaii photo by Sean Davey

This is an aerial shot, more than likely from a helicopter. The angle and cropping of the photo is made to look the wave much, much bigger than it really is.

I agree, Mike Parson's 64 footer looks small compared to the photo in this thread

Just a tiny little 50ft ripple. Surprised it's even pushing him.

Cause that's not a big wave or anything. Probably chest-head high.

I never said it wasn't big; I said the cropping and angle were misleading.

I came here to say the same thing. Still a nice ride but perspective can change everything.

no, its not. Jaws produces waves in the 70'-80' range all the time. it is an aerial photo, but its not deceiving in its portrayal of how big the wave it.

For the love of god, I never said it wasn't a fucking huge wave. LOOK at the top of the photo: you can see the surface of the water at a fairly flat angle. This photo was taken at least 100 feet from the surface from a helicopter or airplane.

How do you not think that this is a huge wave? How big are the ones that you surf?

[–]OsamaBeenModdin 11 points12 points ago

Fucking enormous; the surfing here in Indiana is just incredible.

You should come check out the Iowa waves. Gracious.

no, its not. Jaws produces waves in the 70'-80' range all the time.

If I'm not mistaken at Pe'ahi ("Jaws") the average of the BIGGEST waves are around 60' with a few exceptions being bigger depending on wind/weather/season. There are reports of super gigantic waves of 100' or more but nothing ever confirmed at all.

Pe'ahi isn't the only spawning ground of big waves. There are, in fact, just as big waves at Mavericks in N. CA. when the conditions are right. Even the waves in the waters off Tierra del Fuego can be every bit as monstrous on a fairly frequent basis due to common storm conditions (but you'd be nuts to try to surf them).

I, for one, agree with OsamaBeenModdin - I think the photo is a little deceptive. It's a huge wave alright, but it looks a lot bigger than it probably is.

all I'm saying is check out video of said waves breaking. the waves are so big, that they need that much more time to build and break, creating the pseudo-flat appearance of a camera trick.

maverick's is awesome. the break there just topples over! check out the break at Teahupo'o. Its not as huge as the two already mentioned, but it pushes just as much water over a smaller wave. its unreal.

Could it not be an optical illusion - that the picture is sort of top down onto the wave and he's actually now surfing on flat water ahead of it?

[–]ListenToNestor 1 point2 points ago

Perspective makes that wave look huge.

I question the authenticity of this. The biggest wave ever ridden I believe was about an 80 foot face. This looks to be nearly twice that. I don't know if its just the angle that makes it look bigger than it is or if its shopped to show more of a wave face or the make the surfer look smaller. Notice you don't see the bottom of the wave.

[–]Realsan 4 points5 points ago*

I'm also gonna call this a fake. This looks larger than the exaggerated tsunamis in movies. EDIT: Guess it's not a fake. Just a viewpoint that makes the wave look larger than normal.

There's a comment here from 1h 45m prior to your's linking to the pic on the photographer's website. Not fake, just an angle that makes it look bigger than it is.

His balls have the density of a small star. Looking at this picture made mine suck up into my body cavity.

[–]lolidiotslol 0 points1 point ago

Actually star density is SURPRISINGLY low. For example our sun is around 1400kg/m3 compared to water, which is 1000kg/m3. You might want revise that to say "the iron core of a super-blue-giant star" you NIGGERFAGGOT

That wave has haunted my nightmares for years. Every time I am under a lot of stress, I dream that this wave is headed straight for me, but I can't escape it because of the undertow that gathers when a big wave is forming. I want to run but I can't.

I hate that dream.

Tsunamis aren't that tall really. The mass of water is big enough that it doesn't allow for the formation of a big crest. They look more like water spilling out of a big container.
